Could there be anything more dire than Patrick Kielty on the Saturday morning show with that Mischa whatever her name is? Truly dreadful radio. The pair of them complimenting each other on what they were wearing, him making that ridiculous clicking noise (like you make to gee up horses!). They were both so up themselves I could scarcely believe what I was hearing.
The R2 controller should be listening to this rubbish. I've heard better hospital radio! _________________ Minx

Absolutely agreed....
Note to Patrick (and Zoe Ball for that matter):
We don't need or want to know "what the producer is doing through the glass". We can't see it, it's radio and unless we know what the producer or the inside of the studio look like (Helen May excepted!!) then we can't visualise!!
Roll on GN...... |

It was a name-dropping fest, wasn't it?
It was so bad that I remember it all these weeks later! And Prince threw his arms around Mica Paris' legs and begged her to sing ...
- for vicarious embarrassment! |

I must admit I can't bring meself to switch it on.
I haven't listened on a Saturday morning for years. Went off Wossy a long time ago, long before all the Brand business. My daughter who was about 10 then had a friend over to stay and I was giving them breakfast and he was on the kitchen radio going on about 'Dogging' and him and that sidekick of his were laughing like a couple of schoolboys. It was pathetic and it went on and on - talking about the cars bouncing around and all that. When I had a moan about it on the old messageboard saying why was it necessary to have all that on a Saturday morning radio shows when kids were listening, I was accused of being a prude and allsorts - trust me I'm anything but.
He started to get on my wick generally - on TV, I could only stomach the radio programme in small doses or if he had a guest on I wanted to hear. Then he opened up his show one morning with a cracking track and I thought 'who's this?', it was really good and something I hadn't heard before. So I waited for him to say who it was - nothing - he just started going on about the bras worn by the Swedish Women's Army (I kid you not). That went on for about five minutes - no mention of the record, then he played another track so I waited through that ... but as soon as it finished he went straight back to rambling on about the Swedish Women's Army bras. I turned off and never listened again.
Then a few weeks I go I remembered he'd gone and Graham Norton (who I found surprisingly good when he sat in for Evans) had taken over, so I went to switch on. Got about 30 seconds of Kielty and that was it - off it went again. |

The Saturday morning slot has been a problem on R2 for years now
They always seem to stick with the same basic format although the presenters change from time to time for better or for worse and usually the latter
I think it is time for a completely new format on Saturday morning with far less chat and a lot more music
There are numerous presenters who could put on a far better show
eg Dale Winton Chris Tarrant Lynn Parsons Tony Blackburn Johnnie Walker to name but a few
The Saturday morning slot is prime time radio and requires a show equal to this lofty status
What do you think? |

I'd like a Saturday morning show that puts really good (non-playlist) music before boring chat with the same-old, same-old celebrities. |

Couldn't agree more Soulsister.
Ross had brief flashes of broadcasting excellence a few years back when he did actually have something to say and could be engaging. However, these flashes were just that and in the last 4-5 years of his tenure he was nothing short of rude, arrogant, crass and offensive, and for the most part, seemed to be doing it on purpose for effect. The last 18 months were dire according to a few friends who still tuned in for the odd half-hour here and there.
I know radio 2 is a broad church and has to cater for all kinds of listener, all different types of music and I simply tune out and do something else if the shows on air aren't for me. However, for a good while now I have had to turn off after Drivetime on Friday and only rarely over the weekend will I turn to Radio 2 - usually for Johnnie Walker.
I find the weekend line-ups, especially Saturday, to be pretty poor, for my own tastes anyway. It's a real shame because I used to quite enjoy Saturday after Ross had finished his show. I loved Richard Allinson and Stuart Maconie and even Gambo, then Bob Harris later on. Even Dermot O'Leary a couple of years ago was palatable enough to have on in the background.
That's all gone. Richard lost his show, Stuart his, and even Dermot's show lost its independent/new music feel. Dermot himself sounded fed up with it last time I listened early this year. His show now has become a cross between what it was and a Saturday version of Steve Wright - it's not working. Bob Harris was pushed to an ungodly time also.
I'm sure plenty of folks love their weekend on Radio 2, just not me I'm afraid. To have Norton and Carr on, Dermot watered down and nothing of much substance anywhere else is a no go for me. How R2 believe Alan Carr should be fronting a Saturday night show is beyond me.
Too much celebrity-filled rubbish and bad, very bad, end of pier so called comedy-fronted nonsense on at the weekend, for me anyway.
Kielty is simply a TV stand-in and poor, also. |

I don't listen to R2 that much these days but most Saturdays I put it on in the car, I agree with SS the Ross show did get a little tardy after a few years but at least the music was still pretty good comparred to the weekday playlist.
Maybe someone like Radcliffe would like a three hour slot on a Saturday to play what he liked. I just don't think that is on the cards he seems to be getting sidelined these days. I did always like the music on that show when Lamarr stood in for Ross, I remember him playing I Had A Dream Joe by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds as his first couple of tracks fantastic. |

Trouble is that I don't think anybody - from the Controller down - at Radio 2 has the creative nous or the guts to do such a thing these days. With the political sword of Damocles hanging over the organisation everyone employed within it is clinging on by their fingernails and is more paranoid than ever before. There's definitely no room for creative thinking in such uncertain times.

Yes, the only time I intentionally tuned in was when Lamarr was depping for Wossy. I think the fact that Lamarr spends much of his summers driving around the USA checking out vinyl record shops is sufficient to confirm his ability to come up with some real gems. After all, that's the best way to find 'em!
Again, I don't think his level of musical insight or creative presentation style is called for at Radio 2 daytimes these days. Blandness is definitely the order of the day. |

I think your dead right Colin.
The BBC have had a bad year, the witch hunt for Ross egged on my the very right wing press, followed by their continued harrasement over wages. Now to find themselves under a Tory govenment which often called to end the BBC License fee forcing it to go commercial allowing their friends at News Int to take over the airwaves with our version of Fox News.
Imo not that it matters is that they shouldn't be afraid to pay the going rate for good talent, and with it being the BBC there should be a wide range of talent and i don't expect to like them all either and continue to do what they do best. Make great shows. So when the axe does fall there will be enough of us to stand up for it.
I guess it will be a very dull few years and no rocking the boat along with cuts. |

The biggest threat to the BBC is not the Tory government (OK - coalition, but we all know that turncoat Clegg is just a puppet) but Ruport Murdoch in the form of BSkyB and News International.
I find it fascinating and odd in equal measure how people seem quite content to allow the BBC to roll down a slope towards a Murdoch-controlled state - which is what will happen if he ever gains control of a privatised BBC. Even without it we're nearly there anyhow....

I just wish the BBC's senior management had the guts to stand up to politicians in the way that Hugh Carlton-Greene did in the 1960s - a period in which more innovative broadcasting came out of the BBC than ever before or since.
Stephen Fry was right when he criticised the BBC for hiding behind a wall of mediocrity. They'll pay the price, no doubt about it. Trouble is - so will we. |

I wrote to my MP a month or so ago as part of a campaign by 38 degrees
This is what came back
Quote: | Thank you for your email about the future of the BBC.
I am a strong believer in public service broadcasting and believe that the BBC is both a great national cultural asset and a great British cultural export. The government fully supports the BBC and wants it to remain the cornerstone of UK public service broadcasting. I know that my colleague Jeremy Hunt MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has described the BBC as a "huge national crown jewel" and is committed to sustaining the BBC's position as the nation's standard setting public service broadcaster.
However, I also strongly believe that the BBC can and should be doing more to ensure value for money for the taxpayer. To this end , the Government will give the National Audit Office full access to the BBC's accounts to ensure transparency and to achieve value for money.
As Jeremy Hunt has also made clear, the Government will be discussing the future of BBC funding including pay for top executives and highly paid stars with the corporation during the license fee settlement and BBC Charter renewal.
I also think that in the long term the BBC's governance structures need reforming. The Government is not convinced that, in the long term, the current BBC Trust represents the best model. I believe that it would be better to have an independent regulator of the BBC that ensures license fee payers' best interests are heard.
Thank you once again for writing
Yours
Shailesh Vara MP " |
Every single reply that came back from government MP's was exactly the same all party lines.
I remember Andrew Lansley MP saying that he would be happier if the BBC just did news and information, if that is his party's agenda then it's not looking good |

Couldn't agree more about Mark Lamarr. One Saturday morning he was depping for Ross and I was peed off because I was stuck working all weekend so not in the best of moods anyway. Then the show started and the music was amazing - every track a gem - including some fairly rare old soul and r & b that was right up my street. It was obvious a great deal of care had gone into the selections so I emailed in to congratulate them and to pass on my thanks to Mark or the producer or whoever it was who chose the music. They wrote back to say that Mark always selects his own playlist and the choices were all his own. That's got to be rarity in itself I should imagine. |

It just seems a shame that these Dj's that know their music are being side lined with either odd show timings ar slowly being eased out,
I was looking forward to the day that JP was going to move over to R2 sadly that won't happen.

I had a feeling he might be London based. I wasn't into music much in the 90s either so if it was country wide I probably missed that too!

You know I've no idea!
Being a child of the 60s I think I just got into other things and perhaps other types of music (I go through phases like that!!) in the 90s. I always think my knowledge is sparse when I listen to the likes of Pop Master for that decade but some must have penetrated the old grey matter as I get some of the answers correct!

Unless he's flattened out his Lunnen "accent" subtitles might be needed if he came onto Radio 2 _________________ Ron |

Radio 2 have had a problem with the Saturday morning slot for some time. Wossy became increasingly intolerable & his show totally inapropriate for a Saturday morning.
And this Patrick guy is even worse. I have switched off after a few minutes & I have tried to listen on three occasions.
I am not that keen on graham Norton but he will be an improvement. I think Suzi quatro would be ideal in that slot |

How about some of those that Radio 2 have unceremoneously dumped in recent years. What would Mark Goodier do given his own show as opposed to just deputising for an absent regular presenter as he only ever did previously? I liked what little I heard of Sybil Ruscoe when her show followed on from Bob Harris in the small hours of Sunday morning. Sadly this was in pre 'listen again' times, so that wasn't an option!! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Elpuss the problem with Mark Goodier is that he now has full time work on Smooth and it was ridiculous that the BBC ever allowed such a great presenter to slip through their hands
I really hope they don't make the same mistake with Lynn Parsons
I remember Sybil Ruscoe doing Round Table on Fridays on Radio 1 but have never heard her on Radio 2 but from what I remember I think she seemed fine
Didn't she start off as a news presenter on Radio 1 on Newsbeat
I think so |

I don't really care as I deserted Radio 2 on Saturdays after SOTS long ago. Anyway, the broadcasting duo that is Rick Wakeman and David "Interceptor" Jenson are on Planet Rock at exectly the same time as Kielty - and they make much more entertaining listening. The music this morning has been fab so far. |

Yes I too am glad that this is Kielty's last show. I turned off after a few minutes when he played ELO (don't Radio 2 ever stop playing ELO?). He then went on and on about baking cakes yet again. Or 'bayaking cayaks' as he says.
At least Wossy played some fine music. |

I don't mind hearing ELO so long as it's not 'Mr Blue Sky', which is certainly the over played track. How about this gem that you never hear played on the radio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIlO-X5kVc0&feature=related Or 'Four Little Diamonds' which I remember Ken Bruce playing when ELO's Light Years compilation first came out and was the R2 'album of the week': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcNX7TyEVys&feature=related I don't think I've heard it played on the radio since that day. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |
