Sad news indeed. Whatever your politics she was the first female Prime Minister and I can't think of anyone since who could have taken on the job.
RIP

When I heard this sad news I had to stop the car immediately - not because the announcement came as any great shock - but because I happened to be in Llandudno this lunchtime and guess where I was on the day Maggie became Prime Minister in 1979 - yes Llandudno - and I've only been there once in all the intervening period - really spooky
Getting back to the sad event it really feels like the end of an era for me as Maggie was really - perhaps with the exception of Tony Benn - the last real conviction politician
Whatever you thought of her she put forward policies to the electorate and actually carried out exactly what she promised unlike Blair and all others over the last 20 years who simply did whatever they thought would make them look good in the court of public opinion
I can quite honestly say that one of the happiest and most successful periods of my life was under Maggie's Premiership and I can almost trace to the day of her being ousted exactly when my life started to go downhill - and of course I'm probably not alone as most people's lives seem to have gone downhill in recent years just as this country certainly has
We need another Maggie to sort out the present mess in this country but I can't see where any such person is likely to appear from
She was a truly great leader and I will always be grateful for what she did for Britain - but sadly while some of her legacies remain to me much of her efforts have now been squandered by Europhile yes men _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I don't think it would have been right for her to have one anyway.
In my view she did a lot of damage to this country, I did not like the woman but as I don't think it right to speak ill of the dead I won't say any more than that.
Shame Galloway does not think the same, as an MP he ought to have more respect but I suppose it's not really surprising.
Still it has generated more publicity for him which I'm sure he's happy about. |

I think Maggie would have thought that much of it was a waste of money - that's why she quite specifically stated that she did not want a State funeral and certainly not a fly past _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

If it is true that she did not want any fuss then that makes it worse, wrong to go against her wishes.
I suppose there will be good photo opportunities for Cameron & co, more attention seeking from 'upset' celebrities.
Sorry to see that Clarkson & Wogan are all part of it, they've gone down in my estimation now. |

I suppose if she had been a serial adultress who had spent most of her adult life swanning around the world in luxury a state funeral would have been acceptable - it seemed to be in 1997. _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

I heard a gentleman (Prof Hazell?l) on the radio the other morning talking about the funeral arrangements and he said the reason she didn't want a state funeral was because it would have to go to a vote in parliament and she knew what a divisive figure she was and didn't want to be seen to have failed to have been voted one. |

It will be interesting to see who,if any, of the cabinet members (those who are still alive) who got rid of her attend the funeral.. |

If Clarkson and Wogan went down any further in my estimation they would be in Australia. I can just about get my head around Wogan, but Clarkson? _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

Yes, Clarkson is a strange choice. As for Terry, well our paths have crossed a couple of times and he really is the nicest of people.
Quite surprised to hear he is presumably a Tory voter, oh well. |

After the closure of the BBC's Mustardland board I joined a similar one and enjoyed it for a while. However, I have now de-registered from it simply because I was so appalled by the vile and vicious comments about Margaret Thatcher posted by some people including the board owner who started a "hate" thread title of which a troll would have been proud.
OK. if you didn't like her politics - and I didn't approve of some of what she did - it is perfectly permissable to be critical of them but some on there have gone too far, in my opinion, and have been the on-line equivalent of dancing on her grave. However, the language is not as foul as some tweets I have read.
I don't believe she would have approved of the huge funeral planned for her. |

Some of the tweets have been absolutely horrendous, as I said I didn't like her but would not have wished her harm.
It really makes me despair of humans sometimes and puts me off politics, any politics in a big way. There is too much tribalism, like football.
I think too much is being spent on her funeral, I know I'm not alone in this but there is nothing I can do about it so hey ho. |

Totally agree with you both. It's a disgrace and enough to make you feel ashamed to be from the same nation as some of those who have made such vile comments.

Sadly that's Britain in 2013 - not the country which I grew up in - ruined by far too many liberal dogooders foreign imposters and unintelligent badly educated people
I really hate life in Britain today - it feels like it's no longer my country and if it wasn't for the fact that I have two children who need me I often think I'd rather be dead - either that or move to France where they don't stand the same c--p we have to put up with in this country:evil: _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Sorry to hear that Ruddles - you are right about the sad attitudes shown towards society in general - it is very sad. The many years of contrived attacks on Lady Thatcher have carried on until they are perceived as gospel truth. As I understand it Harold Wilson closed more pits than Maggie did, but that is ignored by those who consider her death to be a cause for celebration.
And I'd rather have a Ruddles _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |
