What's the weather like round your way?
About five inches of snow here, nearby school closed, no buses or trains.
I'm staying in!

Sorry, I didn't know a thread had started on Coffee Bar.
I'll look to copying the above posting and continue the discussion there.

It's really embarrassing how rubbish we are at coping, or not coping in this case with bad weather. I drove into work this morning, yep it was slippery in parts but is was drivable on with care.
However as they have predicted worse weather for later I asked for a half day holiday. I remember the A14/M11 coming to a complete standstill a couple of years ago and stranding people all night on the motorway. Cambridge always snarls up at the slightest hint of bad weather, just can't be doing with it so I'm sat here with a nice glass of red instead. |

I wish the gritters would snowplough away the third lane on motorways. |

Lets spend what money the country has left on thousands of snow ploughs. With any luck they will be delivered in time for the summer heatwave & drought. By then we wont be able to afford to buy water! _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

My brother worked for the Council back in the 70s and I would often ride with him on gritting runs.
The Council trucks had "bolt on" snow plows which worked pretty well as I remember.. don't they use these now?
or is it too dangerous.... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Ploughs were added to the gritters on Monday in the South. Unfortunately as I said 'they never cleared the outside lane of the motorways. Is there a reason for that? |

I can't believe what I heard from Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon saying 'they won't spend millions on new snow ploughs as we have this type of weather every 18 years. How on earth can he predict if we won't have this snowy weather in 2010 and onwards. He's talking out of his arse and the government yet again don't want to put their hands in there pockets.
The highways agency also told local authorities back in the autumn to stock up on grit. This is not good enough. |

It wouldn't be any different under the 'hoodie hugger'. I still remember the heavy snows of 1986/7 & 1991 (wrong kind of snow) That shower were in power then and things were certainly no better! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

While my initial reaction might have been (shock, horror) to agree with the sentiment (spending millions on equipment that is likely to be used one or two days a year, except for the odd bad winter, might seem wasteful) might this not be a chance for government to stimulate a section of British industry that is in sore need of business at the moment?
Er, do we have any manufacturers of snow-clearing equipment? _________________ Ron |

I completely agree with Hoon - this Winter is the exception, we won't get another one like this for years, I would be willing to bet!

Yeah MiS Tory weather IS so much better -
I've written a little poem, right off the bat, just for you MiS- ( and I don't write poems for just anybody- so be gentle with it)
The future 's bright- the future 's blue!
Hot sunny skies for me and for you.
Tax! What Tax? The Tory faithful sing
Not the kind of weather the Tories bring.
Take all your troubles then give them to us
We won't waste your money on a bendy bus
High speed rail is the way to go
Not another runway at poor old Heathrow.
Gordon 's sold our country and left us to rot
he's sent bills by the billion to every baby's cot
It's snowed for three days and they've run out of grit
Don't vote Labour cos they don't give a **it.
Is that too party political? |

Rough winters:
1947: Labour
1963: Tory
1979: Labour
1991: Tory.

Don't forget the winters of 1981/82 & 1986/87. Both had significant spells of snow, more than one in the case of winter 1981/2. Thatcher was in power for both of those winters, but of course the weather takes no notice of who is in 10 Downing St, it just does whatever it wants to do!
What about the hottest summers. I'll start with the ones I remember:
1975 - After an unusually cold spring with snow as late as May/June, the summer ended up being a scorcher. Then of course came 1976. Labour was in power for both of those.
1990 - After a very stormy start to the year, there was a summer to match that of 1976. There was a Tory government in power.
2003 - The year that 100°F was officially recorded for the first time in the UK. Labour was in No10. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

The summer of 1959 was also a scorcher. The Tories were in power then and their then leader, Harold MacMillan, played on it up to a point when he campaigned for and won the General Election in October that year.

You're right, Ian, it was a good summer. It was the last time our family had their summer fortnight on the east coast - for some unknown reason it was always Walton-on-the-Naze. It was usually perishing cold and wet, and the fortnight we had there in 1959 was actually no exception, finally forcing dad to arrange to go somewhere else (don't laugh - Bognor! - and it worked, it was much warmer) the following year.
Meanwhile, last night was very cold, down to -6C, but it's a glorious day, the sun is warm(ish), melting the snow where it strikes, and we've been for a good walk to work up an appetite for lunch. _________________ Ron |

Not quite as glorious here, Ron. We've had snow showers blowing in periodically from the East Coast. But there has been some sunshine between the showers.

I have been to a meeting (for work) near Whitby today and we have got a huge amount of snow up here now. It was falling in bigger than 'half crown' sized flakes and has been for hours. Don't think it was forecast for here, thought it was supposed to in the Grampians - well done! I notice its gone off the news now that it isn't affecting London and the South East! _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

Well it is snowing here (cambridgeshire) so it is still effecting parts of the South. You should know by now that London is the centre of the universe and is the only place that matters to news people |
