Simon Mayo is taking over the drivetime slot from monday march 23 for at least a week as Chris finally takes his long overdue paternity leave.I wonder if Simon is being lined up for his own show in next months schedule changes?
PS Tim Smith is sitting in for Alex Lester the same week |

Drivetime, with a bit of luck? I might start listening again if that were to be the case. |

If Mayo gets drivetime then we all know where Evans is going! (d'oh!)
Mayo's ok on drive, and I hope he's not made to copy too much of the tripe that Evans passes as features. I hope like when Allinson and Maconie cover, that Mayo can forgoe some of this and even play a track or two more! |

Evans will be on the One Show before very long. |

Make that two, even if it would mean missing the lovely Christine as a consequence. Hopefully it won't happen. Haven't Channel 5 got any openings for Evans? _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

They'll throw away a large part of their audience then if that happens - even if the delectable Christine Bleakley remains as co-host. I just don't get channel controllers' obsession with Evans, and I can't for the life of me understand what it is about him that listeners/viewers like. I think the guy's a complete and utter prat. |

Dont watch the One Show now & won't watch it in future either. Its nothing more than Pebble Mill At Seven instead of One mixed with Nationwide. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Come on, of course you were suggesting it - your reputation precedes you! Besides, everyone (in loose terms) seems to be getting a Sunday show recently. I've lost count how many rumours have floated around here over the last few months!
I won't be tuning in to Evans on the One Show, but still, I wouldn't underestimate him. If we're to believe all those who have said 'he's changed since his R1/Virgin days' (I've yet to discover that change when I've listened to drive) then he could throw a surprise... |

Evans on the One Show? Where's that come from? Both Chiles and Bleakley are signed up for a fair bit yet (and Chiles turned down a lucrative ITV offer to stay). |

Going by the current state of ITV Plc finances that might turn out to have been a wise decision.
Evans anchoring the One Show? Let's just hope it's a silly rumour befitting the silly person that he is. |

Yes, but most viewers will be of the view that they'd rather not be treated like idiots and shouted at. The current presenter/editorial balance of the show is fine, and the Chiles / Bleakley pairing is perfectly good for the show and should be left alone.
The last thing many people want is Evans' stupidity and banality - not to mention his annoyingly loud gob and penetrating "let's all have some fun!" voice confronting them at 7.00pm each evening. Whatever next - Timmy Mallet and Roland rat providing holiday cover? (Come back TV-am, all is forgiven). |

In which case, the sheep deserve everything they get if they consider Evans to be good enough for them. Thankfully, I'm not a sheep. |

Quote: | The former GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips will make her BBC Radio presenting debut by guest-hosting the Simon Mayo show on BBC Radio 5 Live.
Phillips, who left the ITV breakfast programme after nearly 16 years at the end of 2008, will present the three-hour live weekday afternoon show for a week from 30 March. |

I remember Fiona Philips doing AA Roadwatch bulletins for IRN when Paul McKenna was doing Breakfast on Chiltern Radio.
Whatever she does now has to dovetail with the care she's committed to providing for her Alzheimers-suffering father.
I've never, ever watched GMTV (too tabloid for my liking) but I have to say I admire her determination in the face of difficult circumstances. |

Let Fiona Phillips replace Simon Mayo on 5 Live. This means we can hear him on Radio 2 instead! |

I thought the reason she left GMTV was to spend more time with her family and father.
Or does the preparation and presentation of a three-hour radio show not take as long as for 90 minutes breakfast television
Her chat and interviewing skills were certainly wasted on her Sunday afternoon Smooth Radio show, which I hear snatches of when we're at M-i-L's. On a bland, ordinary radio station she was bland and ordinary. _________________ Ron |

It's certainly easier to produce and present.

The use of the word "bland" is very apposite. BlandFM is what it should be called. Truly awful radio. |

I don't know if he's trying to hard? Thinking about different ideas for the show? I don't know if Richard Allinson is better in that slot and Simon Mayo for Ken?

It's good that I can leave me radio on after 5.00pm? He's pulling a funny face don't you think? It's it too much to hope that the insufferable Evans might not bother returning? |

I do too. I did like his Radio One breakfast show back in the 90s before some idiot and the idea of wasting our hard-earned on Evans. Perhaps Breakfast on R2 is where Simon's destined? Not a bad idea (anything but the insufferable Evans, after all!). |

Yes, there's something ironic about Mayo standing in for Evans when they have such a history. I love the story that Mayo's team secretly bugged Evans studio so they could find out what Evans was up to! |

All they had to do was listen to what was on-air at any moment; Evans was being characteristically childish and banal as usual! |

Did anyone hear the Mayo, Simon Mayo on drivetime jingle which is similar to the one he used on Radio One breakfast show, but resung? He did say after he liked the other one meaning the breakfast one. I do wonder if he could be Wogans replacement? He would be good at 7.30am in the mornings? |

Simon Mayo would be a good replacement for Wogan(IMHO) there doesnt seem to be the love or hate reaction that Chris Evans gets,as for drivetime Richard Allinson is my own first choice he did it long enough when JW went AWOL and its a good slot for his style-i prefer being talked to on my way home than the 'lets put on a show chaps' of Chris Evans |

He is the natural and logical candidate to succeed TW, assuming he wants to go back to having to get up at four in the morning. He's the safe choice.
I'll say no more. _________________ Ron |

Hey, I've just come late to this conversation - mental note to self, try to check in more often! - Peter Allan on R5Live has just mentioned that Simon was doing Drivetime so the channel was turned straight over! Yippee - music in the early evening, I'm so spoiled.

Its all very safe and dependable. Comfort radio that doesn't step outside the boundaries. Since the world is full of kidults, then I'm sure he would do very well for Radio 2 at breakfast.
At least he doesnt have Allinson's weird way of saying the wrong thing when speaking to other human beings. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

We could see the return of Rod McKenzie, Sybil Ruscoe, Jakki Brambles and Dianne Oxberry? .. Also confessions? . Simon lives in Walberswick in Suffolk which is about two hours from London by car. |
