|
|
So there I am watching BBC 4 tonight, all about Great Britain in the 40s and 50s, and a little red box appears in the corner of the screen saying "50s music"
So I press red and the channel changes to 301 and there's old Stuart Maconie and a boat load of classic 50s songs and film.... most of which I haven't seen before.
(Billy Cotton don't half look like my Father in law! )
It also covers music from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s...
Is this new or have been missing something? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Hi Santa, did as you said, it was very interesting and you can go straight to Freeview channel 301 and watch the compilation of excerpts from the decade they are showing, which I thoroughly enjoyed, facsinating.

I saw good clips from The Shadows, Alma Cogan, Bill Haley, Fats Domino along with embarrassing rubbish from the Mudlarks and Des O'Connor! |

I'm on Sky so I wonder if it will be the same if you are watching BBC 4 via that method?
When I can gain control of the set I'll have a go!

I liked them all, including the Mudlarks but Eddie Cochran stepping out of the giant TV screen was my favourite clip.
For some reason all the young kids in the audience were heavily chewing gum?? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Probably not Channel 4 - more likely to be BBC Four as stated above
Just press the red button from any BBC channel, I expect. (Channels 301 and 302 are where the BBC put their interactive content on Freeview) |

Hi Santa. The reason the audience were all chewing was that these Dick Clark TV shows were sponsored by Beech Nut, I believe. I remember seeing a clip once about sending several Beech Nut wrappers and 99c to the show and getting the record of your choice by return. WOOO! C'mon everybody! |

The Sixties are being featured today on 301. Stuart Maconie said that The Kinks 'You really got me' (1964) was the forerunner of 'heavy metal' music. I disagree, as I think Rick Nelson's version of 'Summertime' (1962) with its descending baseline and blistering electric solo by James Burton easily pre-dates the Kinks. |

That certainly would explain it! it was so exaggerated too.
The camera pans along the line of kids, all chewing away until one kid is seen gazing motionless into the distance. Once he sees the camera is on him he too starts chewing! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Just watched the 60's compilation, most of it very good, however, can't for the life of me understand why no Beatles, Yardbirds ( come on Jeff Beck on lead & Jimmy Page on rhythm guitar, when I saw them live), Manfred Mann, Beach Boys, Doors, Cat Stevens, Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Led Zeppelin & many, many more? I may be biased but without The Yardbirds & Manfred Mann there would be no Cream, Blind Faith or Led Zeppelin!
