Just wanted to say thanks for setting this board up....whilst the Radio 2 one is filled with many OTT views it nevertheless should not be closed just because some of the jocks get criticism.
My take on Radio 2 is that it is okay but unfortunately going in the wrong direction. I cannot comment on the weekday schedule as I don't often get to listen to it at work but I have no problem with Terry or Ken. Jeremy's show in my opinion is not necessary on Radio 2 (Five Live is more than adequate if you want Current Affairs) and Steve Wright would always make me re-tune as his show is well past it's sell by date. I've never listened to Sarah or Chris so cannot comment. The Evening schedules are fine and seem to be varied and fulfilling the BBC's remit of fairly diverse programming. I have no problems with Friday Nights and Sunday Nights having their niche programming although not my cup of tea as Saturdays is really Radio 1.5 now except for Sound of the Sixties and also not my cup of tea except Gambo. It makes me chuckle that all the 30 somethings get upset with 2 nights of older age group entertainment yet they have a whole day almost of their stuff without much moaning from the older generation !!
I tend to find Listen Again is my saviour particularly Gambo's show, some Mark Lamarr, Bob Harris etc and some of the Documentaries. There are also lots of Local Radio Shows that are good i.e DLT Three Counties, Richard Skinner BBC Berks, Mary Fox Northern Soul BBC Stoke, Tony Blackburn Soul BBC London.
I really am at the stage that I feel Radio 2 Gold would be the next step and have the DJ's for my age (42) - Andy Peebles, Tony Blackburn, Diddy David Hamilton, John Sachs and not the Ross's, O'Leary's, Brand's, and more celebrity orientated presenters. Lady BoilDeSpudsWell always echoed my view on the Radio 2 MB.
Radio 2 is still way better than Radio 1 and in general is good but I find the Big L, Easy Radio DAB, VIP Radio getting more listens each week.
Eat to the beat fellow boarders !! |

I think the BBC should consider relaunching 6 Music into BBC 6 "Light" or something similar for the older programming. I'm sure this would encourage older folk to invest in a DAB radio or digital TV equipment.
Transfer the 6 Music shows onto Radio 2...then problem solved. |

Radio 2 Gold would stay on 88-91 FM ...but Radio 2 could move to Digital.
I think more elderly listeners would not listen Online so keeping it on FM may solve the problem. |

They could listen via a DAB radio or digital set-top box! |

I've tried that but the missus wants X-factor.
We have 3 DAB radios in our house, that is unusual for folks over 50 yrs old, I expect.
Does worry me, though, that DAB 2.0 in a few years will make the current DAB sets obsolete, apparently

What worries me, also, is the way in which compression is being increased at the expense of technical quality. Soon, the Beeb's online Realplayer streams will be better quality than the over-air stuff! (And that's saying something!).

Quite right Ella.
I would give much credit to the Radio 3 forum who made very technical investigations into the quality of Radio 3 DAB transmissions which were 128 or 160 kbps for a while, no good for chamber music and 'real' instruments. The internet media sites reported and supported the group, and in the end succeeded in getting the bitrate back up to 192 (though it occassionaly dips down again when 5Live have live broadcasts).
R3 does sound better than ClassicFM now

It's outrageous that stations like R3 should even have been contemplating 128kbps for high-quality music. It's bordering on acceptable for speech, but that's all. I listen to the BBCWS Digital Planet via Podcast and that's compressed to about 10MB for a 30 minute programme, which is impressive, but it's all speech.
Still, I guess it's much like the current so-called "HDTV" con which everybody is falling for - people don't seem to care too much about quality as long as the product has a label (eg: "HD Ready" <doh> ).
Put the output of an iPod at 128kbps into a decent audio system and it sounds rubbish... Do people care?
Colin
PS: Yes, I know there's no <doh> smiley in the default set, perhaps I'll go off now and look for one! |

I think the Government should issue free digital equipment to the over 60's. |

Then those who complain that we're being taxed to the hilt will have even more to complain about!

Why? I think the over 60's deserve something in this life. It's bad enough the Tories would take away the £200 fuel allowance. Talk about killing off an ageing population! Maybe that's what Cameron wants, the clueless knob-end? |

Freeview generally sounds better than DAB, the bitrate is usually higher.
Can't get all the DAB stations of course, but all the BBC channels are there. So if you're contemplating getting a DAB tuner for your HiFi to listen to Auntie Beeb, and you've got a handy TV aerial nearby, get a Freeview tuner instead. Of course you'll have to connect it to a telly to set it up. _________________

Sometimes the audio quality isn't all that great on Sky Digital! Occaisonally, ITV1 London is in mono! Good job the other ITV1 regional channels are available to tune into! |
