What is the right thing to do in the face of anti-social behaviour? It's a question being asked after the deaths of a number of people who decided to step in to stop what they saw as troublemakers. Here broadcaster Jeremy Vine explains why for him, sitting back is no longer an option.

It's OK having that philosophy until the bloke causing the trouble is built like a brick wotsit and brandishing a knife. Then what do you do? Invite him to share his deep-seated psychological problems? |

Or indeed if the bloke in question makes a complaint and you end up getting arrested for assault! _________________ "....you're wearing a plywood bow tie with Dundee United on it?" |

Very difficult decision nowadays.
I think it comes down in part to what kind of tolerance level you have. I'm no hero but I suffer from the "red mist" effect, wading in sometimes without thinking of the consequences and I've been warned about it too, specially now I'm in my 50s.
I made the local paper last week as I confronted four youths ripping out the flowers in the council maintained beds in front of our place here. Luckily for me, they went off after some verbal from me, but I boiled over when I saw them doing it.
On another occasion, a demented nutter was shouting abuse at people walking by. I tolerated that but when he clambered over my property and started banging on my windows frightening my elderly residents, I instantly went out after him despite a nearby ambulance crew advising me not to.
A fight followed after he attempted to get on a bus. Luckily, I overpowered him, managing to hurl him into the side of the bus and on the floor until the law arrived. I was a bit niffed that the bus driver soon took off though!
My opinion is that we should have more security on Tubes and Buses in the first place! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Maybe, but as I said, I'm no hero and I don't think I'd recommend it.
A couple of years back, my local chinese take away owner argued with about 3 lads which ended up in an unfair fight outside the shop and they killed him. He was a great fellow too.
I wonder where all this will end, it's getting seriously out of hand imo.
Yesterday, about 150 yobs attacked and surrounded our local Police station, injuring 3 officers and damaging police cars!! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I have stepped in a couple of times on the London Underground to prevent intimidating behaviour, both times I won. This has nothing to do with the fact that I am Female and 4'11. Both times were men picking on young girls. The men around me did nothing .
However I must say the few times I have seen threatening behaviour (knives etc.) the people were jumped on by Police, both LT and Met. Guess the Police have to maintain a low profile to do the really important jobs, not give themselves away. |
