At the risk of starting off on a bad foot, my main gripe with him (or the Controller to be more accurate) is the amount of airtime that he is given. 3 hours a day plus an extra 2 at the weekend.
Virgin are being quite canny by bringing Suggs to the afternoons from January between 2-4pm. He could take a lot of listeners away from Radio 2. |

Steve Wright is a pillock. I cannot believe that slimeball is still on Radio 2 preaching to us with his Americanisms and 80s Yuppie charisma. Sack, just sack. Move Chris Evans to the 2-5pm slot for goodness sake. Steve Wright belongs on one of those Classic Gold stations amongst the rest of the Smashy & Nicey rejects. |

He doesn't really seem to fit in on Radio 2 any more. Whereas Jim Moir made the station a refuge for old Radio 1 types, its now carving out its own distinctive identity as a station concerned with serious music and serious laughs. A giggling posse and pointless facts - sorry, factOIDS - do seem very last century. |

Exactly. I think Steve Wright is just hideously unfunny, uncool and uninterested in anyone else apart from himself. I cannot believe that so many people E-mail or write to him saying "Love the show!"
Have you heard Sunday Love Songs? It's enough to make me want to puke. The guy is so far up his own posterior. |

Don't listen regularly to SW but why do he need all those haners on.
I heard Richard Allinson sitting in for him about a month ago.
Just him,Sally and 2-3 guests.
What a professional week it was.
Non stop oldies on time and he played 3 oldies back to back.
If there is any justice in the LD regime i would like Richard 2-5. |

As Mikeraphone says, I too don't listen to SW regularly but catch him on occasions - usually when I forget he's actually on or I am a 'captive listener'.
IMHO, the hangers-on almost seem only to be there to pick up a paycheck (a nice job to have, though - it looks like they're being paid for doing very little).
The 'Me, Me, Me' attitude, 'Love the Show, Steve' plugs, so-called Golden Oldies 2.45-3.20 slot and hardly referring to the music he's paid to play - well, it's all been said already, both here and on the old boards. I firmly believe that half of the 'Love the Show, Steve' messages are sent tongue in cheek - surely people can't be taken in by this excuse for a show any more?
On the very few occasions I've listened to SWSLS he's played 10CC's "I'm Not In Love" every time.... presumably the Commodores' "Three Times A Lady" gets played to death too.
As for the 'Factoids' - well, don't get me started....

Nothing wrong with Steve Wright's show. Perhaps a change around of the show format.
2.00 - 2.30pm News, talk, chat - just like today.
2.30 - 3.00pm 1st guest (Monday the star signs)
3.00 - 4.00pm Non stop oldies Hour
4.10 - Website of the day
4.20 - 4.30 Big Quiz
4.30 - 5.00 2nd Guest.
I do think that Sunday Love Songs has run its course and should perhaps now be put into the Radio History books.

This gripe thread against Steve Wright has content that is just about as bad as will be allowed, so tread carefully.

SW is ok on his own. The afternoon show though is too "big". Intimate Radio is far more listener friendly. A radio show should be like having the preseneter drop in for coffee and a chat; From my viewpoint, SW's afternoon show is like being on business trip, eating alone in the evening and seeing a group of people having a great time at the oher side of the room, leaving me to think, I wish I was having that much fun...... |

The show is too dated and the features are worn out. Steve Wright hasn't changed his format whatsoever, which is why his show comes across somewhat boring and predictable. Replace him with Chris Evans and fresh new format. |

I really do think that Steve is incapable of change. That is sad, but if he cant change, he should be let go. All broadcasters have to change with the times. I dont want a copy of Evans Saturday show on weekday afternoons.
Lets face it, zoo radio is dead. Only a very select few can make it work now by taking it in new directions. Evans has moved on thankfully and is now doing more of a lifestyle show for a new generation. He ain't going to drop that, given that it has revived his otherwise dead career. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I listen to SW very rarely, But I think his problem is, he couldn't survive without a 'posse' - he needs a bit of back up.
If I'm right <no pun intended> didn't he have a televison show for a couple of seasons in the 80's, that went tits up because, by and large he had no on-screen personality?
I think it's the same for his radio show. With his side-kicks he's just about ok, but by himself...........? |

Well, I've "Listened Again" to Dale doing Monday for SW. 100% better - a proper Oldies Hour, no pointless jabbering or silly impersonations. As Rachel put it earlier in this thread, "intimate radio" works.
Having said that, I'm not a particularly big fan of Dale to start with and don't listen to POTP much but I could get used to him sitting in for SW permanently if he's this good with a weekday show.

It ran on Saturday evenings, IIRC - I do remember him having Gillian Anderson (of X-Files fame) on as a guest and him sitting behind a desk interviewing her - or at least going through the motions as he was more interested in checking that his fingernails were clean during the time she was on. Very rude....

I used to hate Steve Wright back in the old days when he had that "Mr Angry" slot on the show. I guess then he was considered to be pretty "avant garde" for the period. These days I don't mind him at all, I think he is pretty laid back, slightly self mocking, a bit devil may care. He's not out to prove anything, and he's as comfortable as an old slipper..... an old pro... and had better watch out because that's the way Johnny Walker was and look who replaced him. |

Good luck on the save Steve Wright campaign. I think you might have difficulty rounding up signatures for the petition. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Especially given the 15 minutes I heard this afternoon, singing along (badly) to the songs, pretending to give a 'documentary' over Jimi Hendrix and the rest. Give it a rest, Steve. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

These comments contrast with Lesley Douglas in Radio Times. While it's acknowledged that Wright introduced the Zoo format to the UK, she says things have moved on and no-one does Zoo anymore |

If it doesn't, it should!
I was in my doctor's waiting room this afternoon and to make matters worse, the receptionists had a radio in place of where the TV used to be, tuned to Steve Wright, with a little sign saying "please do not touch the radio".... enough to make you ill (if you weren't already!)....
Listening to SW for 20 minutes was enough to make me ill, if I wasn't already! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I think they do things in Doctors waiting rooms, eg out of date magazines, leaflets on nasty diseases to make you feel your aren't that bad, just add SW to the list .

I find SW very therapeutic, especially today when he was singing over the non - stop oldies; I just vent my spleen at him and it relieves all my pent up anger and any tendancy towards road rage.

SW would clear the waiting lists in short shrift, that's for sure.... and I'm on the road to recovery, thanks!

I'd have gladly shouted "will you just shut the f*ck up" at the radio but then I'd probably have had to perform CPR on the little old lady sitting next to me: she'd have no doubt dropped dead with fright! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”
