Apparently it's the most depressing day today ( 22nd January 2007 ).
This can be due to the Weather, Money due in January pay ( If you are paid monthly ) and Christmas blues.
Do you feel it? |

Nope - although that might have something to do with the fact that I'm starting a week's holiday today!
(Doing nothing special, just lounging around at home and waiting for my sore throat to improve so I can get out walking this week....) _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I used to feel it when I was working and when we had huge Christmas bills (when the kids were little). Not too bad this January. Planning a life of self-employment at the moment, money's not tight (yet).
Weather up here has been odd recently but starting to get cold, but I look forward to the
I like seeing frost on the trees

You ARE joking
No of course not; I don't know where Surrey is
Warwickshire in is the South Midlands, well it's in the West Midlands, or even the East Midlands......
It's a very odd-shaped county because years ago some politicians decided to put Solihill and Coventry in the county of West Midlands and be a right arm (on the map) for Birmingham. Consequently there is a rather remote part of North Warwickshire which includes Atherstone and Nuneaton, but much of it is just south of Birmingham. The M40 cuts through from Henley-in-Arden down to the Leamington area.
To the East we have Rugby, in the middle we have Leamington, Warwick, Kenilworth and Stratford-upon-Avon, to the south we have parts of the Cotswolds area with Stow-in-the-Wold, Moreton-on-the-March, Bourton-on-the-Water. And to the west we have Alcester, Broadway and Evesham. Average house price is likely £180,000.
Coventry is still regarded affectionately as our 'city' and home of our rubbish football team, but the gem is Warwick and it's fantastic still 100% intact castle.
We don't have any mountains, no lakes, but lots of canals and pubs

thanks John
all those place names however mean nothing to me - it's enough for me to know it's near Birmingham (you see - it was only in October I discovered there was such a thing as the Midlands... I thought it was just north and south...
and, well, to me, Newcastle is south - I'm a scot for goodness sake

You used to - pre-1974? Some up in Scotland still address letters etc with the likes of Clackmannanshire, Lanarkshire, etc. My cousin still uses Ross and Cromarty in her address even though its now Highland (and she's about the same age as me - too young to remember the pre-1974 counties). _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I ditched the County thing when we were forced to become Humberside. Hull lost twice.
First it used to be "The City and County of Kingston upon Hull"
Then we lost the right to remain part of Yorkshire.
Fortunately, both of those were reversed, and Grimsby got saddled with N.E Licolnshire _________________ Geddon

Ruddles used to be brewed in Oakham, Rutlandshire. That county got swallowed up by Leics. Oh, and the brewery got swallowed up by Greene King in 2000. |

yes, there are some 'counties' if you want to call them that -more regions - but if you get asked where you're from you don't do the wierd english thing of naming a county, yuo state the town, so much easier that way!
the regions are now only for council use - eg the people who are responsible for picking up your bins and who you'd complain to if the street light stopped working etc _________________ I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering. |

Thank's John.
I had a vague memory of it being somewhere in the midlands, & based on an old, real country. |

I seem to recollect that it was re-instated at the last round of county boundary changes _________________ Geddon

Well, I was around, but only just, far too young to remember the old Scottish counties, e.g. Roxburghshire, Selkirkshire, etc. - but they were counties, and you're right about them being regions now - Highland, Central, etc. The change apparently took place in 1975.
As for saying where you're from south of the border, I say I'm from Newcastle - I never did like 'Tyne and Wear' much, although despite the old council being abolished, unfortunately they've never got around to putting Newcastle back into Northumberland where it belongs. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

...slightly off topic but don't have the time or energy to search fot the scottish thread -
Incidently - on the scottish theme... doing linguistics I have discovered that I 'realise fewer phonemes' than the rest of you - I don't know if you're aware of the IPA - Intenational Phonetic Alphabet (as in writing down the sounds as they sound - like in Pygmalion/My Fair Lady)
Is there anyone else out there who would have foot and boot rhyming? no, just me? aparently they should sound different?? _________________ I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering. |

To me they should, because I would pronounce foot as "fut" and boot with 'oo' in the middle, whereas as a Scot, you're more likely to pronounce them the same as you'll put more emphasis on the 'oo' every time. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

yes, everyone says fitba - never heard fit though
I love the new glaswegian rhyming slang - 'are ye corned beef' - are you deaf - since the way we'd say deaf, it would rhyme with beef _________________ I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering. |
