|
|
As you may know Gambo has a new feature playing all the UK bands who have had number 1 hits on the US charts. He is playing them in chronological order. Tonight he played Hermans Hermits "Mrs Brown you've got a lovely daughter" [complete rubbish btw] and the Beatles "Ticket to Ride".
Its a very interesting and innovative feature.
Here's the question: can anyone tell me how many UK artist singles have made number one in the US over the years? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I've no idea, but I like the feature.
A couple of weeks ago he played Pet Clark's Downtown followed by Eight Day's A Week, a Beatles' track that was never released as a single over here. 2 great tracks back to back, IMHO anyway!

Hi Helen
He is at 1965 at the moment so next up will be The Rolling Stones and I Can't Get No Satisfaction and then more Herman's Hermits I'm Henry VIII, I Am
There were a lot of UK artists making #1 in the Billboard Charts in the 60's but less in every decade since although I'm sure that the 80's threw up quite a few: Culture Club, Phil Collins, Duran Duran and the like. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I liked "Mrs Brown you've got a lovely daughter", it wasn't bad at the time unlike the hideous sight of a young Peter Noon singing it with those manky teeth he had! |

Actually I did as well! I think it was from a film that was mentioned recently, must have been on SOTS.

From the film of the same name, apparently, a vehicle for Herman's Hermits (no, I don't know it). I did at first think it might have been used in one of those dreadful Confessions of... films starring Robin Askwith, but can find no reference to it there.
As to the number of UK acts who have made No 1 in the States, I'm sure Gambo will tell us somewhere along the line. I can't find a ready answer and it's no use trying to add up all the records I think are British from the Billboard listings because there are bound to be some I think are British that aren't, and vice versa. _________________ Ron |
