... for the passing of our family dog, Bess the Border Terrier, yesterday.
She was 15 years old, which is a good age for a small dog, and had been enjoying long walks with us right up until late this summer, but a tumour developed in her mouth, and the cancer quickly spread to other organs. She was still quite happy until after Christmas Day, when she became weak and would not eat or drink.
She wasn't directly our pet - she was brother-in-law's - but our's was like a second home to her, particularly when she, and our son, were younger. In having "a share" in her, the usual childhood hankering for a pet of his own was assuaged. She was a happy dog, affectionate, loyal and protective (woe betide any other dog which came near) and she will be missed.
As a pup...
...on the furniture (not ours!)...
...after snuffling in the snow...
...walkies summer 2008

Ah I'm so sorry Ron. It's a dreadful time and nothing anyone can say will help. You just have to remember the good times. _________________ Minx

Sorry to hear of the death of Bess. People who don't have pets don't always understand just how attached you get to them.

A terrible time indeed, you and your family have my sympathy for sure Ron. It seems like only yesterday when I lost my Newfs and still choke up when people ask after them.
I agree completely with Ian, pets form such an important part of our lives and give so much back which is certainly the case for me.
I take every chance to hug our "new" Newfie, they are so precious.
I can understand the "protective" comment.. there's been a few times when our 10 stone Newfs have quivered after a telling off from a Terrier!
Sounds like she had a long and fun filled life which is all we can give them.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I'm so sorry to hear about Bess, she was a beautiful dog. I know how it feels to lose a pet, it is one of the most awful feelings in the world, I don't think non pet owners will ever understand.
Thinking of you and your family at this time Ron. |

Sharing your life with an animal is a funny, enriching experience. We got our 2 Border Collies in South Africa when we were based there, flew them to Germany when we were transferred there, then after a couple of years flew them to England with the awful 6 month quarantine that was in place at that time, and then after a few years drove them with us to Spain where we lived for a time. After that they regularly commuted back and forwards with us through France for narrowboat cruising , and loved every minute of the journey, if not (in the case of the female collie) the boat itself.
Once they were gone, we felt almost obliged to exploit our new freedom, and to be honest we have made the most of it with our travels, but sometimes I feel like we are a couple of hedonists, doing our own thing, whereas once I felt we were a family doing something together.
I don't know what to think about getting another dog(s). You are so very exposed once you have them, yet to commit yourself to a life without the companionship of a canine friend seems a very hollow existence. _________________ Minx

It was definitely the right thing to do in our case Minx.. I used to think that when the time came and we were without our dogs, we'd be free to travel at the drop of a hat.
In reality, it was a terrible, empty existence and I'll admit to feeling a little more distant from my wife as the weeks went by.. not in a serious way but simply because such a strong common, stress relieving link had gone and slightly uncomfortable periods of silence were common ( well, we do work together )
I fully accept we're "dog people" and love it.. ( apart from the wet feet.. ) _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Ron, as an infrequent visitor to the site can I just say how sorry I am to hear that your beautiful BT has passed away. We too have a BT, he's 13 now and has a dicky ticker ( had it from when he was a pup, but it's never stopped him doing what he wants), so we never know when the worst might happen.
All pets end up as members of the family and it's heart wrenching when you have to make the " decision" , so I do feel for you. _________________ You can't keep a good Tog down |
