|
|
BBC Press Office Release:
Comic Relief, transmitted on Friday 16 March 2007 on BBC One
In a section of the appeal programme, viewers were invited to donate money to Comic Relief and were informed that by calling in they could win prizes which belonged to a famous couple. The first two callers taken on air gave incorrect answers. The other waiting callers were lost and a third caller was heard on air successfully answering the question. This caller was in fact not a viewer but a member of the production team.
TMi, transmitted on 16 September 2006 on BBC Two and CBBC
Following a production problem with a live competition, viewers were led to believe that a member of the audience was involved and won a competition open to the public. In fact, the caller was a member of the production team. The programme team failed to seek proper advice before running the competition.
Sport Relief, transmitted on 15 July 2006 on BBC One
Viewers were led to believe that a member of the public was involved in and won a competition open to the public, whereas the caller was in fact a member of the production team. The BBC has found evidence that this action was planned as a contingency in advance and that the physical infrastructure of the competition meant that it would have been impossible for it to be run as was described on air, and warnings about potential difficulties in conducting the competition were ignored. This incident was not referred up nor was it declared to a BBC audit in March.
Children in Need, transmitted on 18 November 2005 on BBC One Scotland
In a segment called Raven:The Island in the BBC's Children in Need appeal's Scotland broadcast in 2005, viewers were led to believe that a phone-in competition, open to the audience, had been won by a viewer, when in fact, due to a technical mistake, calls from the public did not get through and the name of a fictitious winner was read out on air.
The Liz Kershaw Show, transmitted in 2005/6 on BBC 6 Music
In pre-recorded programmes, presented as if they were live, a competition was announced which appeared to feature genuine listeners phoning in to take part, one of whom would win a prize on air. In fact, in recorded programmes, there were no competitions or prizes and all of the callers were actually members of production team and their friends. A new producer took over the programme in December 2006 and stopped the practices as a matter of priority.
========================
Hmmm. Dubious practices seem to be widespread in the Beeb. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

They do seem rather widespread but I'm sure it's the case with ITV, Channel 4, etc.
All this phone in stuff really does need sorting out once and for all.. |

The BBC were reluctant to audit their activities. ITV & Ch 4 brought in external auditors to review their activities and which did find irregularites.
The deliberate deception perpetrated by the Liz Kershaw show and Sports Aid suggest that this was not a panic respond but rather a culture of deceit. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I'm not defending them, I agree it's out of order, I have personally thought all these phone-ins were a rip off one way or another. |

and now any contrary messages are being censored off the blog. I can understand why abusive idiots posts are removed, but why are sensible disagreements with some of the nonsense he has posted this afternoon been censored?
I seem to recall Chris making light of this whole scandal when it first erupted. I sense he knows more than he is letting on. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

It was the stand-ins that botched up the Popmaster competition. I'm not naming names, but .......... _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I have never taken part in a phone in let alone won one.
Just read the blog, not very exciting really, I can't work out if he's trying to make light of the situation still or if he's worried because he's done something wrong . I am sure he knows a lot more than he's letting on though. |

My girlfriend got onto Chris Evans's Saturday Show. She was promised an invite to his 40th Birthday Party but it never came. Perhaps she should complain to Ofcom? |

Alex Lester made heavy work of Popmaster when he sat in for KB last time around.

Please remember, that unlike ITV and Channel 4 no vast sums of money were ripped off the populace.
It would appear, despite the red-top headlines that the crime was that of panic and incompetence rather than any malicious intent. _________________ Geddon

That statement doesnt stand up to the press release issued by the BBC. That clearly says there were instances of a deliberate pre-planned deception.
And re other stations, the BBC stole for "charities", does that make it all right then? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Has anyone read the Chris Evans blogs today/
Hequotes
"The Beeb and it's staff are still reeling from the last twenty four hours. personally I'm already bored with it all and wish our presenters would stop moaning about it on the air, especially as they seem to be doing so via extremely weak half hearted attempts at irony. If your show can't survive without a phone competition then maybe you should consider another line of work, like a trappist monk for example"
I like Chris but this makes him sound like a self righteous little sh*t. |

He hasn't come out of this too well IMO. I think he was having a dig at Ken Bruce and others complaining about not being able to run competitions.
Fair enough, the competitions are only a very small part of what Radio 2 does, but Chris uses them as much as anyone else.
Also he was involved in the production side of both radio & tv, producing Wogan's show for five, so he knows well the shennanigans that have been going on for years as regards mis-representation and faking things. I've got little sympathy for these guys. They got away with stuff for years & now they are crying because they have been found out. Tough. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

He was clearly having a go at Ken and I personally think he's out of order, as you say Chris has used phone-ins as much as anyone else. I think in the case of Popmaster Ken is right to feel agrieved as it is a pretty big part of his show. |

Whether Ken should whine about it on air is an other matter though. Personally I dont think he should. But Chris is not the right person to make that point. Stones & glasshouses, etc. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I dont agree if only for the reason that listeners, as Terry always says dont want to know about DJ's complaints & moans.
They are there to entertain us, so they should keep their unhappiness to themselves. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I tend to side with TW and KB on this one. I think that putting stuff like Popmaster on hold is just plain stupid - and is merely a knee-jerk reaction from the kind of pussies who're in senior management positions within the BBC these days.
It's all being done to appease politicians - and the blue-rinse, hand-bag waving Daily Mail brigade. God help us all.
PS: And I think Chris Evans should keep his gob shut - if that's at all possible. |

It was clear yesterday that both he and Jeremy were getting a lot of listener correspondence about Popmaster - mostly on the basis that it was free so no-one was being ripped off! If every other text he gets is about Popmaster, he's bound to mention it.
And it's not like Evans doesn't hammer something relentlessly into the ground, is it? mange-tout, mange-tout |

Will you also defend the right of the producers of X factor to extort millions of pounds from the British Public?
I also saw last night that five were still running the 'House' competition. _________________ Geddon

The question is about dishonestly and mis-representation.
If the X Factor honestly states the rates that they charge and do not permit callers to ring in when the lines are not open then yes. Its a legitimate transaction. You know what you are getting & you know what you are being charged. What is wrong with that?
They have been audited by an independent body already. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I don't quite know what you're getting at. I don't condone these practices at all. I'm making reference to the fact that it's all symptomatic of the way that the BBC has changed and is now being run by a bunch of gutless numpties. That's a slightly different position to the one you're alluding to.
gfloyd wrote: | Opinions like yours will kill the BBC far quicker than the Daily Mail. |
What - by saying that the BBC is being run by people who couldn't run a corner shop? In fact, my views (borne out of bitter experience within said organisation and one from which I am glad to be free) are probably more in keeping with those of the Mail. |
