True. However, it is an undeniable and unfortunate (and sad) fact of life that they are the very people who make the world go round (even though a few of them have been found out and it seems as if the world has come to a stop just recently). I won't go on - it makes me very cross and this is supposed to be a cheerful thread. _________________ Ron |

That was wonderful to see! He was so amazed at hearing for the first time that his mouth opened and his dummy fell out and what a lovely smile from him . |

Yesterday (Valentines Day) I ordered some LED bulbs on the interweb, they arrived today as expected. In the box, along with the bulbs was a mini packet of love hearts. I thought awwwwwwww... sweet. |

The Plumber.
France was freezing last week. Cornwall is freezing this week- the central heating broke down on our first day ( Saturday), it's just been fixed.
Anyone thinking of a nice weekend surfing in Cornwall over Easter- don't bother, the sea is as cold as a Polar Bear's dick- the wind is freezing- ten minutes in the water, I was blue and needed life support, we're going home tomorrow and I've cancelled my trip to Northumberland for next week because it's even colder there ..... if anyone has any spare degrees going..... I'll take em off your hands... |

It still seems as far away as ever!! Indeed, the following weather saying seems set to come true this year Christmas in mud, Easter in snow. The following have certainly proved to be correct this year. As the days get longer, the cold gets stronger. And If candlemas be fair & bright, winter will have another flight. If candlemas be shower & rain, winter has gone and will not come again. Candlemas is 2nd February and yes, it was fair & bright. Just how many 'flights' is winter allowed?! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Certainly none here... 3C in the sun today.
I've just dug the car free of 18ins of drifted snow in the driveway. _________________ Ron |

Not today but ....
When I got in yesterday there was a message on the land line from my son ...he was ringing to have a natter and for my granddaughter to say thank you for her Easter Egg from me ...I could hear him saying to her it was the answerphone and to leave a message ...she came to the phone and said "Leave a message" ... did make me chuckle |

Just a tiny thing really. Yesterday I parked in a Sainsbury's car park where the cost of parking for up to an hour was 60p. I didn't have change so put in £1 (no change given).
It said on the ticket that if I spent over £10 in Sainsbury's I would get back parking charges up to an hour.
My bill at the end showed that they deducted my whole £1 instead of the 60p I'd expected . |

My laptop had been driving me nuts . I had given up on using a mouse as it wasn't working and the keyboard button had become intermittent.
I went to the expert as recommended by the software chap we use. He said it was just rather worn and suggested I try plugging a mouse into another socket which I hadn't realised was suitable.
Bingo! It worked perfectly! He said "No charge for diagnosis only" so I put a donation in his collecting tin for the local children's hospice. |

How lovely!
I bought a couple of summer tops in Marks today only to realise when I came home I had ordered one of them on-line the other day.
That'll teach me to look closer when I see the "Up to 50% off" rail ...all I could see was bargain! |

Hearing 'Diamonds And Rust' by Joan Baez on Steve Wright's oldies today, a wonderful song that actually makes you stop what you're doing and listen.
And Ken Bruce (of all people) also played it a few days ago. It made a change from the usual banal rubbish he plays. |

Great song,Schizoidman.
This bit .....
"My main problem however is that every time I visit friends of mine in South Wales who run a hotel I run into this slightly odd and usually very drunk guy who for some reason is convinced that I am the Bishop of Bangor"
.... from a post in the Coffee Bar by ruddles had me chuckling.
Sounds like something straight out of a farce. |

Yesterday I went with my walking group on a lovely 8 mile walk around Chorleywood, Sarratt and the Chess Valley. The company was good, the scenery beautiful and we felt lucky to be out and about knowing what weather was due in the next couple of days. |

Good pubs in that area! My wife was born in Amersham and lived in Little Chalfont and we're down there often. A walk from the car park to the inside of the pub always brings a smile to my face, especially when the days are dark, damp and cold!

I'm sponsoring a friend who is taking part in the London Marathon this year
He has been having problems with his landline and just as he was going out for a training run a technician arrived to fix the line. They got talking and my friend told him what he was doing and for who. Without more ado the technician emptied his pockets of all the change he had to donate towards the run and apologised it wasn't more ... my friend was overwhelmed at such kindness from a complete stranger.
There are lots of lovely folk in this world. |

Today I had to nip into London's West End to pick up some video and audio equipment I'd bought. I was driving south down Charlotte Street in very busy traffic (of course) and wondered what a hold-up was due to. A man in a parcel delivery van ("white van man") stopped, got out of his van and proceeded to help an old and frail old lady across the road. I guess she'd been waiting for ages. He stopped traffic in both directions.
When they reached the other side, she grabbed him by the collar, pulled him downwards and kissed him on the cheek. Those who could see what was going on didn't sound their horns or get impatient in the least.
Lovely. |

Just back from a very good week in East Anglia, staying between Lowestoft and Corton and spending lots of time with an old friend. On Sunday I drove to East Bergholt for a 4 mile circular walk via Flatford where I stopped for lunch and found I was also nicely in time for a one hour guided walk looking at places which Constable painted. Very enjoyable and I learned a lot more about him. And the rain kept off, as it had done all week . It could not have worked out better. |

Actually I should have posted this over a week ago as it goes back to the Sunday before last This was when I took to the air for the first time for a few years. We departed Blackbushe and visited Cranfield, Turweston, Wellesbourne & Kemble before returning to Blackbushe. Colin may be interested to know that we flew over Milton Keynes between Cranfield & Turweston, and also Silverstone race track. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I flew out of and into Blackbushe many years ago. I remember there being a mothballed De Havilland Comet there. Mind you, it was 1984 so it will either have either rotted or have been restored by now!
Bob Dylan did his famous gig there in the 70s, supported by Eric Clapton, too. |

I remember both of those Colin. I believe the former Dan Air Comet, eventually (& sadly) succombed to the scrap man. I never attended the event but do remember that Bob Dylan played at Blackbushe. Here's an artical on it: http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/blackbushe.html _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

You're absolutely right. It was indeed a Dan Air Comet - and even then it was looking rather forlorn! |

Don't know which Comet it was at Blackbushe (OH will know) but I worked for DA at that time and they were still flying Comets at that time. I only joined them in '76 and I know they went through Newcastle and I put many passengers on them!

This looks like it. A Comet 4C apparently. Here's a picture - and a bit of info under the picture.

I didn't realise that Blackbushe had been Dan Air's operating base at one time. I never flew on a Comet but my dad did lots when he worked for Remington. |

I'm sure that one came through Newcastle. I flew on Comets as a passenger before I worked for that airline (there were a few others!) and was on the aircraft when they came through mainly for holiday flights. The inside was very narrow and was split into 2 cabins. I was on one of the Concordes (only on the ground) with a bunch of airport staff from different companies and several remarked how similar the inside of the cabin of Concorde was.
It was on the NCL-Gatwick scheduled service for a while, before I my time with them, and you'd be amazed at the number of businessmen who would ask at check in when the comet was going to be put back on that route!
The engineering base was at Lasham which I don't think was far away.

Yesterday I did a lovely 12 mile walk with my group. It was a circular walk from Tring Station and took in plenty of short steep climbs including going up Ivinghoe Beacon. There is a great view looking towards Whipsnade Zoo of the lion carved into the chalk hillside. Back to the station via the beautiful Ashridge Estate. |
