Driving yesterday I listened to the JV show, firts time in a long time, and what is he on ?
We had an argument between Johnny Ball and someone from Greenpeace, which was interesting, well done Johnny, and all JV could add was what if someone is employed at a nuclear plant who turns up in a suicide belt and blows the place up scrapping for the shock tactics or what ?
...and then there was a discussion about Indian chefs working in Indian restaurants and the level of respondees was one bloke would had a bad curry in Poland once and it was no good
I woin't be listening again for a while |

Likewise, Nod.... he lost me completely a few months ago with similar tactics. I'll occasionally listen if I'm in the car and there's something newsworthy, for instance, but I'm more likely to put a CD on. I'm not interested in this shock-jock attitude he sometimes adopts, I'm afraid - I once thought he was a serious journo but I've seen (and heard) the error of my ways! If I want informed comment, I usually turn to R4 news, anyway. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Vine's flattered to deceive since he took over from JY.
At first I liked the fresh approach, and even more so the choice of music, he seemd more in touch and I thought that this was a positive change.
Nowadays he tends to remind me of an over-excited schoolboy in a playground argument, spewing out contradicting remarks in an attempt to trip his guests up. He goes from the sublime to the ridiculous at times.
He reminds me of an audio version of the "Daily Star" front page. |

These days you can practically predict which topics he will be covering, and sadly, the "red-top" level at which he will be covering them. The other day I read something somewhere about sisters who had mastectomies because close female relatives had died from breast cancer. At the time I thought "uh -oh, JV fodder if ever I saw any" and sure enough it's scheduled for this week.
Mind you, the people who ring in are partly responsible for the depths to which this show has sunk.... on the "libido" slot today some guy (on the face of it a genuinely worried guy) ringing in to tell the nation about his problems in "finishing it" . Why on earth would you want to share that information, and what could you reasonably expect to achieve from doing so, that you couldn't achieve by consulting a doctor or a counsellor? Grrrrh |
