A true genius who was so instrumental in promoting pop music in a new fresh way compared to what had gone before
I actually have an autographed photograph of him at his retreat in Glencoe which was given to me by a relative a few years ago
I think that people here of a certain age will have fond memories of his TOTP appearances and excellent radio shows
A truly decent man who did a great deal for charity and right to the end of his life helped many people less fortunate than himself _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

According to the Beeb website he raised over £40m for charity. Owsaboutthatthen, boys and girls. Ironically, he would have been 85 on Monday.

Oh God, not Jimmy as well.
This year has been truly awful for celebrity deaths.
I will miss you Jim, thanks for the memories |

The words 'icon' and 'genius' are much overused these days but JS was truly a legend in pop history. I remember as a ten year old watching the first TOTP in 1964, presented then by Jimmy, Pete Murray, David Jacobs and the late Alan Freeman. He did so much to promote pop at a time when British music really was taking over the world.
Jimmy RIP. |

It was quite a shocker to learn of this over the weekend. Like many folk, I have grown up with Sir Jimmy, on Top Of The Pops, Jim'll Fix It (he never fixed anything for my sister or I!) Those 'Clunk, Click' adverts and lots of other things on radio and TV besides. As I remember, those TOTPs that he compered often had some very interesting tracks on them. I remember seeing a website devoted to both TOTP & POTP, alas I don't remember the url, but do remember reading about the edition of Top Of The Pops that featured this early 'bubble gum' track on it, and it was a Jimmy Saville edition: Kastenetz Katz - 'Quick Joey Small': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b__xlvluKoI _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I loved the 'Old Record Club' (what was that signature tune...?) The idea of awarding imaginary points for knowing something about the song really engaged the listener.
It's a shame Jimmy wasn't used more in latter years - he was a great, distinctive broadcaster.... not trying to be funny, just being his very unique self.
As we slide ever further into banal 'celeb' broadcasting, this kind of character and talent will be missed, at least by many of us.
RIP |

I'm sure as many of you may know Jimmy was a member of MENSA for many years which proves the depth of his intellect and just why he was able to maintain his appeal with such a large number of viewers and listeners for so many years
I still have on DVD a copy of the documentary he did with Louis Theroux a few years ago in which he completely outwitted Louis for most of the time
I think many of the current crop of Radio 2 presenters with their apparent levels of intelligence would struggle even to fill in the MENSA application form
Although much loved in many respects I think Jimmy's talent was often underestimated because of his down to earth approach _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I thought it was entirely appropriate when I heard today that Jimmy's coffin was on display in a Leeds hotel for fans and wellwishers to view and pay their last respects
Only Sir Jim would ever have thought of such a thing being the great showman that he was and I'm sure he'll be watching over and having a good laugh in his usual tongue in cheek way thinking to himself 'ows about that then'
What an absolutely brilliant and appropriate end for a man of true genius _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I don't think that anyone needs to feel guilty about any comments made on here almost twelve months ago - one can only comment based on the information known at the relevant time and if some dark secret has at that time not reared its ugly head but does so later then one has to review one's opinions in the light of that
As I said twelve months ago Savile was a highly intelligent man and a member of MENSA and that remains true and probably goes a long way to explaining how he got away with these recently uncovered acts and managed to keep them hidden for the whole of his life
The fact is that unintelligent criminals often end up spending long stretches in prison whereas the highly intelligent ones like Mr Savile are able to use that intelligence in order to avoid detection and subsequent punishment - however regrettable that may be to the rest of us _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Despite his disgusting behaviour a little bit of me still feels some sympathy towards him because of all the good work he did, regardless of his motives.
And he did a lot to help introduce my generation to pop music. |

Just a passing thought - if he were not dead, you would not have heard about the allegations yet. He is unable to defend himself and whatever happened to innocent until proved guilty ?
I'm not the only one on these boards who can remember groupies queueing up to get laid by anyone even remotely connected with rock bands.
As a matter of interest, Jimmy Page was on Jools Hollands show on BBC tonight................
All these girls who turned up at TOTP claimed to be over 18.
I have no time for anyone who abuses children, but if an 18 year old pop star has a gang of supposedly 18 yr old girls dribbling over him - what is he supposed to do ? _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |
