... (Suggestions for) a new presenter of Sunday Love Songs.
I tried listening to the last half hour or so yesterday, and tried to put aside my natural prejudice against the man, but there really is no more inappropriate presenter of Romantic emails, letters and phone calls and the world's best new and classic love songs than Steve Wright. His tone of voice, attitude, "sense of humour", and the way he reads out the plugs for shows later on (David Jacobs) or the bit of "relationship advice" - it all goes totally against the grain of the programme and makes me cringe.
I know people don't like the idea of "celebrities" being dropped in to radio shows, but it really needs an actor or someone who can give some feeling to it, rather than making everything sound as though he's announcing the arrival of the next train from Haywards Heath. Someone more Gerald Harper than Gerry Standing.
And while I'm having a bit of a moan, can't they do something about the turgid, repetitive, faux-romantic playlist? First record that Michael Ball played, Dinah Washington's As Long As I'm In Your Arms, was worth all the Whitney Houstons, James Blunts and Billy Joels put together. _________________ Ron |

Johnnie Walker would be my choice, he has a lovely voice. As I have said before I could listen to anything he said, he could be reading the ingredients on a packet or a recipe and I would hang on to his every word. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

Yeah, I was most disappointed when the new Sunday schedule didn't include Wright getting the push. What hold does he have over controllers? His show is terrible and doesn't even include many Love Songs (a recent show I heard included Over The Rainbow, Killing Me Softly and Carole King's It's Too Late). |

Alex Lester...aka Dr gLove would be my choice. I'm sure Alex did a "Love Songs" show way back in the early days on Radio 2- called the saddest love songs ever, or something like that. I was just a small child then.
Here he is a little before that time. I have one of these in my collection....

Blimey, Rach - he looks (there) uncannily like someone I used to work with 20 years ago (right pain in the a**e he was, so only looked like him )
If he could do an about-turn from the bachelor charm and blokish wit which listeners of the early hours love and appreciate he'd be a shoo-in. _________________ Ron |

Alex was in the civil service for a short while way back then - filing I think. Hey, I've just had a think bubble pop up in my head--hmmmmm, interesting. |

He also reminds me of Martin Hudson who just recently handed over the job of running the Classic Rock Society in Rotherham to Miles Bartaby! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

I heard Bill Nighy hosting the 'Month Of Matinees' show on 6 Music last Sunday and felt that he would be perfect for the Sunday Love Songs spot! He came across as really enjoying the music, and his dedications to friends sounded properly sincere.
He played Bob Dylan's 'Tight Connection To My Heart', which isn't well known outside of Dylanologists. Otherwise there was a lot of 70's soul stuff . _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Steve Wright is too full of himself for this slot and the various celebs that sit in are no good. My suggestion Dale Winton, perfect for it |

Oh no..no.. no..
Steve doesn't take it too seriously but Dale would make it far too sickly..

Dale might play 'This guy's in love with you' by Herb Alpert every week! |
