The biggest earthquake in the UK for nearly 25 years has shaken homes across large parts of England.
People in Newcastle, Yorkshire, London, Manchester, the Midlands and Norfolk felt the tremor just before 0100 GMT.

Yes, we were awakened here in East Warwickshire just before 1.00am, felt like a tornado (have experienced one of those) shaking the house, and oddly like something on the roof. Three of us were awakened, daughter slept through it. The noise from the roof I know was loose bits of plaster moving between the tiles and the insulation sheet.
It was a proper earthquake 5.2 centred in Lincs near Wragby where we had a little break last year).
In nearby Coventry a house wall has partially collapsed. |

People were telephoning the radio stations as soon as it happened.
Once the rattling of glasses and crockery in our cupboards had subsided I turned on Radio Trent and, because someone had twiddled the wrong knob somewhere, you could hear behind the music people calling in and describing how it had felt - they then replayed the calls properly a couple of minutes later. It was about half an hour before it was mentioned, as a "minor tremor" on BBC News 24 _________________ Ron |

I remember the last one, centred on Dudley five years ago, was a short bump and jolt, This was longer, a rumbling with sideways movement.
Many people slept through it (my wife and her mother too, so we learned this morning as she wondered what the fuss was about). It woke the birds up, though, and set off a few burglar alarms. No damage that I can see locally. _________________ Ron |

The News this morning said that it was felt as far north as Newcastle but I live 10 miles to its west and heard and felt nothing.
Perhaps its effects were more sporadic further away from the epicentre.

JW had some fun this morning - I Feel The Earth Move (Carole King), All Shook Up (Elvis), Good Vibrations (Beach Boys), Whole Lotta Shakin' (Jerry Lee Lewis). He played the Drifters' Under The Boardwalk, though. _________________ Ron |

I only live 20 miles away, but heard and felt absolutely nothing. Must have had other things on my mind.

Well, it woke me up here in Newcastle this morning.... thought a large truck was driving past the front of the house. Served as a earlier-than-requested alarm clock for driving down to Wales this morning - was interesting listening to R5Live on the way down and the reports of chimneys falling down in Gainsborough - more damage there than in Market Rasen. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looking at the map in today's paper, I think it just skirted round us.
Wish I could say the same of the (police?) helicopter that woke me at 3:45am today!

Woke me with a crashing sound, thought my grandson had run into the garage doors on my push bike, which he borrows to go to the pub

The big hoot on US chat shows last week, e.g. Jay Leno, was 'The English Earthquake'.
They reminded viewers what earthquakes were, showing film of collapsed highways in LA and towns reduced to rubble in Mexico, many casualties, then they showed newsreels in England from last week, of really concerned reporters, phone-ins from people whose CDs and birthday cards fell over, oh and in the whole country yes just one chimney did fall though a ceiling, one person injured in the whole country....... and it was headline news for six days |

Nearly as funny as what most of us feel about their Presidential Election process and campaigning. At least, it would be funny if it weren't for real. _________________ Ron |

Actually it was centred on Melton Mowbray, the Dudley one was some years earlier, and I don't recall feeling that one. _________________ Ron |
