Fiona Phillips is doing a newspaper review on the breakfast show this week.
If she wants to be a politician - she should stand for election. Just stick to reading things out. |

Can't stand her. The other morning she couldn't help but stick in a plug for Alzheimers when reading out some other piece of news.
As you say just read it out.

She does my nut in. When reporting on the child benefit cut I nearly punched my radio when she said "£44,000 isn't that much" - I expect it is for the majority of Radio 2 listeners! |

I heard the chat between Madeley and Fiona Phillips yesterday morning and I couldn't help thinking that neither of them hasn't got a bloody clue what they're talking about! Talk about waffle.... |

I think they are testing her out to see if she will fit in with Mr Evans. Just think what a fantastic combination that would be..... I also cannot stand her, she just sounds "thick".
I had a desire to reach for the "wet fish" for a good slap when you stated "£44k is not enough to live on and all those poor mums depend on that £1k a year, its not enough to live on in London" and that bizarre statement "all the mums on mums.net are up in arms", they probably need that £1k to pay for all the parking fines when they drive their 4x4's to their private schools. It's your choice to be a stay at home mum, not everybody has that luxury of choice, some familys have to work to bring in under that amount between them. |

Sorry to go off topic, but what happened to Selina Scott doing the news?

She was only standing in for Moira Stewart whilst Evans was presenting - I guess because Evans' personal celebrity newsreader is his property and others have to make do with staff announcers.
Quite why Evans has to have a special newsreader for his show and his show alone is anybody's guess, of course. |

Just like Steve Wright's stand-ins can't use Tim and Janey (possibly because they're so far up his backside they can't get to the studio...) |

Not having Pinky and Perky when Wright is away is a good thing though, I almost forget that SW's show exists _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

There is nowt wrong with the banter between Steve and Tim. I find the show amsusing and a good way to pass away those motorway miles, but admitedly Janey can be a pain.
It has to be realised that neither Steve or his cohorts take themselves seriously, the same could not be said about CE, he can only function with his sycophants in a place that the sun dont shine, in fact Johnny Saunders is so far up there he can see Bob Shennans feet! |

If thats the case, is it not a little like him using his own production team as per his R1 days?
It does seem a strange arrangement, Im also convinced he selects his stand ins. It'll all end in tears!
Come back Boggy....... |

Trouble is that the BBC will be paying his production company to pay them. It's all a bit barmy. |

I thought that a condition of him arriving back at the BBC was that all the production was in house at the BBC, so as not to repeat the mistakes made back in his R1 days.
Have the BBC gone back on that decision? If so I see big problems ahead, as the more power he yields, the greater his demands get - of which, we are beginning to see the results. |

Yes, maybe you're right about the production company. However, there's no doubt whatever that he carries an enormous amount of clout at R2 at the moment and can do virtually what he wants. There seems to be a "What Chris wants, Chris gets" thing going and the Controller obviously loves him to bits.
I can't for the life of me see how or why this situation exists but hey.... |

Oh what a surprise, Fiona Phillips got the obligatory 'My parents had Alzheimer's' story in! A pity Madeley didn't cue up Phil Collins's 'I've Forgotten Everything'!
Other tragedies are available as my mum's got heart problems. Do I get a job on Radio 2 as well? _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Absolutely, my mum died last year as a result of Alzheimer's, and any one would think Ms Phillips is the only one who who has suffered with it in her family.
No doubt she was in a position to offer her parent(s) the best care. Most of us don't bleat on about it, and just get on with life and take what best care the NHS can offer.
This woman really gets on my t**s! Why is she on R2? She must be good friends with CE. |

It's more a philosophical question, really. I always enjoy her philosophical discussions with Ricardo de Madeley. It's what makes my breakfast so much more palatable. |

Fiona Phillips was the dozy mare co-presenter on GMTV, who broke into a news item on the floods in Yorkshire to tell us that Paris Hilton had been freed from prison.
I have never forgiven her for that. Kangeo, I'm sorry about the Alzheimer's in your family, but I can't help feeling Phillips bangs on about her parents in the same way that Gloria Hunniford bangs on about her dead daughter (after my mum lost a son and I lost a brother).
You can just hear the printers gearing up for the 'heart-warming 'autobiography. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Although, to be fair, she probably had the director in her earpiece telling to ditch the current piece because they were going to cut to a live incoming feed, so I might not have been her fault. I'm only assuming, you understand, because I never ever watched GMTV. Too tabloid for me. |

Which is one of the reasons why a NuLabour party political broadcast went out on an almost daily basis on GMTV.
Not that I ever watched it, you understand, but these things were trailed mercilessly.
And when the smear campaign by Derek Draper/Damian McBride came to light (they exchanged emails conspiring to set up a blog releasing false claims against Tory MPs), we all discovered that Draper was married to Kate Garraway, another terrible GMTV presenter.
And then of course we have Richard Madeley (one-time presenter of This Morning), a GREAT friend of Tony Bliar, and apologist for the wars ...

So are there any presenters out there who are not pro-labour. Smacks of nepotism to me. No doubt another reason why Sarah Kennedy had to leave, |

Even if there were presenters who were not pro-Labour, it would be career suicide to admit it in the current BBC climate, in my view! |

I think I know the one you mean - that's the day when we don't switch on any BBC radio or TV station for the whole day. |

I completely agree with you Dalmatina for more than 10 years the whole media agenda has been to back the corrupt powers that used to control this country even though many knew that corruption was going on eg the lies told over the Iraq war
The problem now is that the present Government seems to be in hoc to the Murdoch empire which is not a good thing in my view but one thing I think will come out of it is that the BBC will now quite rightly be given a very hard time
Whilst I would have no wish to see the BBC being totally emasculated because we do need a balance against the advance of the Murdoch agenda the Corporation needs to be forced to change its agenda and go back to being a truly independent media voice rather than being a mouthpiece for New Labour which is what we have had to put up with for years and its still going on now
The fact is our country is just as corrupt as the likes of Thailand or Zimbabwe
The only difference is that our authorities are better at hiding it
Well that's my rant for the day and sorry to be boring but such matters really do annoy me
As for Fiona Phillips I've met her twice and don't understand how she ever got on TV in the first place |

That £44000 is not enough to live on quote annoyed me too, I manage to live on £13000 a year so it's hard to feel any sympathy for them. |

She started by doing the "AA Roadwatch" traffic reports on Independent Local Radio and she was useless even then! |

They are both Journalists. I don't know what people are looking for when they listen to Radio 2? Some fellow members on this forum never seem to be happy. I think maybe one day - one of you should take there place, and try to see if you could do a better job. |

I think everyone who pays for the services they receive (either directly like the BBC or via our Cornflake purchases) has a right to criticise those who present themselves as being professional on radio and TV. |

A good journalist is a person who has a good command of the language, a determination to uncover the true facts of a story, an ability to assimilate information intelligently and then to report it with clarity and objectivity.
A decent democracy depends upon good journalists. Unfortunately, Fiona Philips isn't one of them! |

Oh, Mark.
I really, REALLY, wish I could be so easily satisfied. I sometimes ask myself if I am unreasonably picky, excessively critical; and if perhaps I am reaching a stage in my life where grumpiness comes as standard, so perhaps I should ease up on the second-rate.
And then, while I mentally correct the grammar (only in EXTREME cases, you will understand), and the spelling (on their quite appalling blogs), I begin to feel justified in asking exactly what these exponents of the mediocre actually DO to justify their salaries and their media exposure. (And this same media exposure guarantees yet further appearances and guest spots, earning even MORE money and unjustified respect, from those easily-led and ill-equipped to make value judgements.)
So, you ask what I (and others like me) am looking for?
I can tell you what I am looking for - and others can speak for themselves.
I am looking not to be patronised by the ill-informed, the ill-educated, those who have somehow and incomprehensibly managed to find themselves in a position to preach to others as if every word dripping from their mouths is some sort of gospel. |
