I'll reach the milestone of 60 in August (I can hardly believe it but there we are!).
It's a standing joke at work that the staff are looking about for things that I can start to claim.
So far I've come up with free bus travel and heating allowance, not to mention entitlement to entry to our local Aged People's Treat each December, which the family think is a hoot, but, as I have already worked on this as a volunteer for many years, I think I'll just continue on this basis for now.
Any ideas as to what else I can legitimately claim?

Just posed the question to my mother who adds free prescriptions. Alas you have to wait until you're 75 for your free TV licence and at 80 an extra 25p on your pension _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Hi Ian. Depending on your weekly income, savings, shares and council tax band you may qualify for a rebate. If you are still going to work though it is unlikely you will qualify for anything. The forms need a Philadelphia Lawyer to sort out! Unless like our beloved MPs you can get your accomodation, food and TV licence paid for by the rest of us! |

You can add sight tests to your list - one every 12 months unless directed otherwise by a consultant. Unfortunately, NHS dental treatment and vouchers toward the cost of lenses still have to be paid for, although you may be entitled to some help for these items - there is a means-tested assessment via the HC1 claim form, available at dentists and opticians. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Saga?.. Saga??.. I'm constantly hassled by Saga even though I'm only a mere 55! they even send me their creepy magazine and - continually send me details of their motorhome insurance policies!! I don't own a freakin' motor home!
mind you I might get a car insurance quote from them for over the 50s.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Some restrictions do apply, LEE - you have to be aged 40 or over and with a parent, brother, sister, son or daughter diagnosed with the condition. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Interesting thread this Ian, especially as I am also 60 in August. Bus travel is a bone of contention as different district councils have differing rules, my parents live in North Keststeven and own a holiday home in East Lindsey, on which they pay council tax etc. North Kesteven bus pass allows free bus travel within North Kesteven, East Lindsey bus pass, which they cannot obtain, allows free bus travel nationwide. A bit like the NHS really, a post code lottery. My partner and myself are travelling to see family who live in Torphins, near Aberdeen, in August, although we will both have a bus pass, we cannot use it for free travel outside North Kesteven district. Any ideas Cherskiy?

Thanks, BB. What date in August is your birthday? Mine is 18th,which means that I was born the same day as the Bishop of Liverpool, Rt Rev James Jones!
The free bus travel pass is being talked up tremendously round here as a national scheme. I'm already planning early autumn trips to Berwick-upon-Tweed and Carlisle and perhaps beyond. Are you sure it isn't just a case of North Kesteven kidding you on?
Hope you can get this sorted.

Oops! I forgot about the lower age limit! Thanks for pointing it out Cherskiy. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Hi Ian, 10th is mine. Can't get the bus pass sorted, some District Councils will fund the national scheme, and some will not. It is being looked at by the government to introduce free national bus passes, funded by central government, but if it takes as long as anything else I will probably be too old to enjoyit!

Hi BB - North Kesteven is better than South Kesteven. If you want to use your bus pass from Grantham to Lincoln you can do so until the boundary and then you pay!!
By the way B&Q Pensioner's 10% day is Wednesday locally and not Thursdays and you need a card!!
Need to start applying for things like fuel funds asap as they will not automatically give it to you and it's better in your pocket than theirs.
Believe that there is some credence in the bus pass being used countrywide, as North Kesteven used to give our vouchers which you could use on the buses, taxis or trains locally. This year they are only giving a pass. Still if I can use it all over the country could go down to visit my son in Brighton and not pay a thing.
The thought has just occured to me, does that mean that you have to change buses at each boundary? Could take a very long time to get anywhere.
