On this board we often use either of the above to mean the same thing when posting messages on this board about the guys/girls presenting shows etc
But are they the same thing. In my opinion they are not.
For example Sarah Kennedy is a presenter rather than a DJ whilst Richard Allinson is a DJ in my book.
What do others think.

For me the difference is their ability to make a show out of nothing. A DJ will play great music and react spontaneously to requests and listener interaction in a show having no unchangeable pre-defined content. It's always good to have a structure but who cares if it gets pulled this way and that way.
A presenter just reads stuff out and introduces records to a pre defined plan.
A show that uses a presenter has to have interesting content for people to tune in.
A show that uses a DJ has to have an interesting DJ for people to tune in. |

Isn't the term "DJ" a bit old-hat now? I picture the archetypal DJ being the pirate-radio "jock" riding the decks out there on the high seas and spinning them discs as the mood takes him. Somehow, the timeline-based touch-screen computer system in the studio doesn't evoke the same feel! |

Tim Smith classes himself as a broadcaster. Wossy is a broadcaster, not a DJ.
I could carry on and on. I would say a Disc Jokey are presenters on Radio One?
Mark yet again you bring up Sarah Kennedy. I understand you don't like her, but please could you stop attacking her in nearly every thread or post?

Doesn't read that way to me. The reference to SK in the opening post seems quite reasonable in the context. You're getting paranoid, Mark! |
