So I'm driving back from Norwich this evening listening to Stuart who plays the glorious "Teenage Kicks" and then proceeds to talk all over the beginning then "Mambo No5" and talks over that one as well...
It's not only Steve Wright who does this. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

It's policy on Friday night's Drivetime so they can get as many requests in as possible. |

I remember sometime last year cleaning my car one bright sunny afternoon. I was tuned to Steve Wright and he played an annoying track by that girl band (I can't remember who that are, nor do I care) "Push the Button" twice in an hour. |

Still no reply from the BBC - and it seems Wrighty's even more annoying since he came back. He seems to sing over ever record! (But I'm off work this week so don't have to listen )
Anyway... my reply to Santa:
SantaFefan wrote: | Ian, as it seems I'm the only Wrighty fan on here I'd reply to some of your points as follows...
1. Singing over the records - all the time!
Other presenters sing and talk over records don't they? Mark Radcliffe did it this afternoon, talking over the beginnings and ends of tracks. In my opinion, Steve's show is not a music based show, it's light entertainment. |
It may be "light entertainment" but it's still music-based, and the singing is just annoying. It's intrusive, not funny, and shows Steve's disregard for the music. I can understand he's trying to make it a party, as if the listeners are singing along but it just makes us all cringe in my office. As for Mark Radcliffe - just like the birthdays, showbiz news, and events round-up, it was a piss-take of Wright. Plus Emma Forbes was a bit annoying!
Quote: | 2.But if he doesn't much care for the features, why should we? He is always doing down Miles Mendoza's Website of the Day The Astrology section is always rushed and dismissed.
Does he or we, have to care much for the features? some of them are just rubbish! it's just lighthearted fun most of the time. Mendoza's websites are usually nothing more than laugh material either. The Astrology part isn't worth commenting on! |
Indeed. So if the features are rubbish they shouldn't have them.
Quote: | 3. Repeats the news every ten minutes.
I suppose his, or the team's comments on some stories are vaguely funny or intersting? just time filling - magazine stuff. |
Nah, the team don't get to give comments on the New News (only the stuff in the papers) - it's when Steve reads the latest headlines just 10 minutes after an actual newsreader has done it. There's no need.
Quote: | 4.I can't say I'm bothered whether parts are live or not, I'm sure other shows have similar sections of pre-recorded stuff? |
I'm not too bothered myself, but I do think it's deceiving listeners when they discuss something amongst themselves but are unable to discuss it with listeners - I'll bet loads of people text in their comments based on a 'talky bit' as they would on any other shows (eg when Chris has discussed food with the chef, or business news).
Quote: | 5. The playlist is almost exactly the same from day to day, just in a slightly different order.
I think most other dj's play the same rubbish day after day don't they? I've noticed this on Ken Bruce's show for sure. |
Oh, Ken Bruce's music is another of my bugbears - it used to be so good under the previous producer... However, I don't think he's quite so bad as Wright - basically, if you hear a new-ish record on the monday you can be sure you'll hear it every day that week.
Quote: | 7. He's not nearly as funny as he thinks he is. Wogan and Bruce are naturally funny presenters.
That's in your opinion though isn't it. I don't find Ken bruce that funny but I do laugh at some of the things Steve says. |
I think Wright can be funny, it's just that when he tries he simply isn't. But sadly he tries too often.
Quote: | 8. For instance, all that messing around in the lead up to the Big Quiz. But, hey, at least he gets to talk more at the expense of everyone else. It's primarily a talk show. |
Is it? I thought it was primarily a music-based entertainment show?
Quote: | 10. Is the only one on Radio 2 to play some terrible, terrible, kiddie records - such as Girls Aloud, Justin Timberlake etc..
Can't argue with that as I don't listen enough to notice but is he responsible for the playlist? maybe the "kid's stuff" is listed because of the time slot, late afternoon, kids with mums in cars etc?. |
Most of these tracks do appear between 3.15 and 4pm so probably are for the school runs - however, none of the stand-ins play them so I can only assume it's Wright's decision.
Quote: | 16. All helps to generate that live show feel ! "Love the Show" is part of the gimmick both with him and his fans as I see it, same as "Togs".
Mention "Love the Show" and everybody knows who you're talking about, so it works! |
I think it peaked as a gimmick about 3 years ago, when Tom Cruise did it. By now, it just makes him seem like a joke.
Quote: | 17. If a text or e-mail contains a request he'll either arrogantly dismiss it out of hand
It's not a request show. |
I know it's not - so don't read out the requests! Just read the "love the show" bit of the text! It's not rocket science.
Quote: | 18. In the banter with Tim and Janey he doesn't actually listen to what they say and keeps repeating what they've said as if it's his big idea. Would you listen to Janie Lee Grace?? again, I haven't noticed this particularly but I can imagine what you mean. I think it's part of his character to be "on top" all the time? |
True, you wouldn't want to listen to Janey, but it still makes him seem like a prat.
Quote: | 21. Lots of celeb name-dropping that I can't relate to.
Come on! is he the only one to do this? |
No, he's not but he's one of the worst offenders. It's the sort of thing that turned me off Radio 1.
Quote: | 22. I quite like his interviews but sometimes I can barely hear what he's saying because he's so far up the guest's backside. ...
I don't get that. I heard the Paul McCartney interview and thought it was very good, very relaxed. I also heard the Paris Hilton interview where it was obvious to me he was taking the pi$$. Given the time he has, it can only be glossed over can't it? it's not intended to be an in depth interview. |
Those interviews you mention are amongst the best, and I do think the interviews are the best part of the show. But, y'know, sometimes he's just too sycophantic.
Quote: | 23. Jingles - they never stop! .
I like jingles, I liked the jingles on the Pirates and early Radio 1, I don't have a problem with it. |
Jingles are fine, but there's no need for so many of 'em.
Quote: | He is complacent, coasting on reputation and the success of Radio 2. I believe listeners to the BBC deserve better -
Complacent? coasting? I don't think so, no more than Wogan or Bruce. Just maybe he's part of the reason for the success of Radio 2 - as he is now?. |
Ah, maybe he is a part of the success, but I do think he's coasting on the station's glowing reputation.
Quote: | Surely he doesn't want 7 million people thinking he's an idiot on a daily basis?
I don't think 7 million people would carry on listening to him if they thought that would they? |
Well, as I said above I think most of those 7 million listen because it's Radio 2 and because that's the station that suits them. With the exception of Terry it's the slot that's most important, not the presenter - that's why Drivetime has the same number of listeners now than it did under JW.
Quote: | I can understand why somebody may dislike Steve Wright as I dislike Evans and Allinson but I don't understand why so many on here seem to hate the guy? ( shooting himself in the foot )
Each to their own eh? |
I don't hate him - I just want him to be better, as I know he can be. |

I hate the smugness of Steve Wright. The Essex Boy tries his best to come across as American. He also tries to come across as if he's in the same league as Ricky Gervais, Jonathan Ross, Richard E Grant. The only difference is, their TV careers are still on-going, unlike Wright's.
Remember Steve Wright's People Show on BBC One in the mid nineties? No wonder it was axed after like one series or something! |

Oh, I remember a time when Steve Wright reminisced his childhood days when he would go cockle picking in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex. He made it sound like it was something only the rich and famous do. |

No, I did not get any response from anyone. I thought I'd at least get an acknowledgment of receipt!
However, to be fair to Steve I have noticed a couple of changes since my rant. He now nearly-always flags up a pre-recorded interview and the music isn't quite so repetitive. Nor does he play the "kiddie music" so much.
It's still frustrating that there's no real audience interaction but I have to be honest and say the show's not as annoying as it used to be. |

Not a complete result - he seems to be singing over the records even more, which I'm starting to take personally even though it winds everyone else up too.
I still think the "talky bits" need reworking - they often bring up topics that might make for interesting comments from listeners, but of course Steve, Janey and Tim are in a world of their own. |

Its disgusting. I hate when presenters do that. They have a special mute button for sneezes & coughs dont they? Every other station with more than 15 listeners does. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.....

Mark,
They just need to close the fader or push the "off" button attached to said fader. Both serve the same purpose- there is no mute button as such. _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

A good mark to Steve Wright, who at around 4:50 yesterday played one of my special favourites--Woodstock by Matthew's Southern Comfort.
A black mark to Steve Wright, who then faded the track out well before the end!

I have the Bonzos reissues, and although the 'Craig Torso Show' sketches were aimed at Jimmy Young (I think), they could also relate to Steve Wright.
Listen to the bit where Torso cuts off The Last Waltz on the Christmas Show bit - pure Wright. _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.

I slag Steve off as much as a lot of others.
It's only because of the repitition of music though, his actual show I quite like.
Since Christmas I seem to be enjoying the music a lot more especially the 2 records in a row from selected artists.
If Radio 2 had a rule where a DJ couldn't play a track if they played it the day before then Steves show would be one of the best daytime shows. |

The original posting by Ian Robertson on this thread is certainly imho one of the best postings on this site.
In looking at it again, I have been wondering has anything really changed in Steve Wright's performance-I think not.
Come on Mr Sheenan-sort it out. |

I'll often listen to the afternoon show when somebody else is presenting but very, very rarely when Wright is - mostly because he annoys the hell out of me for all the reasons outlined by Ian in the opening post. In my opinion he hasn't improved at all - he's worse.
But, of course, he's another of Shennan's favourites - just like the Insufferable Evans - so I can't see there being any change for some time to come. |

I never got any reply, not even a standard one. I think I'm now on a list.
The only thing that has changed is that he flags up the pre-recorded stuff a lot more than he did (especially interviews). |
