Good to hear Richard Allinson using his retro pack of jingles on Allinsons Albums in respect of his debut on BBC Radio York earlier today.
A good jingle package makes such a difference to the show you listen to. |

I was told years ago too many jingles can make a DJ weak. Sarah Kennedy doesn't need to play jingles, Except the traffic one, and the late John Peel never used too either. |

I'd agree with that, for me jingles only need to be there to make you aware of someting about the happen , eg news, traffic.
Many use them as fillers because either they have nothing else, their timing was wrong going into the news etc (and one certian DJ then plays them and goes late ), or maybe they just like the sound of their own name
R2 may only use some of them because of a regulatory requirement that you have to identify the station every so often ? |

I would agree with Mark O, that a lot of DJ's need jingles to remind listeners who they are listening to. Without wishing to get personal, there are very few people who will not recognise Kennedy, Wogan or Evans on the radio. However most other DJ's are less recognisable and depend more on jingles to jog the listeners memory for those Rajar diaries. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Good point.
Personally if I enjoyed a certain show, and didn't recognise the DJ, I would make the effort to find out who it is. Haven't done that for a while though
Some of them cretainly overdo their name jingles. |

Chris Evans only uses an opening jingle at the top of the hour and after the 6pm news, apart from that he uses the traffic and news one. Wogan is the same.
I noticed Mark Goodier used to play a music out from the news and he does this on Smooth sometimes.
Before Wrighty ditched the old carts they used to have to fit extra machines in to the studio as he needed a bank of them to play all his carts Steve just like jingles and always have done. Its always been a part of his show now and in the early days at Radio 1, and then he used to play far more than now.
Don't get me wrong I like jingles, but some go and sound better on certain shows. |

Isn't it a question of balance.
At one end of the spectrum we have Sarah Kennedy who doesn't have/believe in having /using any jingles in her shows to the other end of the spectrum where Steve Wright's use of them is somewhat over the top.
I would suggest a good top professional presenter would use just enough of them to "glue the show" all together at the right time without them being too obvious/in your face etc.
Richard Allinson has got the use/balance of jingles in his shows right imho. |

Is that "retro" as in, from times gone by, Mark?
So what is so wrong with Radio 2's late 90s retro style of jingles?. True what "they" say , if you hold onto something long enough, it becomes fashionable. |

Yes Rachel-my use of the word retro is linked to the 90's decade-just my view/opinion I might add.
I think the point on the Radio 2 package/set of jingles is thay don't seem to be/sound very modern-certainly they don't strike me as very 80's, 90's at all-they seem to remind a number of us of an age long before that-best described as old fashioned I would say. |
