Just caught a snippet of Wright 'interviewing' Kylie Minogue, here's a classic line from Wright:
"of course, no-one ever says anything nasty about you"
Erm, yes they do Steve! Wake up and smell the roses old son! |

I was channel hopping, honest! I can't stand Wright for more than a minute at a time (if that). |

Once again, Steve Wright has shown just how much he loves sucking up to celebrities. |

I didn't hear the Kylie interview but I did hear him talking with Jack Dee. Again, I don't see what the problem is with his interview style he may well "suck up" to people but it's a mid afternoon light entertainment show, he's hardly going to do a Paxman on anyone is he?
I've never heard anybody bad mouth Kylie either! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

He couldn't do a Paxman if he tried. He's too self-centred - and he's not interested in the story, he's just interested in hanging on to his seat. Somebody who thinks that an 80s "zoo" style radio presention format is seriously deluded - as are members of his audience who think likewise. He's perfect for a Radio 2 afternoon audience, perhaps?
Give me Mark Radcliffe anyday. Last night, he and Stuart M. were talking about Sonja Kristina and Frances Monkman (& co) in the most informed and informative way. Could Wright manage that? Could he hell. |

As as for bad mouthing Kylie - well, enough people bad mouth her atrocious noise that passes for music, so that's as good as. |

I quite like Kylie. I'm a "serious music" fan but I like Kylie all the same. She's a good performer, she sells truckloads of unashamedly good "pop" music and she seems like a person who doesn't really take herself too seriously.
And she has a lovely arse. |

I said this before but who would be interested in what Kylie, Paris or Jack Dee has to say really? it's just sickly entertainment for the afternoon.
Ken Bruce or Wogan would be exactly the same.
I like Jack Dee but his show Lead Balloon is actually pretty rubbish! Steve possibly thinks that too but he's not going to say that to him is he? a bit like Paul O'Grady on channel 4, it all sucking up stuff to me, Steve's no worse than others.
I think many people could do a Paxman if the vehicle was available. In fact I wish it was. I thought Jeremy Clarkeson was going to do this on his show years ago but even that turned into a praise fest. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

The problem is partly down to the people that the show bookers actually book. They deal with the PR companies and grab who they're told is available and when - and most of the time this is when the guest has something to push.
I want to hear from the person when they don't have something have to push and they're away from the clutches of the promotions people. Trouble is, they often don't want to do anything - because their PR advisers advise them not to.
The Steve Wright / Jonathon Ross etc etc show thing would be lost were it not for this regular, recycled, roster of "guest talent" and it shows all too clearly.
I think it's better just to avoid it all. |

I like Steve's interviews. I know he can suck up, but as a whole they're good fun and you certainly get a good idea of the person's character. They are, for me, the best part of the show and I'm glad more of them are being podcasted.
His interview with Paris Hilton years ago was absolutely fantastic and he really managed to bring out what a dull, vacuous airhead she is. |

Airhead interviewing airhead! It doesn't take the Wright to bring that out. She does that very well on her own. _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

heh. Fair enough, but as I've never heard her speak I thought Wright did a good job. Like I say, you get a sense of a person's character when they're on the Steve Wright show. |

The point about Steve Wright's interviews is that they're not supposed to challenge anything the interviewee is doing or has done. The idea is to make them relax and open up so the listener gets a real insight into their character. If he came down hard on everyone who appeared then guests would soon stop coming on the programme.
I interviewed the late Adrian Love some years ago, probably the best talk jockey we've ever produced. His philosophy was to give people enough electronic rope that they hung themselves and Steve seems to be doing much the same.
I've heard some really good discussions on "The Big Show" and some real stinkers. But I also know that some friends have enjoyed interviews I've hated, so I suppose there's an audience for most of them...
Yes, it's light and fluffy most of the time. Badly edited just about all of it, too. But it's harmless enough and sometimes can be informing. It certainly breaks up the afternoon and, working from home on my own, it feels like company, too.

You make it sound like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Earth - mostly harmless. Talk about damned with faint praise indeed.
I'm with Briant. This is the BBC. We should be expecting much better _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

Well that rules out Russell Brand, Chris Evans, Dermot O'Blimey and Aled Jones too. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07
