The move of five BBC programming departments and 1,500 staff to Salford was finally confirmed today after the broadcaster agreed terms with the site's developer.
Peel Holdings will begin initial building work at the MediaCity site earmarked for the BBC's Salford base within days, with major construction starting in September.
The departments moving to the site at Salford Quays are BBC Children's and Children's Learning, Five Live, Sport and parts of Future Media and Technology.
The BBC director general, Mark Thompson, described the move to Salford as a key part of the corporation's future.
"The modern multimedia broadcast and production centre in Salford will shift the BBC's centre of gravity away from London, bringing a range of creative benefits to us and, I hope, helping us to better reflect and represent the whole of the UK," Mr Thompson said.
The controversial proposal to move BBC staff to the north west of England, with the aim of making the corporation less centred on London, was floated in June 2004 in the corporation's Building Public Value report.
Mr Thompson formally threw his weight behind the move in December 2004, with Salford confirmed as the site for the development in July 2006.
Last autumn the Salford move seemed to be in jeopardy after Mr Thompson threatened that the BBC would pull out of the project if it did not get the licence fee deal it was asking for.
However, the government effectively forced the BBC to go through with the move, even with a less generous licence fee settlement than the corporation had hoped for.
The corporation also needed final approval from the BBC Trust for the move.
There has also been speculation that Ofcom's proposed public service publisher could be based at MediaCity.

I very much doubt all the five live presenters will move there? |

This is just the start of the problems for the BBC. Persuading the bulk of London staff to move north will be the bigger one. Many of those based at TC and BH resent the idea, and who can blame them?
I think it is a barmy plan born out of political correctness to appease those who do not favour the london-centric nature of the BBCs operation.
I wonder what will happen to the Shepherds Bush Donut eventually? |

This is all part of the greater plan to make Central London a self governing principality. A tax haven for the rich and famous. They're just trying to move out the cheaper parts of the BBC that they won't want when the time comes. |
