I can't stand Steve Wright and his dreadful outdated show on Radio 2.
As an alternative this past week I've been tuning into Suggs and his Afternoon Tea Show on Virgin Radio.
Would advise he plays great songs-he really knows his music.
Well worth tuning in if you want an alternative to Steve Wright. |

Why listen to something you don't enjoy.
In fact I don't like the daily schedule at all on Radio 2, so if I'm not working I tend to tune into other stations for my listening pleasure. |

I really, really can't see what all this outdated stuff is all about?
It's no secret that I like the Steve Wright show, it's light hearted, I enjoy most of his quips, impersonations, factoids, interviews, Americanisms, sarcasm and most of his interviews.
I even like the old woman's comments, in fact I find some of them very sensible! and Tim too has his moments.
It's not fanatstic radio but I feel happy listening to it. I can relate to Steve Wright being roughly the same age.
I don't for a moment think Steve's show is intended for muso's or for people expecting to hear only quality tracks with absolutely no interruption.
It's an afternoon "fun" programme that's different in content virtually everyday.
So what's so great about Richard Allinson's show?
I'm no expert on him because when he's on, well it's just a show. He talks ( reminding me of Gary Davis everytime ) about nothing in particular, he has people calling in and, in my opinion, creeps around them rather sickly, then plays some music. Again nothing great, just the odd track. I feel he laughs about silly things generally.
But take Walker, Parky, or Bruce. I like them too but they just go through the same old routine don't they? Acceptable routine in my books but their shows dont change in format every six months do they?
So where's this "outdated" stuff come from? |

What is important is that there are plenty of alternatives. Suggs does a good show, although sometimes I suspect its pre-recorded. If only everybody could do live radio like Steve Wright _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Come off it Santa,
To say Steve Wrights show is different in content virtually everyday is just the biggest untruth I think I've heard in years. |

Well are we talking content or format?
Of course his format is the same but the content changes daily to reflect the news of the day or the guest of the day etc. doesn't it?
How does Mr Allinson's show change? |

Well the inference from Mark M is that Steve's show is the same everyday, so I'm asking for examples of how other presenters shows vary so much - such as Richard Allinson's. |

I think it's fair to say Terry's show dosen't change much either but for me that's fine, I like it that way.
Same goes for Sarah, Ken and most of the other daytime presenters, the format changes very little if at all, I don't have a problem with this, if it works and pulls in the punters why change. |

Richard has coevered JW's Drivetime, done his night-time show, a Saturday afternoon show and numerous covers on R2.
On BBC Oxford he did an excellent Sunday morning show and also Allinsons Albums.
He now does a morning show on BFBS. Each show that he has done has different features, (eg. The Wall of Sound, The Long Song, Listen to the Music and of course, Allinsons Albums only features Album music and info on the artists) and on the present BFBS show, the focus changes regularly.
Richard also has a much sexier voice than SW

Well when he's covering a show, I'm assuming he sticks with that show's format, but all the other features you mentioned are music based.
As I mentioned earlier, I don't regard Steve's show as such, it's more of a "magazine" type format possibly the same for Drivetime, although I never listen to it..
As for a sexy voice.... he sounds a little smarmy to me. |

I'm afraid that about describes Steve Wright's show.
My cure for afternoon Radio2 dross is 6 music. Nemone (when she's not covering for Alex Lester) followed by Steve Lamacq, far superior! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

That's possibly why we like different shows, SantaFeFan. I listen for the music and don't really like what you term 'magazine' shows.
JW's comment in his book about being told 'The trouble with you is you're too into the music' sums up the difference between DJ's and 'presenters'.
As for sexy voice - well, that's all subjective too

It would also make a great competition. Sarah lists 3 of her symptoms and we have to guess which disease or disorder she is suffering from. The winner receives a years BUPA subscription.
To start this off today's illness has the following symptoms:
1. fears that minor bodily symptoms may indicate a serious illness,
2. constant self-examination and self-diagnosis,
3. preoccupation with one's body _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Getting back to the subject line, I always find that "a good alternative to Steve Wright" is to stick my fingers in my ears and sing "La, la, la, la" at the top of my voice.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Thanks for that Mark. Being stuck at home I need to be able to get away from the Mediocre Moron. There's only so much listen again. Oh God no! He's wailing again.
When George Clooney was on Desert Island Discs he chose William Shatner's "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" explaing that it was so bad that you would saw your own leg off and use it as a canoe to escape. Sums up exactly how I feel about this awful eighties throwback _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |
