Quite a spat on the Community Service issue!
I agree that punishment should mean what it says and that non-attendance and the like need to be addressed but can't really see the point in making those with a criminal record wear a distinctive uniform.

Also heard the discussion on retirement ages.
I must declare an interest, as I turn 60 soon and would retire tomorrow if I could afford it--not because I want to be idle but I yearn to be able to be more flexible with my time.
I could see where the editor from Saga Magazine was coming from but, my, wasn't she petulant? And her apparent assertion that retirement means twiddling your thumbs is an insult to those who remain active during this time.
Another thought--if older people continue to occupy jobs after the state retirement age, how are younger people going to get a foot on the jobs ladder?

Being an owner/operator of a small business, I can't ever see myself from retiring. Mind you, I'm not sure I want to either. _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |

I would have thought that those who simply sit back and "twiddle their thumbs", as it were, were candidates for an early grave. I'm surprised that a rep from Saga thought that the over-60s slide so easily into torpor. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I didn't hear the show today (I only really listen when somebody is depping for JV because he winds me up) but I'm surprised to hear that a spokesperson from Saga has such a minimal view as the one reported here.
The organisation itself is committed to the encouragement of an active and productive existence in a person's "third age" so I just don't get it.
Still, I'm glad I didn't listen because I would have ended up shouting at the speakers - and not get any work done either. _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |

As Paul Routledge wrote in the Daily Mirror a few years ago; 'The human frame is not designed to work indefinitely'. I think someone ought to tell this to these workaholics who would have everyone working until they drop if they could. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I am retired from the Post Office and I don't know how I found the time to go to work! Mind you I don't get up at 4.30am these days!
I enjoy being a granddad, writing stories and poems, playing the accordion, photography, and spending time with my family and friends. It's great being retired! |

A lot depends on your health and financial position too. My Father in Law has enjoyed his retirement from running a Hotel very much.
We treated him and his missus to a sea cruise a few years back and now he can't go often enough!
He loves his holidays and outings with his Bowls Club playing or otherwise.
I was quite worried about him retiring as he's always been a workaholic doing at least 18 hours a day.
I think it really helps if you have hobbies or interests too? so many elderly folk I come into contact with seem to have no hobbies at all - my late mother being one for a start. Day after day she'd be bored where as my old dad couldn't wait to get up and get into his workshop, loving every day!
I think I'll follow in his footsteps, I have so much I plan to do and I'm never, ever bored... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07
