|
|
Quote: | The late Tommy Vance will be back on the airwaves this Christmas after digital radio station Team Rock secured the rights from the BBC to rebroadcast the DJ's final Radio 1 show, which had been thought lost.
The deal has implications beyond Vance's Radio 1 farewell, one of the few BBC shows that the corporation has allowed to be rebroadcast by commercial stations.
It has been a long-held ambition by commercial broadcasters including another digital station, Fun Kids, for the BBC to unlock its archive, and the Vance deal will be the first of many, said Team Rock chairman John Myers.
The BBC has also been under pressure from the BBC Trust to do more with its extensive audio archive.
Myers said: "We are delighted to have come to an agreement with the BBC to transmit this programme. It was a complicated deal to achieve but I hope it will be the start of a longer working relationship with the corporation. We expect to announce further collaborations with the BBC in the near future."
Tommy Vance's final show was discovered by Myers who then approached the BBC for permission to rebroadcast it. The Radio 1 and Capital Radio DJ died in 2005. The show will air on Team Rock on 27 December at 10pm.
The BBC Radio head of business affairs John Moran said: "We are pleased to be working with Team Rock to begin to unlock the BBC radio archive for further broadcast through new partnerships with commercial radio. The digital rebroadcast of this programme shows how gems from the archive can still reach new audiences." |

It seems odd to read that his last Radio 1 show was "thought to be lost" because the BBC has been systematically capturing the output of all its broadcast operations since way before that date. The Beeb and other UK terrestrial broadcasters pay the BFI in Berkhamsted to digitally capture all television output (literally everything) and I'm sure somebody has a similar contract for radio. |
