I really feel sorry for them. I guess the military will be bought in to help build temporary bridges?

Why are we not seeing convoys of Army Trucks and Royal Engineers with mobile bridges heading for Cumbria to sort the mess out and get everything moving again? I don't understand. They don't need to see Gordon Brown on a photo opportunity- he can't help, they need real help, they need people with wellies and gloves and shovels and brushes and heaters and dry stuff!! |

I think there are units of soldiers stationed in Cumbria so they are already there, but I expect they must wait till the water levels have fallen to 'normal' before putting up Bailey bridges ?? _________________ -

Apparently the A686 Hexham to Penrith road has had a temporary bridge at Langwathby for 41 years!
Re the floods in general, a friend who lives in Cockermouth emails me and says that the main street hardly has a shop, pub or restaurant that's been left unaffected.
I hope a national appeal for aid will be launched without delay.
Ian. |

I hope that Jennings Brewery is still intact
On a more serious note, I have a nasty feeling that resources are stretched further than they should be
Twenty-five soldiers, from 39 Regiment the Royal Artillery, have been sent to flood-hit areas to assist the emergency services.
Well, they can't be in two places at once, and we have much more important things to worry about than collapsed roads and bridges, flooded shops (and breweries), communities cut off and short of food and medical supplies in our own country
(Even if we have those temporary pontoon bridges the Royal Engineers were famous for, do we have the manpower to put them up?) _________________ Ron |

There's a disused railway bridge still intact at Workington, might be quickly converted to a road bridge if it's safe. _________________ -

I agree with Rach.. in my imaginary, perfect world, the Army should have been on site and at least one temporary bridge erected in hours by the army. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

There IS a temporary bridge
Langwathby Bridge built in 1968 after the last big flood, and still there!

This wouldn't have happened if Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart had been on the case _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

They're apparently to start work on it at midday. They've managed to find 200 soldiers to help out.
Meanwhile, some people have been playing the Cumbrian version of Russian Roulette

The unfortunate residents on the north side of Workington, cut off from the town by the flooding, can breathe a big sigh of relief.
Not only do they have a temporary footbridge, and a temporary railway station, but they now have a temporary Tesco's.
Off-site specialist and Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon delivered and installed the 13,300sq ft purpose-built interim supermarket on a brownfield site in an "unprecedented" 18 hours ready for shop fitting to begin.
The shop is now open and trading just 13 days after work started on site. _________________ Ron |

I'm not surprised at this news after watching a new McDonalds near us whipped up practically overnight! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I don't shop at Tesco's, or eat in a McDonalds, buy The Sun or The Daily Mail or watch the X Factor. Am I unusual or just choosy! |

I've never owned a car, (though I was a bus driver once), never been to Europe (though I've been coast to coast over America), never used a hole in the wall cashpoint, never been arrested (though I've been on lots of protest marches), and I still love my wife! I am definitely unusual! |
