|
|
From today's Sun newspaper:
TOP Gear host Richard Hammond is being lined up to take over Terry Wogan’s top-rated radio show.
Hammond, 39, has already filled in on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast slot and bosses think he would make the perfect replacement if Sir Terry retires.
An insider said: “They are excited about Hammond taking over. But they don’t want anyone to know as it may offend Terry or look like they want him to go by planning a replacement.”
Wake Up With Wogan is Britain’s most popular radio show, with 7.73million listeners a day.
The 69-year-old is contracted to carry on until 2009.

I have my doubts, but the Sun can be annoyingly reliable at times
Was this mentioned by Wogan this morning? |

Crikey!
I know what you mean about Sun being horribly reliable but they still talk bollocks about other things.
I really can't see Hammond, who's shows were fun to start with but then I didn't bother listening to the later ones, taking on the morning slot. I would imagine a lot of listeners not taking to it - it's not the cosy image that time of morning presents.
Plus, not sure how this would affect his Top Gear commitments.

I would doubt they would put an unknown on at breakfast. But since Hammond started his career in local radio, doesnt that make him an experienced radio presenter?
Celebrities are just people that are well known .By itself it doesnt mean they are good or bad presenters. Isn't Wogan a celebrity?
BTW Hammond is linked with everything these days. He was supposed to be the new BBC F1 host despite saying he hates F1. Maybe he will be the new Doctor Who as well. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Didn't hear Wogan this morning so can't say if it was mentioned or not. The last time he was supposed to sit in he was 'ill' after one or 2 days.
However I'll draw a comparison from when JV took over from JY. If I recall JV sat in for JY at the start of his long absence ( he was ill !) but I read later that once it had been decided Jeremy was getting the job full time he didn't do the show again until he took over. I think it was a few weeks before the news came out officially. John Inverdale and Brian Hayes covered until JY came back.
We'll have to wait and see. I hope they are wrong as I thought he was dreadful.

I also seem to recall that, over Christmas when Hammond was doing the Breakfast shift, he was absent ill for at least half the time, with you-know-who having to fill in (and being somewhat dischuffed at having to play the daft little games that the Hamster had set up). He has also admitted that he is not 100% recovered from his accident - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7261831.stm - and is never likely to be.
What I heard of him when he did make it to the office didn't impress me much - too much mumbling in his boots - so I trust that the Sun is just whistling in the wind. _________________ Ron |

I thought RH was fine as an occasional stand-in (but got a bit sick of his delivery after twenty minutes or so the last time he was on), but as a full-time presenter? Can't see it, or alternatively can see the Breakfast audience deserting in droves. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Interesting choice, not really my cup of tea to be honest but I can think of worse.
Isn't this the itme of year when the usual 'Terry is retiring' stories come out. |

So they put it in the Sun newspaper Mind you I think Tel is more of a Telegraph reader these days.
By the way does 'an insider' = one of the following
Bloke sweeping up after everyone has gone home
Lift engineer
Person filling up vending machines
Window cleaner
Richard Hammond

Has from Elisabeth Mahoney from media guardian been talking to the Sun.
Usually Guardian picks up this as they are cloned to Auntie.
Don't anyone tell Tel as he may spill his breakfast down his shirt. Bang the studio broken again.

Surely this was why Dickie Alice quite a BFBS. He knew that Wogan was on the way out and he wanted to be free to take the gig when Dame Lesley came a wooing! _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I open my heart and say that Richard Allinson would still keep the number of listeners flowing like Terry does and may even increase if he took over fulltime? The problem with Radio 2 they are looking for High profile named people to fill in the caps. It wouldn't happen over night with the listener figures etc if Richard Hammond did take over, as it does take time to blend shows in.
It's a shame that the way the station operates, but there is no announcement and if Terry was to retire it wouldn't just be sudden, as I don't think he's that type of guy who would go like some have done over the years?
It's all speculation and someone has been listening to walls in broadcasting house. Cheeky beggars |

Each to his own. Personally I'd flow straight towards the off button, but no doubt others will be doing the opposite. _________________ ~~~ Niblet ~~~

I agree with you Mark. Don't want "clever" people yapping at me first thing in the morning. Terry has been easing me into the day for years and I would prefer to have someone like Richard to carry on the good work.

Sir Terry has a big descision to make in august-does he let his 70th birthday pass without saying anything abuot his future on the breakfast show?Fact is he cant go on forever, and if he wanted an appropriate time to go while he's still on top this summer is surely it. |

Jimmy Old was into his 80's when he retired, Brucie is 80 and still going strong, 70 is relatively young so no 'big decision' for Sir Michael to make yet
I'm sure he'll take your advice on board when the time comes though. |

Bear in mind that Evans is on a 3year contract which runs out in around a year's time, and I'm pretty sure Terry's contract runs until next year. At the risk of speculating, I sincerely hope these timings are just coincidence! |

Simon could definetly turn his hand to that sort of show and is preferable to Hammond. I honestly can't see Hammond being succesful in that slot. Perhaps it's because he's such a t*t on Top Gear, perhaps he will be better on radio. |

I like Richard Hammond he has a nice voice, but will he be able to do the Janet and John story's with John Marsh? Janet and John storys on Tuesdays and Thursdays are some thing to turn the radio up for at 8.30 am it's something funny to listen to after the gloom and doom news reports . _________________

Hammond or whoever the replacement is would not do Janet and John, besides it's well past it's sell by date so no point in continuing with it. |

Richard Hammond replacing Wogan? Methinks not! Twice he's gone sick when he's supposed to be covering Wogan. Can you imagine the guy hosting the show permanently? He would probably go sick on his first day.
He's as bad as Sarah Kennedy for sickness. |

As I've noted elsewhere, Hammond has been reported as being in hospital with conditions unrelated to his accident, so we musn't be too harsh about his absence on Monday morning - shouldn't have been advertised as doing it in the first place but Radio 2 were obviously working on the same theory of patients' super powers of recovery as the NHS.
I agree, though, with the concensus that he would not be up to the job - I trust that it's just somebody's (The Sun's) flight of fantasy. _________________ Ron |

You are correct; Richard Hammond has suffered many health issues since his accident. I don't think he is suitable to succeed Terry Wogan.
It's such a shame that Johnnie Walker isn't up for hosting breakfast permanently. He always brings Wake Up to Wogan alive. |

I know your not a fan of Ken, but he will not be leaving in the near future. I could see him taking over breakfast?
How many names are in the frame now?
Mayo
Allinson
Hammond
Bruce
Chris E
Steve W
Pete Mitchell
or someone totally different? |

Who said anything about Pete Mitchell succeeding Wogan? Pete Mitchell is underused on Radio 2 - perhaps he could replace the smug, up-his-own-posterior, Ken Bruce?
