Granted it wasn't just any stolen book.....still....
An antiques dealer has been jailed for eight years for handling a stolen copy of Shakespeare's first folio.
Raymond Scott, 53, from County Durham was cleared of stealing the treasure, but found guilty of handling stolen goods at a trial in June.
The 1623 work was taken from a display cabinet at Durham University in 1998.
Judge Richard Lowden called the folio "quintessentially English treasure" and said damage to it was "cultural vandalisation".

As opposed to 4 and a half years to one person and 3 and a half years to another for causing the death of a man by a so called 'Happy Slap' killing

It does seem rather harsh.
Did anyone see the TV documentary about it on BBC1 last week? Amazing what a lifestyle you can have on benefits!

Yes, the resemblance to Walter Mitty occurred to me too. Of course, whilst he's inside his debts can't be pursued by creditors but I guess that as soon as he gets out (in four years, perhaps?) he'll just petition for bankruptcy and set off on another scam. |
