They are not, Mark.

I honestly believe that if you mentioned the words "Journalist" and "Journalism" to Fiona Phillips she would need to look them both up in a dictionary.
Someone might need to spell them out for her first, though..... _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

"Fiona graduated from the University of Birmingham with a BA (Hons) in English; she also undertook a PGC in journalism.
Phillips started her career in independent radio working as a reporter for local stations County Sound in Surrey, Hereward Radio and Radio Mercury in Sussex."
If you'd spent a minute of research you might have avoided the embarassment of that inaccurate and unpleasant message.

She's not exactly an exemplar of the profession. There are hundreds of courses around the country - both Undergraduate and PostGrad - that offer "Journalism" and "Media" studies but not all of them are good. Many of them are just putting bums on seats.
I partly earn my living from writing, and I work alongside lots of so-called journalists who are either staff/freelance writers, editors and sub-editors. I have over 450 magazine/newspaper credits to my name in addition to four books and I know from experience that a PostGrad in Journalism doesn't necessarily a good journalist make.
I have my copy edited by Subs who change "its" to "it's" when it really should be "its".
I've never seen nor heard anything from Fiona Philips that satisfies me that she's what I would call a good journalist - but I would say she's a reasonably successful media personality. |

Aaaaargh!
Justifiable homicide. And it's a practice creeping in because those doing it don't know WHICH is right, so if an apostrophe is added, that somehow suggests they know what they are doing! (After all, an apostrophe must be intellectual!) |

The big problem with this is that, once it's in print and in the public domain, it's assumed that I wrote it even though in fact it was the Sub who was being useless. One such Sub had a degree in English and really should have known better! And that's my point, really......... |

OK, well, since I'm not qualified in the area it is difficult for me to comment, except to say that when I read a newspaper, any newspaper, I find it full of inaccuracies, assumptions and errors in spelling and grammar which might lead me to agree with your assertion that a BA Hons in English and a postgraduate course in journalism might not be all they are cracked up to be.
Nevertheless Ms Philips has spent all of her working life in journalism, reporting and presentation, on radio and television, and has had to cope with the pressures not only of live broadcasting but also working with Eamonn Holmes, so she must have something about her.
I didn't hear her reviews of the papers last week, and I didn't really much care for her work on GMTV; I just felt that post was spiteful and clearly wrong and I could not let it pass. _________________ Ron |

Her "reviews" of the papers with Richard Madeley were so tabloid and shallow (full of personal comment and lacking in any journalistic analysis) that they were cringeworthy. Any journalist worth his/her salt would have done much better - witness the equivalent input we used to get on Parky's Sunday R2 show.
Talking of journalists, Parky himself is a fine example of a decent, time-served journalist who worked his way up from a local newspaper in Doncaster and who learned from "old school" hacks and editors. |

I'm allowed an opinion of the womans lack of perceived ability without being chastised by a pedantic bore, thank you.
Having seen her on TV and heard her on radio it is my sincere belief that she is a disgrace to her profession.
And FYI, just because someone has a list of exam passes it doesn't make them an expert in their field- just good at passing exams possibly. I've seen examples of it throughout my life in various jobs....give me the person with hands-on experience over the university graduate every time.
And lets face it, she got her big TV job 'cos hubby was the producer......
What does where she was born have to do with the price of fish??? _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

You obviously didn't read my reply to Colin's post.
And here you go again...

It's my recollection that Fiona was safely installed on the GMTV sofa long before Martin Frizell was promoted from reporter to editor. In fact he started out as her relief
At least I stopped short of insulting you. You've insulted both me and Fiona Philips.
And you appear to have suffered a sense of humour bypass as well. _________________ Ron |

Going back to Colin's definition of what a good journalist actually is I am entirely in agreement with the phrase as he defines it but the problem is that I have never yet met any journalist who meets these standards
I have met many such people in my lifetime and my experience is that most of them wouldn't recognise the truth even if it jumped up and punched them in the face
They are driven to get results by pressure from editors who in turn are under pressure from owners and in the process would sell their own mothers if they thought it would get them a good story
Whilst the problem is worse for tabloid journalists don't be so naive as to think the same does not happen with the so called quality newspapers
There the truth is distorted in a slightly more professional and believable way and that is the main difference _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

There is absolutely nothing wrong with my sense of humour
I was merely expressing my opinion about Ms Philips' "talents" or lack thereof. I am entitled to do so I believe. You referred to my comment as unpleasant, which I do find insulting.
You were not put on this earth to act as my moral guardian- I have no need of one, thank you Ron.
Perhaps if you are looking for employment in this field might I suggest you contact the Roman Catholic Church _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |
