Post men and Women have been asked to pick up Rubber Bands because not only they are a litter hazard but animals like Cats and Dogs could come to harm if they eat them.
Has anyone heard of a case a Dog chocking on a Posties rubber band? |

Mark, I agree with your sentiments there, the risk is very low, and rubber bands are biodegradable so they don't last long outside.
Some smart arse just wants to be noticed bringing this up. A dog is more likely to cut his paw on a bit of broken glass or a ring-pull ring so let's ban glass bottles and ring pulls, in fact let's just ban hand-held beverage containers! |

Hmmmm – there is a bit of a principle here though. Rubber Bands are the waste product of “The Post Round” and yep they may be small and biodegradable but so what? How hard can it be to pop them into a little compartment in the post sack or trolley- then use them again and again? It seems such a waste. Imagine if we all just discarded small biodegradable calling cards on the streets. We’d be knee deep in it in no time, needing wellies to go shopping. |

The other important point here is that it's still classed as Litter - and it's against the law to drop litter (something we should remind smokers!). So if Royal Mail doesn't discourage Posties from dropping their elastic bands they're actually condoning the dropping of litter. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Thanks for the rant I'm not a smoker, but Smokers are encouraged to put stubs in special bins and not throw them out a car window. Also chewing gum is classed as litter. |

It IS hard. I was a student postman for several summers and Xmases. Quite often while trying to remove the rubber band it just flies off and you don't know whwere it's gone |

It wasn't a rant. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Very handy these rubber bands, I find! As the price of stamps has gone up, I think I am paying for the rubber bands anyway! |

Very handy - I haven't needed to buy any for years!
It is very wasteful, though, and while not quite in the chewing gum league they are litter when discarded. _________________ Ron |
