The regular shows of Alex Lester & Janice Long come from Birmingham. As do Mo Dutta & Stuart Maconie's solo Saturday show. I don't know about the other networks.
Here are webcam shots of two that R2 use:

Well the 'restaurants' at the Mailbox include a few cocktail bars that do nice food but they are cool and you don't HAVE to eat there, we can sit at the bar Not much Real Ale though
I like Bar Epenary, a bit pricey but nice atmosphere, with so many champagne orders you sit there thinking you are eating in the same place as the Brum mafia! but you do see BBC Midlands Today or Radio WM newsreaders too, and there's often a Jamie Cullum wannabe playing on the baby grand piano which sits on a rotating platform, yeah it's cool.
Now then, today I did get to the reception desk at BBC Birmingham studios, and YES they do offer studio tours. I was told we might have to wait till August and was given the number of the lady who does bookings.
Only heard her answer machine today so I don't know anymore yet, but before I call her again what would we want to see/do on a tour? If, as was indicated in an earlier message, Stuart Maconie does his Saturday show (live?) there, wouldn't that be the coolest tour for us? But is it live, and is it broadcast in August?
Of course Stuart's show might not be a tour option for Beeb, but worth asking about? It would great if a dozen of us could drop in on Stuart un-announced
If we have to do the tour midweek we will likely end up seeing Les Ross or Paul Franks

Alas the webcam at the weekend, when Stuart Maconie is broadcasting his solo show, now shows that berluddy Steve Wright thingy of the midweek. However, when Stuart took over the Saturday show from the whinger (and had the full three hours) he did indeed broadcast from 'Brum', using the same studio as Alex Lester. Here's a webcam shot.
However, I don't know if this is still the case. I assume it is.
I'd certainly like to join such a tour and see the bits Radio 2 use if it's possible, but I would need as much prior notice of dates as possible so as to arrange time off work etc. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I'd be interested in coming but would need some notice.
I have a feeling that Stuart's show or parts of it could be recorded on a Thursday when it's not live. It might have been a one off though.

I would be up for a trip, so count me in. Early August might be tricky (for me) as I'll be at the Edinburgh Fringe - and there's every chance half of Radio 2 will be there too. Saw loads of 'em up there last year. |

I like the sound of that John. Count me in. Although Stuart Maconie would probably try to strangle me:- I'll take the risk and hope that he doesn't have a box to stand on that day |

Yep, I'm game - just not August 11th, since I've got a low-level photographic shoot on in the Borders that day (unless the weather's cr*p, of course!). Then again, if that's the only day you can get, I'll probably still come down anyway. Wouldn't mind sitting in on Stuart Maconie's show. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

August would be good for me... unusually so far, I have a clear diary for that month- Saturday would be my prefered day, if possible.
A studio tour would be great, with or without a broadcast going on IMO.
Although we may have to strap Rachel down to stop her sniffing Alex Lester's studio chair.... Down, Girl! _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

Hi John-Yes definetly up for this in August-a trip around the studios would be fantastic.
Happy to join in for something to eat/a few beers afterwards if that's what decided.
Hopefully the date chosen doesn't clash with Chelsea FC playing at home.
Good work John-organising something like this must throw up a few interesting challenges.
Cheers |

Well, I don't suppose all of the regulars here can make it, just those who are interested (and grateful to John for the work he's put in so far) or who haven't got other commitments. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I may risk a lager-shandy....any more than that and you run the risk of me running naked around Birmingham City centre, singing a selection of show-stoppers from Hello Dolly!
We should consider a Curry- Brum is famed for the quality of it's Ruby's Plus curry-houses cater for those not wanting curry, which is a bonus, when you're trying to please a large group of people. _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |
