I'm in agreement with Rachel about this. SK was very unprofessional.
She knew previously that she didn't like the song, so why didn't she say to her producer before playing it, "I'm not playing it because I despise it and I don't feel it suits the DP mood" instead of petulantly pulling it part-way through and ranting about it on air? Bad form, Sarah!
By her action she has made her producer look foolish on live national radio, and also, no doubt, aggreived said producer into the bargain.
And, FYI, I didn't like the song either... I just feel SK dealt with the whole situation very childishly and has probably caused some bad blood in the control room over this. _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

In case you're interested Ernie, the beginning of the article....
""Am I too old for Radio 2 at 52?
It is a question I keep asking myself as I scan through their schedules and find them dominated by the insane ramblings of Russell Brand, the musical intensity of Mark Lamarr and the me, me, me attitude of Jonathon Ross.
I also have no idea who the artists are playing on the live sessions!
Is there really an indie rock band called The Shins?
and is Alabama proud to boast about a rockabilly musician called Dan Sartain?
This isn't Radio 2 as we know it!
This is Radio 1 1/2 - catering for the over 25's who have grown out of Chris Moyles.
I do understand radio stations have to evolve, and cater for the next generation but did they need to do it so dramatically that many over 50's give up on the station when Jeremy Vine closes his microphone at lunchtime?
It appears I am in the in-between years - too old to appreciate the charms of Dermot O'Leary and yet not old enough for the Sunday saccharine spooned out by Aled Jones, Dale Winton and Alan Titchmarsh.
The station is so worried about attracting younger listeners and not losing older ones, it is completely forgetting about the ones in the middle.
40 years ago, when radio 2 was first launched on the airwaves, it was a sea of tranquillity with John Dunn hosting the Breakfast Special and Two Way Family Favourites on a Sunday with Jean Metcalfe and Cliff Mitchelmore carrying on a long distance liason while the Yorkshires were rising in the oven...
Today is all Posses, verbal ping pong with the traffic reporter and music from artists I had never heard of yesterday and probably will never hear again! "" |

How about
SK: Oh no, you put that on our playlist, just to wind me up!
Prod: Yeah, I dare you to turn it off half way though
SK: I will you know.

How can the producer reply? SK never lets anyone else speak on air.
She seems to be getting partial to having a dig at people that can't reply on air..... Thieves, anybody?
If SK and her producer were having a chuckle, SK didn't seem to find it particularly amusing.
Her attitude struck me as churlish, thats all. _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

Cherskiy wrote: | Rachel wrote: | I can understand presenters wanting to influence the choice of music played on their show. Nothing wrong with that! It would make for a better show though, to put the time in up-front, before the show starts, and have some clue about what music is being played on the show before getting half way through a track being played on air, and then deciding that it just won't do, cos really that, just won't do. |
SK strikes me as having extremely little input as to the playlist - maybe the Showtune and that's about it. In fact, you can usually tell her surprise at various tracks she's asked to play, it almost seems that she has little or no warning of what's coming up next.
This may be a reason why I'm not too keen on SK's show - I don't hate it passionately but I'm not about to add to the list of shows I listen again to. She doesn't add much to what's being played. TW may not have much control either, but he hides it better. It may also explain why I am an advocate of Bob Harris, who has 100% control (or what seems like it, anyway) over his material. |
Cherskiy. That post holds a lot of truth. I remember when Sarah was a guest on Jonathan Ross' show one Saturday, not long after he started on R2. It was a good interview, and the question of choice of featured music did come up. Sarah revealed that she was told what to play, whereas Jonathan got a lot more freedom over what he played. I do wonder if the type of music a presenter likes does influence what's chosen by the producers as, since Sarah revealed that she likes country music, they do slip one or two country influenced tracks in every so often. |

(John, if you're reading this, it's not meant as an attack on SK - I'm merely questioning her motives and options.)
Lord Evan, it makes you wonder what if any kind of influence she has been offered in the past, what is on the table when her contract is renewed and whether or not she's made any recent attempts to change what seems to be the policy of having her playlist dictated to her. Presumably your mention of a few country tracks being 'slipped in' every once in a while is meant as a sop.
Pulling a track midway through somehow strikes me as being rather petulant since she's obviously been told she had to play it. If she doesn't like the current arrangement, I would have thought her options were either a) quit and find a station that would accommodate her playlist (assuming she wants to do the work in setting them up, of course), b) try to persuade R2 to allow her more freedom in her playlist or c) accept the status quo and not throw the teddy out of the pram when something she doesn't like is apparently forced upon her. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Welcome back Santa, hope you have been holidaying and not hospitaling.
I missed the incident mentioned and don't know the "song" in question, so cannot comment. However, I do usually listen to Bunty from around 6:15 till 6:45 and then from about 7:10 till Tel and then listen to Tel. I do find that Bunty is either very very good, or awful, absolutely terrible; but give me Bunty in preference to Mr squeaky-clean who stood in for her, she at least is a character and not bland. IMHO, of course

Slight error in that, at risk of upsetting Victor Meldrew Yes there is really a band called 'The Shins', and why shouldn't Alabama be proud to boast about Dan Sartain? Both of whom were guests on Mark Radcliffe's show this week (Wrong Mark!) , he's one of the few Lesley Douglas signings I can listen to. In case anyone's wondering, tonight's session is fron 'Super Nashwan'. I, for one, do like to hear lesser known artists and I don't think that they should be kept for speciality shows where they will only be performing to an audience already devoted to that kind of music.

I have to say I find it a little incongrous that they bang on about 'Music Clubs' and diversity etc and yet we still get Brown Eyed Girl on the hour every hour during the day plus highly rotated playlist material.
If I were LD and wanted to put my money where my mouth was re: musical diversity, without having to compromise the ratings chasing playlist payola then I'd do the following and alternate the shows...
5.00am Dawn Patrol Show (Presenter choice of music. Non-playlist)
7.00am Breakfast Show (Playlist)
10.00 Mid Morning (Presenter choice of music. Non-playlist)
12.00 Current Affairs Show (Playlist)
2.00 Afternoon Show (Preferably Danny Baker. Presenter choice of music. Non-playlist)
4.00 Drivetime (Playlist)
This possibly can't be done till Wogan and Kennedy go, but it puts playlist shows during the peak times and at lunchtime when the music is secondary and allows the Early Show, mid morning and afternoon slots to have presenters who revel in playing what they like.
I think it would create a much more musically edifying daytime schedule and is about the only way la Douglas, like them or loathe them, is going to succeed in getting her favourite big names like Ross, Baker and Brand to go near a weekday show. None of whom will touch a playlist.
Failing that the future of weekdays will be full playlist and nothing but bland, characterless tv lightweights like Jono Coleman and Kate Thornton who don't mind Brown Eyed Girl and Beyonce every five mins for their five hundred grand a year. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew...

I did say like them or loathe them, but the station is increasingly at odds between this 'Oh we're such a diverse muso station' and, during the week, what is to all intents and purposes Heart FM!
The bigger, more creative, more engaging radio talents - and let's not forget to include Radcliffe among the Baker's, Ross's and Brands - will not play Beyonce and Brown Eyed Girl so unless something gives, as I say, the future of daytime R2 will simply be the exclusive domain of the likes of Kate Thornton and Matthew Wright. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

She seemed to enjoy it, in a not very subtle way... I thought........
My favorite show tune would be an adapatation of a real one, as follows:-
I'm Rachel, Rachel, married lady,
Bow when I go by.
I'm a corporation now,
Not me, myself and I.
Oh how that marriage license works
On chambermaids and hotel clerks.
The honeymoon was such delight
That we got married that same night.
I'm Rachel, Rachel, married lady,
Still in bed at noon,
Racking my brain deciding
Between orange juice and prune.
Hubby says nothing is too good for me,
And who am I not to agree?
I'm Rachel, Rachel, married lady, that's me! |

We do seem to have made a big mountain out of a small molehill here. It turned into just another opportunity to have a go at Sarah Kennedy. Her failings and shortcomings have been raked over enough in the past - she ain't gonna change/improve but she does appear to have a substantial, loyal body of listeners who love her notwithstanding, so if we want a change we'll just have to be patient.
Would we have reacted the same way, I wonder, if it had been Terry who had shut it off?
Incidentally, although Sarah mentioned that she heard him play it "yesterday" it doesn't appear on his music played lists. Nor does it appear on any of the other daytime presenters lists, all of which are, quite unusually, up to date at the moment. Does this imply they don't like it either and probably vetoed its inclusion before it had the chance to be played?
As I said before, the song pushes the limit of what we normally assume to be daytime Radio 2 material, and its place on the playlist is questionable (I notice it's still there on next week's - will be interesting to see who plays it!) _________________ Ron |

Again I agree with you LBDSW, Mark Radcliffe is ,IMHO, a rare talent that should be on a daily peak time show. I was flabbergasted when Clive James played Brown Eyed Girl while sitting in for Parky. Van the Man is such a talent with a huge repertoire, so why play this the only track that SW is aware of?
