It's called 'Soundscape of 1969' - bound to be excellent with Johnnie at the helm:

I notice they're billing it as Radio 2's annual soundscape. Have they ever done this before? |

I'm looking forward to this, it was the first year that I bought records with my own pocket money. It took me weeks to save up enough to buy one single though! _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

Mixed feelings about 1969 from my point of view but I'll record it, listen a couple of times and probably like it.
I quite enjoy these music/news of the day type features.. I've mentioned before that I have a complete set of similar progs broadcast in the 80s by the beeb - can't remember what the series was called but it went from 1955 to the 80s I think.
1969? I was working on a sea front Bingo and earning £14 per week.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I seem to remember something like that on Radio 1 way back when. Wasn't it called 'The Story Of Pop'? If not that, then something very similar. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I'll have to dig out the tapes but maybe it was "The Rock & Roll Years"? Each sunday was the next year in the sequence and between the music tracks were news headlines/stories with the sound of a teleprinter clanking away in the background... pretty good listening now I would think.... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

1969....
I was still into the Beatles but first heard Led Zep and prog rock that year, my O-levels year
I was also getting into Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart etc. bought a bunch of Decca and Classics For Pleasure LPs which I still have. Four Seasons, Brandenburgs, Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, Mendelssohn's Octet, Grieg's Piano Concerto (the soloist Peter Katin posts on R3 messageboard nowadays!).

Yes that's right. It was originally made in the mid-70s and I have a copy of one of those 60-minute programmes about Pirate Radio, narrated by Alan Freeman.
"Rock & Roll Years" was an ongoing BBC television series which featured 2 years in each edition. I have several of those on VHS although I must digitise them sometime! _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Er, sorry Colby, it isn't right
I dug out the tapes I mentioned and the radio series was called "25 Years of Rock"
I've listened to about a third of Saturday's programme and guess what? it's exactly the same programme - re-broadcast complete with clanking teleprinter!
So, Radio two will have at least another 24 "Soundscape" programmes to churn out again... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Just listened to the original programme on tape and for anybody interested, it was episode number 15 (1969), the theme music played weekly at the end of each show was " Oh Well" by Fleetwood Mac and it even sounded like Johhnie Walker giving the credits at the end as follows..
Programme researched by John Tavor & Pete Frame
Produced by Trevor Dan
Series devised by Stuart Grundy
and was a Radio One Production in association with Billboard Magazine..
Following the programme was a chap called Peter Claven(?) introducing his "Sounds of Jazz" (8pm until 10pm ) featuring Dick Charlesworth and the Phil Rhodes Band. .............. mmmm, nice!
unfortunately, none of the above names mean anything to me at all. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I've digitised mine and have it on CD somewhere - doesn't sound bad considering it was recorded off AM radio god-knows-when. The recording I have about the Pirates was re-broadcast just after the Radio Caroline ship, the Mi Amigo, ran aground in 1974 (I think) and they were a bit premature in reporting on "the end of an era" (Radio Caroline returned when the ship had been repaired).
It was re-packaged as an "Insight" programme (Newly-added intro V/O by Pete Drummond, I recall) and called "The Story of the Pirates" or something, narrated by Alan Freeman. I do remember it being mentioned at the end that it had previously been broadcast in a series called "The Story of Pop", but I could be wrong.
Now where is the file??? _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Interesting that this show has been aired but what I would like is for the Pirate Johnnie Walker shows to return. Fantastic radio. |

Either Google it or paste www.kyaradio.com/ into your browser and it'll bring it up.
( Click on "Listen Live"....... If it doesn't play, select "audio not working?" just below "listen Live" and select Media Player from the options it offers.)
I use it a lot and, according to their announcements, so do many more European listeners.
This and K92FM Country ( also available over the net ) are the most listened to radio stations in our house. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

There's so much good "radio" out there on the old interwebby thingey - more than you can eveer listen to during an average day.
I often wonder around cyberspace looking for interesting stations when I'm working at home in the afternoons and early evenings - anything but have to listen to the rubbish that R2 throws at us between 2.00pm and 7.00pm! _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |
