He died quite so time ago: 5 weeks or thereabouts, so the BBC are a bit late with the news on this _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Sorry to hear of this, he seemed like a nice fella, sympathies to John + co.
I don't know of the reason for the late news, maybe they wanted to keep it private, understandable if that is the case. |

I hate this disease cancer, with all of my heart, my thoughts are with John Major and his family and I hope Terry Major-Ball did not suffer for long.

There is also a nice article about David Jacobs in the Telegraph today, but I won't post it for fear of comments. |
Interesting article, you should post the link to David Jacobs, I may not like his radio style, or when he was a juror on Juke Box Jury, however, he is a radio icon and I respect his musical knowledge and genuine enthusiasm for radio & music. No one can deny this.

Yes the article does seem to take it out on Stuart Maconie in particular. I fear that Julia will stop taking the Telegraph after this !! _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I read that the deceased Mr. Major attended a secondary modern school in the east end. He might have been an ok geezer then. |

He ran away from the circus to become a banker. Also well known as a manufacturer of garden gnomes. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Well the ire is mainly directed at Maconie. He is referred to as "a gormless-sounding colt called Stuart Maconie, who once informed Five Live listeners that rugby union was "a game played by solicitors". Yes, and dentists and architects, too, and every one of them could give your backside a fearful hiding, you mardy boy"
Not my words but those of Michael Henderson the journalist who wrote the article you understand.
Evans gets away lightly. He bunches Ross, Evans & Maconie together and says that "These people, and others like them, all sound terribly pleased with themselves" _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I would say that of the first two, but in my opinion Maconie has better intentions and I think he is a much better radio presenter and journalist as a result of it. The other two just have big egos to satisfy. |

The word proper is subjective. Maconie has a musical knowledge and manner of delivery that is much better to my ears and he was a damned good writer when he worked on NME. |

Well proper as in started at aged 15 and came up through the radio business. Actually I dont really care where they come from really. Some of the better presenters have lived a bit, which Evans has for sure!
Actually Maconie is ok in a music led show. He just doesnt seem to have a lot of interest in things beyond music & Wigan FC. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I still would rather listen to him than listen to evans playing silly games and shouting at me all the time. Maconie has a dry sense of humour, but evans doesnt seem to have anything. I find him really really boring and i resent the money that is paid to the bloke.
And talking of who is a proper radio presenter and who isnt, i seem to recall that jimmy young was once a music hall crooner until the beatles blew him off stage and he didnt do to badly on radio over the years. So what is a proper radio dj then? It doesnt matter really. Are they good to listen to - Maconie is (for me) but evans isnt. |

Looks like you have all found the David Jacobs item without me.
FYI, Terry Major Ball didn't come from the East End of London, but went to Stonleigh East School which is near Croydon! |

However, the Telegraph has the best obits going. I try never to miss them. So tongue in cheek.
As in "Mr X was a patron of the Arts, he never married"
Whatever your politics, they are good. |

Yes I would agree that the Telegraph is the best written paper around at the moment. It seems to be able to seperate news from opinion as well, which is something that other broadsheets are abandoning, to the extent that you dont get objective reporting at all now on many topics. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I'm a regular reader of the Telegraph which is a bit pro- Conservative but hey, lets not grip.
I read the obituary and although I'd never heard of him, he seemed like an amiable, pleasent bloke. Got on well with the press but told them nothing - well done!
The picture in the telegraph has him surrounde by people dressed a Gnomes for his past occ and he looks a decent bloke so rest in peace and sympathies to his family. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |
