According to Media Guardian, acting controller Lewis Carnie and Matthew Bannister are said to be the front-runners.
Good news for me. Carnie did what Douglas never could - i.e get Baker.
Bannister's appreciation of Baker's work is legendary - signing him to both GLR in London and Radio 1.
I guess whoever of the two gets it, Baker will be back for more fill-ins at the very least.
(Cue predictable, tired anti Bannister 'ruined Radio 1' posts... Zzzzzzzzz)
Fact remains what Bannister did at Radio 1 was at least five years over-due so couldn't be done as slowly as Moir's evolution of R2. What should have happened was R2 evolving at the same time and taking DLT, a few other good ones and their huge audiences who were, by then, too old for R1.
Didn't happen of course and R2 resolutely stayed stuck in the mire with the likes of The Jamesons and Judith Chalmers! Hardly Bannister's fault.
I think Bannister would be good for business. Carnie too. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

If they'd wanted a dull old copy of old R1 then maybe.
You maybe lucky this time and get an old R1 in place of R2, that seems to be the way its going fast with all the dumbing down |

Cue Matthew Bannister who did yes sack a lot of Radio 1 staff, but I don't think he would do that again as times have moved on. He would be good for the station and knows what goal it wants to achieve. |

Bannister has also presented shows on the station so is perhaps now all the more in tune with the network's direction and audience.
And in response to Nod, no I don't think moving people like DLT or Bates would have 'dumbed down' Radio 2 or provided a copy of old Radio 1 - in the same way using other ex-R1 people like Johnnie Walker or Bob Harris hasn't. You'd rather have more of Lesley's favourite Big Brother presenters et-al on board then would you? - with zero radio experience. The reason Walker, DLT and for that matter Baker were on Radio 1 in the first place was because they were proven to be any good at radio!
A lack of foresight just ensured that when Bates and DLT left Radio 1 instead of being snapped up by Radio 2, they instead took their talents, experience, and vast audiences with them to commercial radio! _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

According to Radio Times Matthew Bannister is sitting in for Jeremy Vine on Monday and for the rest of the week.
I can't see him still doing that if it has just been announced that he is to be the new controller. What does anyone else think?
Is he going to announce it himself right after the midday news?

I can't see it happening myself, I think it will be someone else who will get the controllers job or they'll get another standin for the JV show.
I personally don't like him doing the JV show.

Not sure it'd matter in this D and A to be honest Hels. It'd get mentioned on the news - perhaps not till after 2pm when Bannister's finished. If it was mentioned on his watch a contributor might congratulate him - and they'd move on. I'm sure Ken Bruce would have some sport with it in the handovers and in fact it might provide the station with some useful publicity for its new boss. 'Hey, here is is! Live and on the air! We've moved on everybody! Russell who? Your new boss is also quite a competent R2 broadcaster too!'
And in response to an earlier postee I think yes, Bates/DLT and Harris/Walker are catering to different audiences - but big audiences nevertheless. And whilst you might not like an 'old Radio 1' version of Radio 2 the fact is the likes of the aforementioned - including Danny Baker - were considered worthy enough to be on R1 so why not R2? And if it's a choice between them and George Lamb and all the other teenybopper telly flavour-of-the-minutes with next to no radio experience, let alone knowledge of how to connect with this very different audience, then I know what sort of a Radio 2 future I'd rather have, given the choice. Brand and George Lamb have rather proved parachuting this kind of TV name into a radio studio can end in complaints, tears and P45s.
But back to Bannister. If he does get the gig it will be a bit of kick in the goolies for Lewis Carnie - the current acting controller and front-runner who probably hired Bannister to dep for Vine! _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

I agree they would be better than Lamb etc, and O'Leary etc in my view, but that doesn't make them good. I want a R2 which is above the regular dross that is /was R1 and its teenager market and entertaining the masses with Pop music, I want presenters who know someone including music, don't rely on reading texts and juvenile comedy.
We are never going to agree but R2 is descending into just what I don't want and Baker, Ball etc are just part of that. |

At least with Carnie and Bannister they have experience of what a Radio 2 audience is like. I would worry about a GMG person coming in and giving us wall-to-wall bland chart hits.
(Actually, I've noticed an ever-so-slight expansion of the 'oldies' playlist lately - I wonder if this is down to Carnie?) |

Understood, though I would say pairing Baker with Ball was a mistake.
Ball's mainstream girly brashness wouldn't have done Baker any favours in endearing him to a R2 audience unfamiliar with his work.
However, I think the more discerning could see through that and realised Baker alone had something that spoke to them. A maturity, a clever, original and quick mind, a love of old school showbiz etc. If he does return they either need to let him fly solo, or use someone more suitably proven as a sounding board. i.e. David Kuo from the BBC London shows. A terrific foil. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

I don't think you'd get the new controller presenting the show for 2 weeks as he is billed to do in Radio Times online. Strangely JV didn't say someone would be sitting in on Monday at the end of Friday's show, so maybe they have it wrong.
I did hear him say he was off for the day that James Taylor will be performing live on Ken's show during their 'chat' the other week. Well that is Monday week 2 Feb so maybe Matthew Bannister isn't on tomorrow after all.

Well... I haven't actually listened to Steve all week. I've had enough! (again)
I was just meaning the collection of old songs that seem to come round and round has expanded slightly - although we're strangely getting Al Stewart's 2 songs every day |

Good to hear Gambo play John Stewarts's hit song 'Gold' as the first track on his show this week. Sadly John died a year ago this month. I've been playing a couple of my favourite songs today on my accordion, that were written by John, namely 'Daydream Believer' and 'California Bloodlines.' RIP Lonesome Picker! |

I do hope the new controller is a Richard Allinson fan.
From what I have heard of Radio 2 lately the playlist seems to be a bit more varied-lets hope the new controller recognises that there are an awful lof of songs/records that need to be rediscovered and played on the various shows. |

As requested by Lady B !!!
If 'Blood on the carpet' Bannister is made controller, it will mean the demise of radio2 as we know it.
Having tried to turn radio 1 into radio 0.5, and brought in such lamentables as Baker and Evans, neither of whom were good enough to last any length of time, If Bannister gets his mitts on Radio 2 it will end up as Radio 1.25 and we will lose the likes of Wogan, Des Carrington and the good specialist stuff in favour of the cretinous 'Flavour of the month'. _________________ Geddon

In other words, a continuation of Douglas' bad work, and where there was Radio 2 to turn to when Bannister did his hatchet job on Radio 1 all those years ago, there is no natural successor radio station to turn to this time. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

So Matthew Bannister arrives on air after the song "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You" - coincidence?
I don't think you can compare Bannister now to what he did at Radio 1. Back then he was hired specifically to turn around an ailing station, which he did by quite rightly sacking half the DJs. When the star DJ on a station supposedly appealing to Under-30s wins "Pipe Smoker Of the Year" it's in trouble.
But Bannister would have none of that at Radio 2. His job would be to keep it successful, not give it a massive overhaul or appeal to younger listeners. He's older and wiser now, and has even made up with Steve Wright. Sadly |

I wonder if there's an announcement pending or if they will postpone it because of the Gaza appeal situation?

Ho-hum. (Drums fingers) 10pm. The good old reliable Grauniad then eh?!
Unless they postponed it (again!!) coz of the latest Ross debacle?
"As the new controller, what do you plan to do about Jonathan Ross?" ...
Come on! Announce it and let 'em grasp the nettle! In at the deep end and all that!
Meantime, replace Ross with Baker till this latest scandal is resolved (if it ever is!!) _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |
