Another treat of a show tonight, even if he did get left with rather a lot of time to fill up at the end.
Where else would you hear the Glasgow Orpheus Choir and the Stranglers in the same programme?
Nat King Cole's Stardust is one of my real tingle records.

When I was a kid being forced to have my Sunday-evening bath in readiness for school the next day, it's the song my dad used to be whistling as he tinkered in the garden outside. One of my all-time favourite songs from the man with a silky-smooth voice. Perfect! |

Yes, I enjoy Desmond's show too and I agree, It was great to hear The Stranglers' 'Golden Brown'. I do wonder, If Des ever does a fruit themed show, will he play 'Peaches'?! Shame he didn't fit in Pink Floyd's 'Time' with all those alarm clocks going off at once at the beginning. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack.

I think Desmond Carrington should do a theme on juveniles. He wouldn't need to play any music - just have Chris Evans, Steve Wright, Russell Brand, Dermot O'Leary and Jonathan Ross on as guests. |

Regarding my earlier posting, I was in the local library yesterday and browsed through Natalie Cole's autobiography.
Her account of the final illness and all-too-early death of her father is a really moving read.
I have a CD collection of his hits but, alas, Stardust isn't on it.

You just prompted me to check my iTunes collection, and interestingly "Stardust" isn't included in "20 Golden Greats" so we must be talking about the same collection. I never noticed that it wasn't on there. I think I'll download it. |

Yes, that's the one. One of these days I'll get time to get into downloading.

Possibly one of the finest recordings ever made. As Terry says, Gordon Jenkins never touches the sides with his arrangement. _________________ MiS |

I haven't listened to Desmond Carrington in ages. Is he still going strong?
I've got out of the habit lately of listening to Radio 2 much full stop, to be honest. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I can understand your second statement. Our Lesley has caused me to listen to much less R2 since she became controller. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Saturdays, when once I would have had R2 on all day on Saturday
Yes Desmond is still going strong on Tuesday evenings and long may he do so. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

An intersting admission Ernie.
Did you catch Richard Allinson covering for your hero this week on the Drivetime Show.
Did RA present to your liking? Indeed did you tune in? |

Mark,
the presenter I hear the most at the moment is Sarah Kennedy. I haven't heard Wogan, Bruce, Vine or Wright for months. I only ocassionally hear bits of Chris Evans show now. I might hear a bit of Ross on Saturday morning & a bit of Michael Ball & POTP on Sunday afternoon and Walker and Titchmarsh if I'm in the car on Sunday evenings.
I've been listening more to a mix of Radio 4, Classic fm, Smooth, Gold and some online stations instead of Radio 2 mainly. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

This evening Desmond played a song medley performed by the Black & White Minstrels!
for younger members, they featured in a very popular show 1958-1978 of good old-fashioned songs, dancing and comedy sketches, pretty girls, but the male artistes were white folk with their faces painted black.
Sounds silly today but the older 1960s audience had been brought up on Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor and GH Elliott ('Chocolate-coloured Coon' on his record labels!)
Desmond said he rather regretted the loss of an entertaining show ..... but the next record Desmond played was by Otis Redding, nice one!

Des is a must for me.
He invented Theme Time Radio Hour. You can hear Robert Wyatt and Noel Coward, or something even more obscure, in the same programme.
Long may he continue to delight those of us with no barriers of taste. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Hear Hear, raver. I listen to it when I can.
Going back to the Black & White Minstrels, I remember being taken to see the stage show at the Victoria Palace in 1962-ish. The house was full, the show was highly proficient, nay excellent, and the audience loved it, without exception, for what it was, pure entertainment. Amazing how attitudes suddenly changed a few years later.
The George Mitchell Choir had a very distinctive sound and those of us who were around then can easily recognise it when we hear it today. It wasn't necessarily an American, or "coloured/black" sound, except when soloist Dai Francis was taking a lead, and it is a shame they came in for so much flak. _________________ Ron |

Next Tuesday DC is majoring on Beatles covers.
I'm sure this'll be just as enjoyable as the completely different repertoire that he featured in the Eric Coates special a few weeks ago. Count me in!
