This is the commentary I first thought of when I heard of David's death this afternoon
"It's Hemery Great Britain, it's Hemery Great Britain, it's Hemery with one barrier to go," he continued. And then his pitch soared even more: "And David Hemery is going to take the gold. David Hemery wins for Britain! Hemery takes the gold, in second place Hennige and who cares who's third? It doesn't matter."
A great sporting broadcaster!

I echo those sentiments - I really didn't realise he was so old - it seems like only yesterday that he was a regular on our TV screens
A sad loss indeed _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Great Broadcaster, always enjyed watching him.
His name is where Private Eye got 'Colemanballs' from, now used generally describe any verbal balls up by sports commentators. |

The inspiration for "Colemanballs" in Private Eye due to his propensity for making embarrassing mistakes on-air! I have many memories of him standing by the teleprinter awaiting the football results on Saturday's Grandstand on "the BBC" in ye good olde Black & White days at Lime Grove.
I also remember "Sportsnight with Coleman" which went out on Wednesday nights (in the days when the BBC had sufficient coverage contracts to sustain it) and also as presenter of "A Question of Sport". |

The first I remember of him on a question of sport was with Bill Beaumont as captain, first with Willie Carson, then Emlyn Hughes and finally Ian Botham.
I enjoyed it then but I don't think it's anywhere near as good now. |

I agree Toggy - the current incarnation is a pale shadow compared to the great days of Coleman Beaumont and Cliff Morgan
I think the show should have been ended - or dare I say it 'axed' around ten years ago _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I haven't seen it for years (I'm not interested in mainstream sport at all so it's all a bit foreign to me) but I did enjoy it back in the 70s when Coleman was in the chair. He really was a very good broadcaster who was part of a BBC when everybody involved was breaking new ground in the new territory of TV production in the UK.
It's a bit too polished and predictable these days. |

The entire character of QOS has changed. Time was that sportsmen/women were asked questions about their sport - not just their particular event - ladies' javelin throwers of 2012 and the like.
Then you have the "observation" round - "what colour shoes was the runner in 3rd place wearing - sports knowledge not required.
QOS only becomes watchable when the panellists are from a previous era where knowledge of your sport was considered to be respectful to your peers. _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |
