I like Stuart's presentation although I wouldn't go so far as to say he's fabulous.
I was particularly pleased to see him appear on Grumpy Old Men! I can relate much better to him now.
I'm convinced the presenters voice is the key to enjoying a show and I find Stuart's very acceptable as opposed to Evans which makes me want to switch the radio off!! ( as I do )

He strikes me as being down to earth, bringing no celebrity 'baggage' with his show. Although he's not my favourite presenter, he would definitely be in my 'top five'.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I think he's (stu, of course not evans) is fabbi - he's clever, witty, down to earth as you say and plays good tunes

If you speak nicely to John on the hall of fame thread, he may add him to the gallery - he is more deserving of being there than one of the incumbents.

He hasn't been heard much recently. Maybe he is off writing at the moment? I wish he would stay off that grumpy series as they really are panning the depths at this stage. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

He stood in for Mark Radcliffe the other week, and is currently back presenting The Cinema Show on BBC Four. |

Julia | Hi Julia,
I mean BBC Four on television - but I'm sure he turns up on the radio too! The Cinema Show is on every week at random times, but last week was going on about Last of the Summer Wine
Mark is referring to Wigan, which is where Stuart comes from - which means poor Stuart misses the Wigan FC matches because of his show. I believe Stuart himself now lives in Birmingham so he can work in London and watch the footie just as easily.
Nice avatar, btw |

It's getting to be a bit of a tradition on this board now, Julia - you're the ***th (rather lovely) lady to have graced our little corner of radio-land and they went through the same baptism of fire.
Personally, I'll never be the same again after seeing Alex Lester's Chinese "Slap My Top" T-shirt model, and I'm always careful to miss out the aisle in my local Tesco where there's a lass whirling around on the floor nibbling at the hard skin on her feet.... photographic evidence of the latter hasn't yet been posted here yet but I'm sure it's only a matter of time. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I'll take it as a complement then - I'm rather disturbed by the thought of someone nibbling at hard skin on her feet in the middle of tesco, or anywhere for that matter - once again, Julia the Slow is confussed - if she's lucky she'll understand it later on _________________ I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering. |

So...getting back to topic (sorry guy's, I've been off the boards a while and catching up).
While I wish Richard Allinson was back in the Saturday slot, Stuart is doing a great job. I preferred him to Johnny Walker on Drivetime.
But I do miss the hour version of Critical list, introduced me to some great music I'd never heard of. He's a welcoming presenter and ok by me! _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

welcome aboard fellow Stuart Maconie fan - I agree - he does a great job keeping the drivetime seat warm
He does encorporate the critical list a wee bit into his sat afternoon show

While I do enjoy Stuart's Saturday show (What a lamentable decision to chop ½ hour off it) I also miss all the unfamiliar tracks that got played on the original Critical List. The albums that get played on the 'Critical List' spot now all seem to be the 'big hit' ones. The only nod in the direction of the original for me seems to be the 'Unsung' spot. I do enjoy the 'Keeping the faith' spot though. |

I haven't heard his 6 music show for a long time. I don't think he called it 'The Freak Zone' then. I do remember the last track on the show then was an epic, the spot was called 'The Long Goodbye'. One track I remember him ending a show with was Yes' Yours Is No Disgrace.

Think I've said this before but it was thing's like the Critical list that R2 was great at - introducing us to new music and even old music that we'd never heard before. I got into Aimee Man from Stuart's Critical list.
Then you had the 'unsung' slot where again we were introduced to different music (well, different to that which I knew) _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Likewise - and I've recently bought Aimee Mann's "Batchelor No.2", splendid stuff.

Exactly - this sort of thing got me hooked on listening to R2 in the first place, and is the reason why I'm still here. Bob Harris, Stuart Maconie and Richard Allinson have probably been instrumental in broadening my musical tastes over the last ten years - with Ken Bruce and Terry Wogan even getting in on the act, KB being responsible for me getting Lisa Miskovsky's "Falling Water" CD after he plugged it as album of the week, and TW for my purchase of Tift Merritt's "Tambourine" album last year after he kept playing "Good Hearted Man". _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Yes, got that Aimee Mann Cd - great isn't it?
That's what I like about R2, doesn't just play chart stuff.

Does this mean we wont hear the Christmas carol backing music in February?

DFS have another sale advert on at the moment. And the previous sale only ended on January 31st. Still the Stuart sound-a-like is promising interest free credit so it must be good _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.....
