BBC Radio 2 has commissioned radio and television indie Made in Manchester Productions to create a special documentary about the much loved British comic Les Dawson. The documentary. titled "Laughter and Tears: The Les Dawson Story" will be presented by Jo Brand.
It will include one of the first radio interviews with Les’s daughter Charlotte who was less than a year old when her father died from a heart attack whilst on a routine trip to hospital in 1993. Executive Producer and Made in Manchester Productions’ Creative Director Ashley Byrne told RadioToday.co.uk: “15 years after his untimely death, Les’s observational comedy is still as funny as ever and we are absolutely delighted to have been commissioned to make this hour long tribute to one of Britain’s most sorely missed comedians.
“This warm documentary will look at Les’s roots and the early poverty-stricken world that ultimately shaped his comedy but it will also explore and examine some of his somewhat hidden talents too – from his piano playing, his writing, poetry and his numerous experiments as a straight actor.
“There’ll also be plenty of anecdotes about Les the devoted husband, father and friend. We’ll hear how he nursed his first wife through her battle with cancer and how he found love for a second time in his late 50s,” says Ashley.
‘Laughter and Tears: The Les Dawson Story’ will air on BBC Radio 2 at 10.30pm on Tuesday, October 2nd 2007 and was commissioned by the network controller Lesley Douglas. It is Made in Manchester Productions’ second commission for Radio 2 following the critically acclaimed Another Fine Mess: 80 Years of Laurel and Hardy (presented by Sir Norman Wisdom) which was broadcast last summer.
Made in Manchester is one of the few radio ‘indies’ to be working right across the broad range of BBC networks with commissions so far for 1Xtra, Radio 2, Radio 4 and the World Service.
