John W's avatar at the moment pictures Anona Winn, recalls her in Twenty Questions, and wonders if she was ever on Radio 2.
I cannot recall her so, or find anything on the web (though I'm far from expert there). I remember her in lots of Radio 4 panel games, such as Many A Slip, My Word, once in an early Just A Minute, and on The Petticoat Line, which was a semi-serious agony-aunt show with the likes of Eleanor Summerfield and Isobel Barnet and, for light relief, Renee Houston.
Any other offers? _________________ Ron |

Hi RockitRon,
I have memories of Anona Winn on those panel games. She was a very talented entertainer, quite a comedienne and ace impersonator. Her singing career goes back to the early 1930's, she made quite a few records including a 'Stars of Variety' with Billy Cotton where she impersonated others, and also a duet with Alan Breeze. In fact she did quiet a few vocal duets with male singers with dance bands like Henry Hall and Ambrose. The one that springs to mind, heard more than once on M Laycock's show and maybe Desmond's show, is 'Let's Put Out The Lights And Go To Sleep' with Sam Browne.
I'm just wondering if she was ever on the early Radio 2 comedy shows or with Jack Jackson or Billy Cotton. _________________ -

Hello John
I think her singing career must have been before my time, since I only remember the games, and they were the gentler shows, rather than the laugh-a-minute Light/Radio 2 ones. Billy Cotton in the 50s/60s had Kathie Kay as female vocalist, in addition to Alan Breeze, Rita Williams and The Bandits.
Ian may know, of course. _________________ Ron |

Does he mean me?
Alas, I'm stumped on this one.

Don't know her - I've looked her up on wikipedia - she seems to have been a bit more comic actress (the connection with Abbot & Costello and the I Love Lucy comparison) than singer.
Ian - sorry, yes, I did mean you - I think you're just a touch older and have remembered things a little further back than me on previous occasions. I think she's just that little bit too far back for all of us! _________________ Ron |

Flattery will get you everywhere!
And, for the record, I'm 58. Anyone else care to reveal their years?

Hi,
There is a clip of '20 questions' here but there's more than one woman on the clip. Anona may be the more vocal one. She was Australian-born but I think her accent was just typical posh-sounding for the times. (despite the link address, the clip is on the Whirligig TV site).

She was in a couple of British films in the 1930's and there is a very old clip of her on the Pathe Newsreel site singing a song in 1929, a la 1920's flapper style, but not typical of her later career

Interesting clips. Was that Gilbert Harding saying he enjoyed bicarbonate of soda?
I asked my mother, who's 78, about Anona, but she couldn't remember her as a singer either.
Ian, I shall be 55 in April, so, as I said, just a touch! _________________ Ron |

Ron,
Your mother was born in 1928, and Anona Winn made her popular records during 1928-1935, so that's no wonder _________________ -
