I know I should wait for a couple of days to post this but I was not impressed by last night's offering.
This was a rare case of the whole being less than the sum of the parts. Two good and knowledgeable broadcasters shoehorned into one programme and it didn't work for me.
Mrs G wanted to know why, having finally got used to Mark R in the late night slot, things had to change for no good reason. there was an air of quiet desperation about the segment of the show that I caught last night.
A record of the week to be picked by the listeners next week.
A musical chain in the style of the old connections thing that Mark did.
I know that market share in London is important, but why, oh why does it have to ruin the listening pleasure of the rest of the country?
Needless to say, a version of this WILL be going to the BBC, which will no doubt end up in the trash without being read. _________________ Geddon

Tell you the truth, despite the jingles and the trailers, I completely forgot it was on last night. Did hear a minute long snatch of something around nine but it was just chatter, and I turned the radio off again without realising who it was.
If I remember, I'll try and listen properly to some more tonight. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

It was never going to work and it never will. You can't have a new double act where both parties are established solo presenters...tis the worst idea in the the long history of really bad ideas...... a sidekick, yes that works because the sidekick is the underdog, the butt of the jokes, the fall guy , the rolling eyes of despair in the face of the self adulation and abject ego. |

Mark Radcliffe was previously part of a 'double act' with Marc Riley (now on 6 music) on Radio 1 as 'Mark 'n' Lard before joining Radio 2. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

But Kenny was the entertainer and Dave Cash was the Muso.
Another bad double act:
Reid and Wright - Mike Reid and Steve Wright. Unlike Mark and Stuart, neither talented DJ's _________________ Geddon

Well, I had another go at listening on Tuesday night - the fact they were in separate studios didn't help the flow of the show, it felt stilted and disjointed.
I think I'll give up for a few weeks then return to see whether they've improved any. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I have enjoyed their shows this week, especially tonite with Noddy Holder on, the wee wee take of the toaster instructions, prior to use, had me in stitches. Then so did the story on Wogan this morning about the drunken fishead getting the cheese on toast popping out sideways onto his bare belly, yes I know, easily pleased.

Agree, was an exceptional show tonight. Noddy is always great stuff - they had a long conversation about Life on Mars (the tv show) without trying to give the ending away, and failing.
This was a great show, loved it. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

I have enjoyed all I've heard this week, and was lucky enough to hear the entire 2 hours last night and thought it was brilliant. Great stuff!
Having previously been dubious about the slot, I'm converted. I still have problems with the placing of other programmes, but I can see myself tuning into these 2 far more often than I listened to Radcliffe on his own. |

I like the Stuff and Nonsense spot because I like to figure out what is the Nonsense part! They were absolutey flabbergasted at the cost Barbra Streisand's people wanted for the tour.
The Saturday Night Fever bit on Listen & Learn didn't convince me like a lot of Maconie's Critical List choices did. But I loved them agreeing that Walter Murphy and The Big Apple Band's 'A Fifth Of Beethoven' was pants, as was David Shire's 'Night On Disco Mountain'! _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.

Without a doubt, the worst show on R2. It's just a competition to see which one can speak with the strongest accent. It's plain awful, it doesn't work and wastes a good slot. |

Well that's your opinion Rachel, I find the show amusing and the music, on the whole, good; still would be a dull world if we all liked the same thing. I will listen, you won't and the opposite for Drivetime.

yeah BB from the few I've listened to, the music is ok .... but then, I love music.....
The chat though, is like the early stages of a fight in Canal Street.... .....
yep; it would be a drag if we all liked the same |

Which Canal Street is that Rachel? Canel Street in Nottingham used to be a bit rough.

Manchester I suspect.
I caught about half an hour one night last week and wasn't impressed at all. Too much chat.
The way things are going I'll no longer be an R2 listener by the end of the year.
It's getting worse by the week.

Well, I've just heard a class conversation on tonight's show about Glenn Roeder, stemming from a texter swearing he saw him coming out of a public toilets in Blandford Forum dressed as a council employee, holding a bog brush and bottle of bleach.... (The bit about him ordering pie and chips in the third person made me lol! )
Andyandy, it was on just after 2020 tonight, so listen again if you haven't heard it.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Just listened Cherskiy, brilliant, they are like "Boys Behaving Badly" on the radio, no wonder Rachel & Helen don't like it, "it's a man thing" girls. Bet Nat likes it though Let us know Nat and I'll share my chocolate suggestives with you on the naughty step.

Not so much that I don't like it, I just can't be bothered with it.
Anyway it's only on a very rare occasion that I listen to radio at that time. I don't care for the mish mash that is on after 10.30, a time when I listen more regularly.

Some great music played tonite and being an ex-rocker, of a certain age, The Beach Boys & Strolling Bones went down well with me. Had to laugh at Rufus Wainwright taking the wee wee out of Stuart's northern accent. I think this show just gets better as the chemistry between these two seems to create some magic and hilarious moments. Much of the humour is laddish, IMHO, but it appeals to me as it is not really nasty, just irreverent.

Not nasty or crude, unlike RB who seems to be scraping the bottom of the toilet bowl for material (sometimes I'm cursed with a vivid imagination! ) - I guess I'm warming to the pair of them. I don't find all of the talk funny, it's a little wearing at times, but there are some pearls among the swine.
I did like one of the wrong answers to "Nonsense and Stuff" the other night, I really wanted to visualise "Icelandic avant pop kelpie" Bjork amassing a collection of British bitter beer mats, and writing to a brewery in Cockermouth to see whether they would send her a rare "Snecklifter" one! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Speaking of pixies above, the duo have just played a track by the Pixies and now Primal Scream is on - it's just like the Annie Nightingale Request Show circa 1989.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Yep, it's growing on me a lot: this is attributable to the music that's being played as much as the banter between the lads. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I'm getting used to the boys. My main complaint now is about the time - it should be either 9 - 11 or 10 - 12. _________________ Geddon

I'm just not a huge fan myself... I prefer my Maconie undiluted - you see, I find the who played on what track a little geeky and boring - naturally he's still my favourite tho'
And why is it called radliffe and maconie anyway - it ought to be maconie and racliffe (like all other pairs over the years - always aphabetical) _________________ I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering. |
