Half an hour in. Gordon brown doing much better than expected.
Putting across solid polocies and arguments while David cameron waffles.

Having got out of Rehab, David Cameron is actually doing better in the education round.
Brown too wedded to Labours' mania for over examenation & over- regulating |

The main mistake Brown has made so far was trying to cosy up too much to Nick |

Who seemed to imply that his MPs were a cut above those of the other parties.............. He came across as somewhat 'holier than thou' in a lot of his answers I'm afraid.

I agree. I thought he was a David Cameron impersonator at first.
I thought "What's he doing on stage with the real party leaders".
Apparently he leads some small fringe party & was somehow included in the debate#
An error made somewhere up on high, no doubt |

After his appearance last night, some polls have the Lib Dems virtually equal with the Conservatives and ahead of Labour. |

I thought Cleggy came across very well far better than Cameron who looked the novice he is, and more cuddly than Gordo.
If I had to choose the next PM out of those 3, I'd opt for Mr Clegg. _________________ MiS |

That is the problem with this stupid X Factor Type Reality Polotics Debate.
Gordon Brown was the only party leader who said anything of substance on the debate, but he came last in the Popularity Stakes.
Nick Clugg came up with a few soundbites & smiled alot, but said nothing of substance, came top of the poll.
The fact that Nick Clegg is a political fellow traveller of Osama Bin Laden is overlooked.
Nick Cleggs' close friend, Baronness Jennifer Tongue, expressed her support for suicide bombers right after Hamas had blown up a Pizzeria in jerusalem, killing & maiming many, including small children.
Nick Clegg was asked some years back to condemn suicide bombers, but he refused to do so.
But he smiles alot on TV & calls Lab & Con "The Old Parties" (much as a young adolf hitler did) so that's ok

I think you're right. It's rather chilling to think that many of those who voted for the Jedward Twins in the X-Factor are also in a position to be electing representives to the House of Commons on May 6th.
You do have to wonder......... |

I got to watch the second debate and the more I hear of them all, the more I hope Gordon Brown will win.. I think Clegg lives in Cuckoo land.
I think Mr. Brown benefits from being edgy and "on the attack".. this is what I'm looking for in today's situation, somebody who speaks their mind. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Yes, I agree with you.
Gordo came over very well in the second debate.
Cleggy would hand over Trident to the Iranians to use as they want & Cameron would cut services to the elderly,
As Gordo said, Cameron would be a danger to the economy, Clegg a danger to our security |

The thought of a Liberal Government brought about by three TV shows makes me shudder and I hope the British public won't resort to X Factor voting.
I do hope Labour get to stay in purely because I feel we need a further period of stability and, like it or not, things are improving slowly.
I don't agree with Gordon's plan to keep the elderly in their own homes for as long as possible (with the accompanying massive spending to make this possible) it just doesn't work in most cases - apart from on paper.
But the whole care for the elderly situation needs a shake up as it's failing badly. Our Social Services increase last year was 1%... that didn't even cover our increase in electricity bills... it's a time bomb. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I don't agree with you on that. Funding the care for the elderly in their own homes is right in every way.
It makes huge economic cost- funding care for people in their own homes is a fraction of the cost of putting them in a home.
The old people themselves are generally much happier in their own homes.
I look after my mum at home, i also work full time. My mum has carers comming in during the day. This works very well, & it is right that this care should be funded by the government.
Generally it costs about £360 PW to provide care in the home.
Care in residential costs about £700 PW, in a quality care home over a £1000 |

Sheltered Housing for elderly people is, for many people, the best option. It certainly has been a life-saver (literally) for my 80-year-old mother-in-law. |

Indeed, that is another option.
i really don't think the Tories have thought out a policy on this.
Some months ago when Gordon Brown first anounced the free home care policy, I heard a Tory rep- I can't recall his name- being questioned on the radio. The presenter tackled the Tory on their policy, saying "What if an old person wants to stay in their own home. Shouldn't we be helping them to do this?" (Or words to that effect)
The answer by the Tory shadow minister was so idiotic I recall it exactly to this day.
He replied "Of course, NO ONE wants to go into a home. But when it is decided a person needs to go into a home, that is the decision & they have no choice in the matter"
APALLING & RUBBISH. When my mum came out of hospital we had a meeting to look at the options. Going into a home was one.
I decided I'd like to look after her at home, and that was what my mum preffered.
So it was done and we got in carers to come in while i was at work.
Of course old people & their families have a CHOICE.
If the Tories want to take away that choice, they are totally clueless and bonkers.
AND with the country facing economic hard times, forcing old people into old age homes would cost a fortune.
But then we know that Cameroon & his Eton school chums are clueless |

Also, both the Lib Dems and Tories have plans to cut Taxes.
Of course this would be nice, but the country simply can not afford this at the present time. |

I think we can all afford to pay our taxes.
At a time when it is recognised that essential services will be cut because of the economic situation, it is irresponsible for parties to offer big tax cuts.
this is saying "we'll give you a tax cut & we'll take away essential services for the elderly".
This is an untenable & imoral possition.
Our current Tax & NI rates are lower than in much of europe.
Face it, we are not going short because of the current level of taxes |

Does that include all those 'hidden' taxes eg petrol and us paying off the £BNs to bail out the bankers |

Despite all the puff and platitudes, I still haven't heard what David Cameron's crowd would have done to avert the banking crisis. Or, in fact, what he proposes to do to put things right. It's OK to say "there'll have to be cuts", but I really don't think I've heard any really convincing proposals beyond such an oft-repeated statement.
Perhaps I haven't been paying attention!

We've been in the Care Home business for 15 years now and in that time we've seen cases of home care visits bordering on scandalous.
Of course, if the person has family who are prepared to help or have their parent(s) live in with them it changes the whole scenario but in many cases, an old person simply cannot or, doesn't want to survive at home with one or two 30 minute visits (including travel time)
A good Residential Care Home can be a life saver and in some cases, bring the family closer together. I've seen very frail ladies or gentlemen blossom after a few weeks of good food, regular medicine and above all, company and interaction.
We are one of the few Care Homes in Norfolk rated as "Excellent" ( and that's very hard to achieve now ) and our fees range from £300 to £400 per week for absolutely everything.. there are no extras. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Santa Fe, you obviously do a very good job & your care home is one of the good ones.
But I am sure you are aware that there are many awful ones around.
I know what you are saying about Home Care. There is alot of bad practice. We had two agencies supposed to give care to my mum & they were awful.
Finally, we found a really excelent agency which provides very good quality care for my mum.
And i am home evenings & weekends.
I have come across appalling home care & also very good home care.
Likewise, care homes run from really awful to excelent. My mum spent a couple of weeks in the Nightingale last year when we were having the bathroom done at home, & they were pretty good.
But people need to have that choice |

We always stress exactly that point, it must be their decision that residential care is right for them in their circumstances.
Looking at it from our point of view, the last thing we need is a resident who sits and constantly moans about being held captive or that they hate it here!
Our home like others, is a business after all and it has to appeal to new customers so a nice atmosphere is essential.
There's no clear cut answer to caring for the elderly but I do feel for the most part, the Government and it's Social Services departments are primarily interested in "ticking boxes and closing files" we seen it over and over again.
As I mentioned, home carers are good for the "intermediate" stage where a little help in personal care or preparing meals is required but I do feel it's far from ideal due to the pressures placed upon the carer to get to as many people as possible.
A good care home, apart from providing excellent food and drinks, personal care, mobility assistance, medicine procedures, outings etc, also observes the resident 24/7.. any downturn in health is noticed straight away and acted upon.
All this for just over £2 per hour? it's a bargain.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Well, I hope whoever takes over from you does as good a job, santa fe.
i work in the social care area. i manage a mental health project... well, untill June anyway!! I've tendered my resignation, because all the red tape drives me potty. The demands keep rising & resources shrinking.
Alot of good people are leaving the industry.
The government, and the EU, are part of the problem.
I'm gonna take some of the summer off, then i will get back into similar work in this industry. But really, the EU & all the red tape does not help |

I doubt that they will Clive55... unfortunately, quality private homes such as ours with 30 - 50 bed spaces are being snapped up by large groups and the standard of care and attention suffers.
But you're absolutely right about the red tape.. this has been one of the nails in the coffin for us too.
The powers that be worry more about form filling and procedures than resident's welfare.. it's just ridiculous and such a waste of public money funding these departments.
We've just had to re-register (again) to yet another variation of last year's overseeing body!
last year it was called CSCI ( Commission for Social Care Inspection ), this year it's CQC ( Care Quality Commission ) and another mountain of paperwork, procedures, training statements, box ticking etc etc..
Funny thing is, when they compile their reports on a home's standards they never ask the Doctors or District Nurses... who would possibly be the best judges! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07
