This 30th Anniversary documentary is really great. Dead interesting to hear the actors tell how weird and pretty poor they thought the script / project was.
The screentests are illuminating - didn't know Kurt Russel auditioned for Han Solo. Perry King also auditioned, ironic really since he did play Han Solo in the America radio adaptation!
I really like these kind of documentaries. I remember a few years back they did the same type of show for JAWS 30th anniversary.

Kurt Russell and just about everyone else of that age group auditioned for Star Wars - some of the audition tapes were featured on the recent DVD makeover of Part IV, ISTR.
Funnily enough for someone who's dead keen on skiffy, I never saw it at the cinema when it came out in '77, nor Empire. I did see all three back-to-back one Saturday morning after 'Jedi' was released, though. It put me off the franchise for life!
('Fraid I was raised on Star Trek - weekday nights on BBC1 in the mid-seventies. Classic stuff for an impressionable young lad at the time....)
I'll grant you the documentary was interesting enough to listen to, though. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Chersk,
I can still remember coming out of the ABC on the west road after seeing Star Wars - I have a vivid memory of feeling like the cinema was in a bike shop!!! Thought about it all the way home on the bus.
However, I'm with you on the Star Trek. I put JanewayDar on to this a way back but there's a site that does Star Trek audio drama - www.DarkerProjects.com.
Have you heard the new Blakes 7 audios? Hmmm, jury still out. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Yeah, I enjoyed the documentary on Star Wars and I'm looking forward to next week's FNIMN (even though it seems like it's going to be all the cliched "space" tracks).
I didn't see Star Wars in the cinema, but remember loving it when I saw it on ITV, on it's premiere. I saw Empire and Jedi in the cinema and think the original trilogy is great (the second lot is not). |

I saw the first Star Wars on the big screen back in 77. It really was something at the time I can tell you.
I remember being completely gobsmacked when the "enormous" Battle Cruiser drifted over the screen right at the start.
I said something to my mate like " 'kin el, this is going to be good!"
and later trying to explain the film's realism to my dad!
I don't think there had been anything quite like it before... |

I love Star Wars.... I can recite the script from the three original movies from memory. Darth Vader Rocks...or so I thought until, I was horrified by the later ( earlier movies) when it was shown that he'd murdered all the younglings: that just ruined the whole story for me - completely trashed my childhood hero - he was my kind of bad guy but the later movies spoiled all that. |

Darth Vader is the best (worst?) Baddie in the business.... How come the bad guys always get the coolest costumes though? _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

I don't know... I was impressed with the image of ultimate power and ruthlessness of Vader when I first saw the films but maybe the relentless Borg have overtaken Vader... |

I took my kids to see it in 78 at the SKC cinema Gutersloh, blew my mind those special effects, kids were fine even though they were only 7 & 8. My son has always been a Star Wars fanatic since then, he bought the DVD box set last year & watches them over & over. Glad he's left home!

Imagine how much more of a bad guy he'd be though if they'd used Dave Prowse's voice instead of dubbing James Earl Jones....

Have you not seen the DVD extra's where they show the original filmed footage with Big Dave speaking the lines?
Hysterical!

i like spaceballs take on starwars with rick moranis as big helmet.
big helmet comes right upto the camera doing the heavy breathing.
then he whips the helmet off and gasps " i cant breath in this thing"
great stuff
in my opinion they should have left it at the original trilogy even if we all thought at the time " what do they mean episode IV?"
the original was the best _________________ "Timpani!, Timpani!, They've all got it Timpani!"- All drummers know the pain of skin trouble. |

My image of Vader was also spoilt by the prequels - previously I'd found him quite scary, a really evil, villainous warrior. But it turns out he's just a sulky teenager with a mother fixation. Jeez! Get over it, Anakin... |
