Curved Air were apparently the first UK band to release a picture disc, in 1970.
However, picture discs have been around (apparently) since the late 1930s. Vogue Records released 78s in the late 1940s with illustrations under the clear vinyl.
Adolf Hitler (okay, so he's not a group!) also released a 7" picture disc of one of his speeches back in 1939. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Interesting.
According to Richad Allinson it was not Curved Air-4 years too early.
I will take it up with RA directly. |

There were picture discs as far back as the 1930s. Children's records like Popeye etc. Even Adolf Hitler issued a picture disc!
The really collectable ones today are a jazz set of about 70 issued in US by Vogue Records in the late 1940s.
As for British records I recall seeing one from the late 1940s years ago, I think it was singer Sam Browne but not sure, can't remembr the name of label even.

According to Richard Allinson the answer is the Cars with their record "My Best Friends Girlfriend". |

Don't believe everything Allinson says. He just repeats trivia that he's heard which may not be correct in the first place |

A-ha! That one.
For reference, the new edition of Record Collector's Rare Record Price Guide lists this at £15 in Mint condition (= about £12 in Excellent, £8 in v good) _________________ Ron |

As I mentioned above there was a popular series of picture discs on the Vogue label back in 1947 by bands/groups (rather than by, before then, commercials or fascist dictators).
Here's two sides of one, by the singing group 'The King's Jesters'.
Tell Richard Allinson about that one! |
