Simon Mayo has just announced his (partial) departure from 5Live, and will be starting on Radio 2's Drivetime show in January.
However, the movie reviews will continue on Fridays on 5Live (as they have been doing when Mayo's been sitting in for Evans lately). |

Good news as far as I'm concerned as it means I won't have to turn the radio off when I get in the kitchen.. I don't mind Simon Mayo's style and find him easy to listen to.
If it's accepted that Simon isn't as popular as either JW or the insufferable one ... ( hurry back Colby!) I wonder what will happen to the Drivetime listening figures?
If they stay the roughly the same it'll put a bit of a damper on a few arguments! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

It will be interesting to see what sort of style Simon decides to take the Drivetime slot into. But a good choice which I think will please most people. _________________

I guess most of it will not change. When Chris took over from Johnnie most of it kept the same. Business News and Sport I guess will stay. I would expect the request show. |

"most of it will not change" - I agree, in the sense that there will still be music, news, business & sport. Chris made them all his own though - to fit in with the style of his show. I'm sure Simon will do the same.
Simon has mentioned when doing the all-request Friday that the policy of only accepting requests is:

Simon Mayo is all right. He did the Radio 1 Breakfast Show for five years until giving it up for family reasons in 1993, so he can handle a high profile show. I hope he does it his way, rather than trying to emulate his predecessor in the slot, because he just doesn't sound right at the shouting/leaping up and down stuff. He just needs to curb his schoolmasterly tendencies, and his producer needs to hide The Best Of Andy Stewart CD.
It's his 51st birthday on Monday.
I wonder if they'll ask (and I wonder if he will accept) Johnnie Walker to do holiday cover? _________________ Ron |

I would see Radcliffe or Maconie as natural standins (especially as one of 'em's doing it on 5Live) but we'll have to see if there's any more announcements.
I've realised that Mayo is the only broadcaster I've actually followed around - he used to read my messages on Radio 1, then 5Live and now I'll be tuning back to Radio 2 in the afternoon. |

Although I'd love to hear JW covering on Drivetime, I can't see it happening really.. I think JW made that slot very special ( I didn't really listen much to John Dunn ) and to cover wouldn't be right somehow..
but, good question.. who would fit the bill? has Suzi Q ever done it? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I remember when John Dunn did the Drivetime show and he was very good. Big shoes for Johnnie Walker to fill and in my opinion Johnnie managed to fill them. Johnnie had been the regular stand-in in John Dunn's absence. Those were the days of 'evolution, not revolution' and so it was no surprise when Johnnie replaced John. Something that sadly doesn't happen much nowadays. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I remember John Dunn had a simply lovely voice, and didn't he have a "Who am I" quiz on his show?? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

He did have the 'mystery voice' contest that was carried on by Johnnie Walker. He also had a question & answer spot that didn't continue long after Johnnie took over. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I remember well the mystery voice, you had to write in to take part when he started it of course!
He had some wonderful interviews that used to help me wind down on my commute out of Manchester!

I would doubt it. 5pm to 7pm on a Friday is the end of the working week for most, so all request Friday was done as a sort of "start of weekend" party. That wouldn't apply to the Breakfast Show on any day of the week.
It will be interesting to see what Simon Mayo does with the programme when he's freed from the current structure. His time on 5 Live has sharpened his technique and I think he'll get bored without a significant "intellectual" speech content, so I'm expecting him to bring back the interviews that JW and John Dunn used to do.

I certainly thought that when SM was standing in on Drivetime he sounded faintly embarrassed/impatient with the "requests" slot. In much the same way that Foxy sounds with her business slot. And maybe Johnny the sports guy will stay with Drivetime too, and begin to sound like a sports journalist instead of a bumbling butt of the CE "humour".
It might not be all bad news then. All I have to do is stay in bed a bit longer in the mornings (without the radio) and things will start looking up. Now all they need to do is to weave JW into a regular cover slot and my cup will runneth over. _________________ Minx

I doubt it. Confessions had run its course. It had done the pin holes in condoms many, many times by the time it ended. There is only a limited supply of things that people can do to each other before they start repeating.
Simon Mayo will be looking to do something with "legs".

I just hope his addiction to Twitter doesn't get the better of him. He wasn't quite so bad the last time he was on. The previous time it was just about his sole topic of conversation.

Well, at least there has been one good announcement in the last 10 days!
I'm looking forward to Mayo's show and really hopes he makes it his own. Like Helen said, that Twitter thing was dragged out too much last time, so I hope he doesn't take too many ideas from Evans' stint. I hope he brings back proper interviews, plays a more varied mix of music than Evans and his producers do, doesn't talk to kids about what they did today, and doesn't talk to women in cars for no apparent reason.
Simon Mayo has done some good stuff on 1 and 2, so I'm pretty sure we'll soon forget about the last 3 and a half years of Drivetime |

A hint on what is in store for Fridays... I noticed this on Mayo's Twitter today in response to someone
"yes it'll be a double shift on Fridays. Movies on 5L with Mark and then to 2 for all request Friday. Who could ask for more!" |

This is excellent news IMO.
At last the powers that be at R2 have done the sensible thing in bringing in a tried and tested presenter who is more in touch with the R2 core audience who, incidentally, are not kids as we are led to believe.
Hopefully this will bing a whole new format to Drivetime. No more cringeworthy fanfares for the kids, no more "entitling each show", no more scripted interviews, no more me, me, me in fact no more of anything that I have detested about Drivetime since CE took the seat.
Chris Evans is welcome to the breakfast show. I won't be listening as noone will every fill Sir Terry's boots IMO and I do feel that breakfast will never be the same. It beats me why R2 are always chasing listener figures. Does it really matter if only 2 million people are tuning in as long as they're happy. Funnily enough, this is what I predict will happen.
It must be a real shame for Terry to think that he's worked so hard over the years to bring such an audience to R2 in the mornings and it's just about to be wiped out as soon as the Ginger fool opens his gob |

This, from Gillian Reynolds in today's Telegraph
I shall miss Simon Mayo when he leaves Radio 5 Live for Radio 2 in the January re-shuffle. (He’s replacing Chris Evans when Evans replaces Wogan.) Listening to him last Friday afternoon, doing a carefully thought-out interview with a cystic fibrosis sufferer just after his regular film review cabaret turn with Mark Kermode, was a reminder of what a good broadcaster he is. He has clarity, range, a broad span of reference, a sense of humour, a refreshingly un-pushy presentation style.
So, as I said at the start, somewhere, Simon Mayo into Drivetime is really a step backwards. And it is on the face of it odd that someone who ran the Radio 1 breakfast show for five years should now happily accept the No 2 show on Radio 2 behind one of his successors. Of course, he's declined to make the move to Salford when Radio 5 decamps there next year and somewhere had to be found for him; he might consider himself lucky that Zoe Ball will be otherwise engaged at the crucial time, though I'm not sure that all of the present Drivetime listeners will agree. _________________ Ron |

Mayo is good - when he's being Mayo. He hasn't sounded comfortable (and, in my opinion, hasn't done a particularly good job) when standing in for Evans on Drivetime when he's been tied to Evans' format.
And if every presenter who had done a prestige show on national radio refused everything that failed to live up to their former prestige, then there would be a lot of former breakfast show presenters drawing unemployment benefit. If you read JW's autobiography then you'll know that he's followed his interests and his passions AND the need to earn a living.
I suspect Mayo got bored with presenting music on Radio 1, though it might have been gently pointed out to him that he was growing older. Five Live has given him a chance to do a wide range of speech radio, a very different challenge.
Now he's faced with uprooting his family, something he has no intention of doing - if I remember anything about him from his Radio 1 days, it's that his family mean a great deal to him. I suspect he would go back to local radio if it suited his family life to do so.
But he's been offered a show on Radio 2, a station with twice the weekly reach of Five Live and three times the listener hours. And a programme slot that's got a noble tradition of speech content, even if the present incumbent has done some dumbing down. AND he can still do his film slot on Five Live, at least for the time being.
I will be fascinated to see what he (and his producer) does with Drivetime, but I suspect it will be a little more intelligent than the present offering. And while that's a step into the past, I also think it's a step forward.

According to the Radio Times Simon is covering for 2 weeks. Jeremy Vine admitted on a number of occassions that he's not a DJ. It doesn't mean he can't add his input about Music. It would be a little boring if he didn't as he drives the desk himself. You can be interested in music and be a journalist at the same time. |

That's not true. They have to play a certain number of tracks in the hour. Some callers witter on so much it causes them to have to be cut off but he normally says sorry. I've twice been in the studio so know it happens.
Jeremy has been a DJ, on Metro Radio during his student years in the North East.

Thanks for that Helen, but any idea why they have to? Agreed some do witter but some dont and make very valid points and Vine appears not to be listening and cuts them off. Bannister, Hayes and Anderson dont do it in such an abrupt and rude way |

No idea why they have to but it's a music station primarily so if you want a discussion only programme I guess they would say go to R4.
I think Jeremy always likes to let the listener say as much as they can and it's not easy to stop someone in full flow. I've noticed him try to do it and they've not taken the hint! He does listen but don't forget when it comes to news time you have to back count the timings other wise you'd run into the the news which would then cause more problems!
It's not as easy as you think when you see it happening rather than just listening. Running orders can change if lines go down etc and that's just the start. The news people were having problems one time when I was there, with mics, and they sounded as if they were in a tunnel
The programme flies by when you are there though.
