|
|
Following on from the success of the re-introduction of the excellent Sound of the 70's Show, I think Radio 2 should introduce a show devoted to the 80's.
There were a lot of good records made in the 80's which don't ever seem to see the light of the day on the Radio 2 play lists.
Radio 2 seems too obsessed with the 1960's and it's now time to drag the station forward a decade or two.
Richard Allinson would make an excellent host of such a show-preferably going out say on a Friday evening. |

Completely agree. Allinson did a great job with that 80's special a while back. |

Could it be that so much of the stuff that came to the fore in the 80s is crap when viewed in retrospect - compared with 60s material which isn't? _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

There were some good records made in the 80s. I've compiled 80s retrospectives for Hospital Radio and the problem I had was that the music sounded too similar for too much of the time (that "PWL" beat is on far too many records, for example). You can do a long running 60s series and maintain variety, and you can do the same for the 70s, too, but doing it for the 80s is more difficult.
I know - I've tried.

There's loads of 80s stuff on across all shows at the moment. |

It hasnt got to be a long running series has it? do a run of programmes focusing on one year at a time pick the best from each genre and put some news items to illustrate the times/events |

Yes, I don't think there's a dearth of 80s stuff to be seen and heard at the moment,, but it's a thought for the not-too-distant future.
I don't know the figures, but sales of pop records were probably at their peak in the 1980s, double? the volume in the 60s, and quality control seemed to be well down the list of qualifications and requirements when churning out a slice of vinyl. There must be loads of oddities and so-bad-they're-brill stuff, played once and never heard since, and I'll bet Phil Swern has a basement full of them. _________________ Ron |

I'd echo Rachel's comment .
We hear enough of them on the shows anyway as we do of the 70s. I've a theory on why the Sounds of The 70's (for me anyway) doesn't work as well as SOTS which I'll post later.

Might be fair to pilot an 80s show for, say, three months.
Presenter? Any thoughts?

I am against an 80s music show. Radio 2 plays more than enough 80s music throughout the day (and night).
Sounds of the Sixties and Sounds of the Seventies feature music that isn't usually heard on the playlists, hence why they are "specialist programmes".
An 80s show would not contribute anything special to Radio 2 like the above two shows do. In fact, I think Radio 2 should introduce Sounds of the Fifties - Paul Gambaccini would make a great host. |

I think Radio 2 should introduce 'Sounds of the 80s' at some point, maybe not this year... but one for in the future. _________________ Fred Hart

Fred, my point is that the Eighties feature heavily on Radio 2's main playlists (not that I have an issue with this). I do not think an 80s show will benefit Radio 2. |

Some interesting comments posted on this thread.
As a male born in 1960 I was very into my music throughout the 80's.
Richard Allinson's recent show about the 80's brought back some great memories and gave me a thirst for hearing more but I hasten to add NOT the regular stuff you hear on the dire daytime schedules at Radio 2-Messrs Bruce/ Bones please note.
I certainly think there is a "listener audience out there" who would appreciate a special show dedicated to the 80's-however but not anything like the SOT's show format (yawn) presented by Brian Matthews and aired on Saturday mornings.
Richard's recent show dedicated to the 80's was highly informative, interesting, alive and kicking and made you think lets "have some more of this" etc.
Hopefully sooner, rather than later, a show dedicated to the 80's (Richard Allinson seems like a perfect host for this) will appear in the weekly schedules. |

It's interesting to note that other stations have shows especially dedicated to the 80's.
I hope the Radio 2 management consider a show dedicated to the 80's sooner rather than later. |

Radio 2 is supposed to offer an alternative to what can be heard on most other stations, though. An 80s show would not contribute anything special to Radio 2's output as far as I am concerned. |

If other stations are dedicating shows to the 80s, surely that's a good reason for R2 not to follow suit? _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Radio 2 is already following suit by introducing programming that is only fit for commercial radio.
It's about time Sunday Love Songs was dropped; this garbage belongs on Heart, Smooth, Gold etc. The same with Dermot O'Leary.
Radio 2 appears to be reducing specialist programming (with the demise of Mark Lamarr's specialist programmes; Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour disappeared; jazz has been cut back, and British Dance Band music was axed last November).
I would not be surprised if Sunday Love Songs was moved to weeknights and renamed "Late Night Love"; and "Back to the Eighties" replaces Friday Night is Music Night etc. |

Radio 2 do play 80's music. The only problem is they don't spread there wing with the 80's tunes, and constantly playout the same ones over and over again. |

Clearly Blighty/Scott is bent on resuming the usual trolling on the usual presenters he doesn't listen to.

Two little points:
I agree that the SOTSixties style wouldn't be suitable for an 80s show, even though I totally disagree with the yawn inserted by Mark Mayhew.
And there used indeed to be a Sounds of the 50s, presented by the late Ronnie Hilton.
