Have just noticed the announcement that Clement Freud has died.

I must say I preferred him as a clever and dry wit rather than as a politician. One of the originals of Just A Minute, and heard and seen on many other classic radio and tv panel games of the 60s, 70s and 80s (not to mention the commercial for dog food - so I won't) _________________ Ron |

I've met the actual Olde English Sheepdog used in the commercial (I knew its owner). I liked that commercial! _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

I thought it was a Bassett Hound*. We're both wrong - it was a bloodhound

*My wife had a Bassett before we got married. She was a monster (the dog, not my wife!) and ever since we've used Bassett-hound instead of a certain stronger word ) _________________ Ron

He was a real one-off, an intelligent and interesting man who took great pleasure in the finer things of life. Irreplaceable. _________________ MiS |

Yes, it was indeed. My mistake. In the ads he was called "Henry" though not in real life! _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Awful way to find someone slumped dead at their desk. RIP |

I'm sorry to read about this too. Does anyone know how many of the original Just A Minute panelists are still with us? _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I guess it's better than finding him in a heap at the bottom of a staircase or under a bus. Perhaps he died a contented man. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

But it probably means he was taken suddenly and didn't feel anything, that has to be better than suffering a prolonged illness or something like that. It must have been terrible for whoever found him though
I loved him on Just a minute, his deadpan delivery was superb, great bloke a real character. |

I don't think any of them are sadly. |

The very first edition had Clement Freud, Derek Nimmo, Wilma Ewart and Beryl Reid. Wilma Ewart, an American, never appeared again and I can't find anything to say whether she is still with us.
The "classic" line up was Derek Nimmo, Kenneth Williams, Clement Freud and A N Other.
Chairman Nicholas Parsons is, I think, the sole survivor. _________________ Ron |

Ron, have to admit I don't remember Wilma Ewart, but Beryl Reid was a marvellous performer. I was lucky enough to see her in the West End, she was a real star. _________________ MiS |

Some of his bon mots were recalled in today's Telegraph.
My favourite was what he said in Australia. When asked if he preferred Sydney or Melbourne, he said that it was like comparing leprosy and syphilis.
But he was also a notoriously difficult man and apparently had a turnover of nine secretaries in eight years (I think I'm going to regret the way I've phrased that but never mind!).

I wonder if he liked Elvis' song 'Hound Dog?' Imagine him narrating it in that lugubrious voice. 'You...ain't...nothing....but...a... hound...dog.' |
