We now know that the Evening Prayer from Under Milk Wood was the last piece to be played on HBT but does anyone know what the first one was, on 15 November 1959?
It may have been the Allegro Diciso from Handel's Water Music, as this was used on a partial reconstruction of that first programme many years later but I can't be certain. Any offers?

Responding to Cherskiy, yes sorry Richard Baker was in The Royal Navy.
Ian,
I have Alan Keith's book of 100BT and he says in the prelude "I'll begin, as the programme begins, with the signature tune" and the first chapter is The Londonderry Air. And in it he says his favourite arrangement is Percy Grainger's.
So that suggests that that tune has always been the signatute tune, and would have been the first played on 100BT???
But I expect you mean what came next?
When was the reconstruction done, and why?

Yes. It was 'I'm In The Mood For Dancing' by The Nolans.
(Sorry. I'm in a pixyish mood today. Be interesting to know though) _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

Ha! Ha! Ha!
Yes, I did mean the first piece after the sig tune.
The reconstruction happened on one of the show's big anniversaries. Can't remember which one. I'm sticking by Handel unless anyone can suggest otherwise.

I thought it was Tina Charles who did 'I'm In The Mood For Dancing' ?
Ian,
In his book Alan Keith only briefly mentions Handel's Water Music, doesn't pick out any of the separate pieces but only mentions the shortened arrangement by Hamilton Harty which was more popular then than it is now.
I don't have a recording of Harty's arrangement, preferring the authentic performances, but I know the Allegro deciso was the final piece in Harty's arrangement, and is based on the Hornpipe in Handel's Suite No 2 of the Water Music.
I don't think anyone is going to dispute your conclusions from the reconstructed programme which presumably Keith was involved in anyway.

No John, you're thinking of 'Lord' Charles who did 'Take Your Hand From My Bum, It's making My Eyes Water' - Top 10, 1975. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |
